Opening Slide Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on “Design a CD label” using Inkscape.
Learning Objectives (Slide) In this tutorial


We will learn to

  • Create a CD template
  • Design a CD label
  • Save the file as PNG



System requirement (Slide) To record this tutorial, I am using


  • Ubuntu Linux 12.04 OS
  • Inkscape version 0.48.4


Open Inkscape Let us open Inkscape.



Go to File >> Document properties Go to Document properties.
Change width & height to 425 Change the Width and height parameters to 425.


Close the dialog box.

Draw a square >> width and height to 425 Create a square using the Rectangle tool. Color it red.


On the Tool controls menu, change the width and height parameters to 425.

Draw a circle >> width and height to 425 Draw a circle using the Ellipse tool.


Again change the width and height parameters of the circle to 425.

Select circle and square >> Align and Distribute. Select both the circle and the square.


Go to Object menu. Click on Align and Distribute.



Align in centre Check if the Relative to option is in Page.


Align them in the centre.

Path menu >> Difference Go to Path menu. Select Difference.
Draw another circle >>


width and height to 85 >>


align in centre

Now draw another circle.


Change the height and width parameters to 85.


Align in the centre of the page using Align and Distribute.

Select both shapes >> Color it white Select both the shapes. Since this is the template we will change the color to white.



Layers menu >> Layers >> layer name to CD template Go to Layers menu. Click on Layers.


Change the current layer name to CD template.



Lock CD template layer Lock the layer to avoid the movement of the elements in the layer by mistake.

Create another layer >> CD design Create another layer. Name it as CD design.



Point to the canvas Now our CD template is ready.


We can use this for creating various CDs in the future.

File >> Save as Let us save the SVG file.


Go to File. Click on Save As.

Filename >> CD template >> Save Let me save it in the Desktop.


Type the Filename as CD template. Click on Save.

Point to the layers Now we will work on CD design.



Draw a square >>


Color it light blue

Let us design a background. So, draw a square using the Rectangle tool.


Color it light blue.



Change width and height to 425 Change the width and height parameters to 425.
Design a graphic illustration Let us design a graphic illustration.
Import Spoken Tutorial logo Next, let us import the Spoken tutorial logo.


The logo has been given to you in the Code files link.

Go to File >> Import Go to File. Click on Import.


Resize the logo and place it on the top left of the illustration.

Type Spoken Tutorial logo >> Font size to 40 Type Spoken Tutorial to the right of the logo.


Change the font size to 40. Align in centre.

Type “Partner with us...help bridge the digital divide” Type “Partner with us...help bridge the digital divide” on the next line. Change the font size to 25.



Point to the bottom area I will write the contact details on the bottom area of the CD label.



Copy and paste the contact details Let me copy the contact details from the LibreOffice Writer file that I had saved already.


Now paste in the bottom area.

Align them Align them using the Text and font and Align and Distribute options.

Point to the right side area of the CD label >>


Show image

Let us add some images on the right of the CD label.


I have already made an image collage and saved it in my Documents folder.



Show images The image is given in your code files link. Pls locate it.



File >> Import >> Image1 Go to File. Click on Import. Select Image1.


Now the image is imported.

Place it on the right side Place it on the right side of the CD label.

File >> Save As


ST CD label >> Save

Let us save the SVG file. Go to File. Click on Save As.


Type the filename as ST CD label. Click on Save.



Point to the CD label Now our CD label is ready. Let us export the file as PNG.



File >> Export Bitmap Go to File. Click on Export Bitmap. A new dialog box appears.



Page tab >> Export area Click on Page tab under the Export area.



Type ST CD label >> Save >> Export Let me save the file in the Desktop.


Type the filename as ST CD label. Click on Save. Now click on Export.



Desktop >> Open ST CD label Let us now go to the Desktop and check our file.


Our CD label looks like this.
