Installing SUMO
Welcome to this spoken tutorial. We will learn how to install SUMO in this tutorial. Firstly let me tell you something about SUMO.
The full form of SUMO is Simulation of Urban MObility. It is an open source, highly portable, microscopic road traffic simulation package designed to handle large road networks. The major reason for the development of an open source, microscopic road traffic simulation package was to support the traffic research community with a tool, into which their own algorithms could be implemented and evaluated, without the need to regard all the artifacts needed to obtain a complete traffic simulation, such as implementing and/or setting up methods for dealing with road networks, demand, and traffic controls.
Let us now learn how to install SUMO Before installing the software, you will have to firstly decide, whether you primarily want to only use the software or also extend it.
If you only want to use the software, you can simply download and run the pre-built packages or binaries from the link http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/sumo/index.php?title=Downloads. Here I shall type http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/sumo/index.php?title=Downloads on my internet browser window.
Here you will find the latest release of the software for Windows as well as Linux operating systems which will be a zipped file. For this tutorial I am using Windows operating system. So click on sumo-winbin<version>.zip. You will be prompted to save the file. Save the file on your desktop. As the downloaded file is a zipped file you will need an unzipping software. Use any available unzipping software. Here I have winrar to extract the files. I am extracting it to the C drive. So,that is all you need to do,the software is installed.
If you require to extend the software then you will have to download the source files instead of the binaries from the same link .Repeat the same steps, that is type http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/sumo/index.php?title=Downloads on your browser window and click on source files this time. Here I click on the source files. Further you will have to build the source files.
In the coming tutorials, you will learn how to build source files. This is Ashish Cherian signing off for now.
