Prerequisites |
To follow this tutorial, you need to have Joomla 2.5.22 installed on your system. |
Switch to the browser | Lets open our Joomla administrative panel first.
So go to the browser and type http://localhost/joomla/administrator |
Type login id as admin and password as admin123. | Enter your login id and password and press on Login button.
I will enter my login id as admin and password as admin123.

We are now on the Joomla control panel. | |
Show Slide 5: Article Manager | We will now learn about the Article Manager.
Article Manager is a view in Joomla administrative panel. We can view articles and manage them through the Article Manager. |
Show Slide 6: Reaching the Article Manager | We can reach the Article Manager from the Control Panel by doing 2 actions:
a. Click on the Article Manager in the first row in the Control Panel or b. Click on the Content in the top menu and then click on Article Manager. |
Switch to the browser | Let's go to the administrative page again. |
Point to the column headers one by one | Let's understand the Article Manager a little more.
In the Article Manager, you can see the that the column headers are all clickable. It means you can sort the articles using any of these columns.

Show the filters as per the narration | Article Manager has filters to make your search faster if there are many articles.
The search in the Article Manager works on the title or the alias of the article. There are other filters based on the category, access, status of the article, author and language of the articles. |
Point or click & display as per narration. | Status shows the published status of the article.
*published - meaning it could be displayed on the front-end *unpublished – meaning it cannot be displayed *archived – meaning it is removed from the article manager by default and put in historical records or *trashed – meaning it has been deleted from the system. |
Missing visual cue | Featured: Featured articles are the ones which are displayed on the homepage of your website. |
Missing visual cue | Category: Shows the category to which the article belongs. |
Missing visual cue | Ordering: Is the order in which to display the articles.

Missing visual cue | You can change the order by clicking on the header and then either-

Missing visual cue | You can save the new order by clicking on the Save order icon. |
Missing visual cue | Access: Shows the user group that has access to the article. |
Missing visual cue | Created by, Date, Hits and Language are obvious. |
Missing visual cue | ID: ID is the unique identification number for this item in Joomla.
It is automatically assigned by the system and cannot be changed. |
Move cursor to top right toolbar | On the top right is the toolbar for taking action on the articles.
We see one new action named Check-In. When we open an article, the article is locked for other admins so they cannot open it for editing.

Point or display the various options as per narration | We can close the article by selecting Save, Save & Close, Save and New, Save as Copy or Close. |
Missing visual cue | If we forget to close the article by either going back in the browser navigation or by closing the browser window, it will remain locked.

Missing visual cue | The admin who opened the article will need to select check-in, in order to give access to other admins to open it. |
Missing visual cue | There is also an Options icon here. These are the global options for all articles. |
Missing visual cue | In case it is ON, we can turn it OFF by editing php.ini in the apache installation. |
Missing visual cue | We will now come to creation of articles. |
Show Slide 7: | There are three ways to reach the article creation page in Joomla:
a. Click on the Add New Article icon in the Control Panel. b. Click on the New icon in the options at the top in Article Manager. c. Click on Content in the top menu, then Article Manager and then the submenu Add New Article |
Switch to the browser | Lets go to the administrative panel and create a new article. |
In Control Panel >> click on Add New Article | I will click on Add New Article in the Control Panel.

Missing visual cue | Article creation page has some fields that have to be filled up and some icons on the top right.
Title, Category and Article Text are mandatory fields. This means you cannot create an article without entering values in these fields. Default value of Category field is Uncategorized. |
Missing visual cue | Let's create an article.
I have already created a category called Minerals and here I chose the category as Minerals. |
Missing visual cue | Let's put some sample text in the Article Text.

Missing visual cue | The article can now be saved without entering any more fields.
On the top right, we can see the icon to save. The Save icon will only save the article, and load the page with Edit Article mentioned here. Save & Close will save the article and take you back to the Article Manager. Save & New will save the article and load another Add New Article page. Cancel icon would cancel article creation and go back to the Article Manager. |
Missing visual cue | If you want to edit an existing article, find that article in the Article Manager and click on the title of the article. |
Missing visual cue | Clicking on the title of the article will open a page similar to the add new article page, but with Save as Copy icon on the top right.
You can make the required changes to edit the article and save it. |
Missing visual cue | If you click on Save as Copy, a new article, which is a copy of this article would be created.
This copied article will have a different title and alias than the original one. |
Missing visual cue | We will now see how to delete an article in Joomla. |
Missing visual cue | Go to the Article Manager and look for the article that you want to delete. |
Missing visual cue | Click on the check box on the left of the article title. |
Missing visual cue | On the top right of the Article Manager, you can see the option to unpublish the article or trash it. |
Missing visual cue | If you are sure you will not need the article later, you can click on trash icon.
This will remove the article from the system. |
Missing visual cue | Otherwise, unpublish the article. |
