00:01 Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on How to apply for a PAN card.
00:06 In this tutorial we will learn the process of-
00:09 Applying for a PAN Card

00:15 Tracking the status of the application
00:18 The Pan card application form is called Form 49A.
00:24 This form can be downloaded from the link given below
00:28 Once you have downloaded the form, take a print-out of the same.
00:35 Next step is to fill the form.
00:38 The form is to be filled legibly in BLOCK LETTERS in English only.
00:45 It is preferable to use a pen with black ink to fill the form.
00:49 In each box, fill only one character i.e (alphabet /number / punctuation sign).
00.58 A blank box must be left after each word.
01:03 'Individual' applicants need two recent colour photographs with a white background.


01:09 These photos have to pasted on the form in the spaces provided.
01:14 The size of the photo should be 3.5cm x 2.5cm
01:21 The photos should not be stapled or clipped to the form.
01:26 The photo on the left, should have a signature/thumb impression across it.
01:32 For the right side photo, the signature/thumb impression should be below it.
01:39 Thumb impressions should be attested by a Notary Public or an authorized officer with official seal and stamp.
01.48 Now, start filling the form.
01.51 First of all, fill the Assessing officer details.

02:08 In the item 1 section, you have to fill in your personal details.
02:13 Here, select your title, like Shri, Smt etc.
02:19 Write your surname, first name and middle name, in full-form.
02:25 These are to be filled without any initials.
02:29 Your name should not be prefixed with any title like M/s, Dr., Kumari, etc


02:37 For Non-Individuals, what if the name is longer than the space provided?


02.42 In that case, it can be continued in the space provided for First and Middle Name.
02.50 In case of a Company, the name shouldn't contain any abbreviations.


02.55 E.g. 'Private Limited' should be written in full.
03.00 Variations like Pvt Ltd, Private Ltd, P, P. Ltd etc are not allowed.
03:10 In case of sole proprietorship, the PAN should be applied for in the proprietor's own name.


03:16 This will be printed on the PAN card.
03:19 Note that the last name must be written in its full-form.
03:24 The next section asks for other names that one is or was known by.
03.30 It must be filled if the applicant selects "yes", following the instructions applicable for item 1.
03.38 Item 4, the Gender field, should be filled only by Individual applicants.


03:44 The item 5 section asks for date of birth.
03:48 The dates expected from different categories of applicants are specified in the form.


03:54 E.g. A Company should provide its Date-of-Incorporation.
04:00 Next, Individual applicants should fill in their father's name.


04:05 Instructions in item 1 with respect to name, apply here.
04:10 Note that married women should also give their father's and not their husband's name.
04:17 Item 7 asks for your address.
04:20 Residential address should be filled only by Individuals, HUF, AOP, BOI or AJP.
04.29 Individuals should give Office Address here, if they have a source of income e.g business or profession.
04.38 In case of a Firm, LLP, Company, Local Authority or a Trust, complete office address is mandatory.
04.49 The address given by all the applicants should include these details -
04.54 Town/City/District,
04.57 State/Union Territory, and
05:00 PINCODE


05:02 Foreign addresses must contain Country Name along with its ZIP Code.
05:07 For item 8, i.e. Address for Communication-
05:11 Individuals/HUFs/AOP/BOI/AJP may tick on either 'Residence' or 'Office' address.
05.21 Other applicants should write their 'Office' address


05.25 All communication will be sent to the address written here.
05.30 Telephone Number and Email ID details are to be filled in item 9.
05.37 Telephone details should include Country code i.e ISD code and Area/STD code
05.46 E.g. Details of a Delhi telephone 23557505 number should be filled as
05.54 9 1 the Country code
05.56 * 1 1 the STD Code


06:00 The numbers and e-mail id are necessary to
06:04 contact applicants in case of any discrepancy in the application
06:09 send the PAN card via e-mail
06:12 SMS the status updates
06:16 In item 10, select the category status that is applicable.
06.21 In case of Limited Liability Partnership, the PAN will be given a Firm status.
06.28 Item 11 asks for the registration of companies, issued by the Registrar of Companies.
06.35 Other applicants may mention registration number issued by State or Central Government Authority.
06.42 Item 12 -
06.43 Citizens of India, must enter their AADHAAR number, if allotted.
06.48 It should be supported by a copy of the AADHAAR card.
06.53 In item 13, applicants must indicate their source of income using a business/profession code
07:01 These codes are available on page 3 of the form.
07:05 E.g. Medical Profession and Business's code is 01
07:10 Engineering is 02


07.13 Item 14 asks for personal details of representative assessees.


07.19 Only those specified in Section 160 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 can act as representative assessees.
07.29 Some of them are-
07,31 an agent of the non-resident,
07.33 guardian or manager of a minor, lunatic or idiot, Court of Wards etc.
07.41 Representative assessees are mandatory for applicants who are minors, mentally retarded, deceased, idiot or a lunatic.
07.54 Personal details of the Representative Assessee have to be filled here.
08:00 Item 15, is about documents to be submitted for Pan Card application.
08:06 Attaching proof of identity and proof of address with a PAN application is mandatory.
08.13 These documents should be in the name of applicant.
08.18 Representative assessees must also attach these documents
08.24 List of documents that serve as proof of identity and address are given on page 4 of the Pan application form.


08.33 Applicants must furnish any one document from the options listed in the form.
08.39 E.g.-Proof of identity for Individual applicants and HUF are-
08.45 School leaving certificate
08.47 Ration Card
08.49 Driver's license etc.
08.53 Documents for proof of address are -
08.56 Electricity bill
08.57 Telephone Bill
08.59 Passport etc.


09.01 Now we will discuss some general information regarding the application-
09.06 The fee for processing PAN application is Rs.96.00 i.e Rs 85.00 + 12.36% service tax.
09.18 Payment can be made by-
  • Demand Draft
  • Cheque


09.23 For addresses outside India, the processing fee is Rs. 962.00
09.28 i.e[ (Application fee 85.00 + Dispatch Charges 771.00) + 12.36% service tax].
09.40 For foreign addresses, payment can be made only by way of Demand Draft payable at Mumbai.
09.48 The box at the end of the form, asks for the applicant's signature or thumb-print.
09.54 Representative Assessee's signature or thumb print should be given for minors, the deceased, lunatics and the mentally retarded.
10.04 Applications without signature or thumb-print will be rejected.
10.09 Applicants will receive an acknowledgement on acceptance of this form.


10.14 This will contain the Unique Identification number.


10.18 This number can be used for tracking the status of the application.
10.23 You can track its status using the Income-tax Department website or these websites
10.32 On this website, the "Status Track " search will perform this task.


10.38 This search will need either your
10.40 acknowledgement number, or
10.42 details like name and date of birth


10.46 One can also get PAN status details via SMS.


10.50 SMS- NSDLPAN <space>15-digit Acknowledgement No. and send to 57575
