To follow this tutorial, ensure you have:

  • Moodle 4.5 installed and
  • Admin access to your Moodle site
Here are the prerequisites to learn this video.
Login as admin We will log in as the Admin user.
Click on Home Let us start with understanding what a block is.

Point as per narration A block is a small UI element for quick access to a certain activity.

Like Course completion status, Latest announcements, Upcoming events.

Point to blocks on the right sidebar – Latest announcements, upcoming events, etc. Blocks appear on the right side or centre of your Moodle dashboard or Course page.

They help improve navigation and display useful content.

Come back to Moodle Home Page (Logged in as Admin)

Click on Dashboard

This is the Site Administrator’s personal dashboard.
Turn editing ON (Top right gear icon >> Turn editing on To add blocks, at the top right click the Edit Mode slider button.

The editing is now turned on.

Scroll to the top of the page >> Point to “Add a block” At the top of the page, click on Add a block.

On doing so, the block will be added in the centre of the page, by default.

Open Moodle’s block drawer (grey arrow) at the top right corner >> click on “Add a block.” You can also open Moodle’s block drawer at the right corner.

And click on Add a block.

On doing so, the block will be added on the right of the page, by default.

Click Add a block >> click the Logged in user option A list of available blocks is displayed.

Let’s add the Logged in user block by selecting it from the dropdown list.

New block appears on the side The block now appears on the right.
Click Add a block >> click the Online users option Repeat the steps once again and select Online users.
Logged in user block >> click on the Actions menu For the Logged in user block, click on the Actions menu, which is the 3 dots icon.
Click on Configure Logged in user block >> Click on Expand all Click on Configure Logged in user block.

Click on Expand all.

Various options are available to customize this block.

Choose No for Display city and Display email

Then click Save changes

We’ll choose No for Display city and Display email.

Then click Save changes.

Click on the Actions menu >> Hide To hide the block, click on the Actions menu and choose Hide.

Notice that the colour of the block is now greyed out.

Point to Delete To completely remove a block, choose Delete.

In the confirmation box, click on Delete.

Show Front page settings: Site administration >> Appearance >> Front page To manage blocks on the Front page, go to Site administration >> Appearance >> Default Dashboard page.
Point as per narration The Default Dashboard Page is a configuration setting at the site level.

It determines what the first view of the Dashboard will be for all users.

This is what they will see when they first access their Dashboard. Here, you can choose which blocks appear where.

Edit Mode ON Ensure that Edit Mode is ON.
Click the centre Add a block button First add Calendar block and Online users block.
Click the Actions menu of the Calendar block >> Select Default region >> select Right >> Save changes

Point to Calendar block

Click the Actions menu of the Calendar block and select Configure Calendar block.

Select Default region and Region fields as Right and click Save Changes.

Notice that the Calendar block is now seen on the right.

Use arrow handle of the Online Users block >> move to the top Use the arrow handle of the Online Users block and move it to the top.
So, that’s a quick overview of blocks in Moodle!
