Pre-requisites |
To practise this tutorial, the learner should be familiar with Marble interface
|
I have opened the Marble interface. | |
Click on theOpenStreetMap view
Zoom in >> Point on our home location Mumbai. |
Go to Map View and select OpenStreetMap. |
Right click on Overviewmap.
From the context menu selectHide option. Right click on Compass. From the context menu select Hide option. Right click on Scale bar. From the context menu select Hide option. |
I will hide Overview map, Compass and Scale bar for better view of the map. |
Go to drop-down button and select Flat view option. | I will select Flat view option from the drop-down. |
Let us hide latitudes and longitudes for better visibility of the map. | |
Go to the Legend panel and un-check Coordinate Grid checkbox. | Go to the Legend panel and un-check Coordinate Grid checkbox. |
Let us make the Edit Maps panel visible if it is not seen on the interface. | |
Click on the Settings menu and select Panels.
From the sub-menu chooseEdit Maps option. Point to Edit Maps panel. |
Click on the Settings menu and select Panels.
From the sub-menu, select Edit Maps option. |
Point on Edit Maps panel and click on it.
Point on the icons. |
In the Edit Maps panel we see some icons. |
Let us first learn to add a place mark on the map. | |
Cursor on the interface.

Let us go to our home location Mumbai.
We will add a place mark on the location of IIT Bombay. Zoom in and locate IIT Bombay. |
Click on Add Placemark option.
Point onEdit Placemarkdialog box |
Go to Edit Maps panel and click on Add Placemark icon.
Edit Placemark dialog box opens on the interface. |
In the Name field type the name as IIT Bombay. | In the Name field type the name as IIT Bombay. |
Under Label click on the Color button. Point on Select colour window.

Under Label click on the Color button.
Select Color window opens.
|
Click on the OK button in the window. | Click on the OK button in the window. |
Click on the Description tab. | Next click on the Description tab. |
In the Description field, type the information given in the code files link. | In the Description field, I will add some information about IIT Bombay.

Check Show Balloon popup checkbox. | Check Show Balloon popup checkbox. |
Click on the OK button at the bottom of the dialogue box. | Click on the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box. |
Point on the location of IIT Bombay in the map. | Now we can see a place mark at the location of IIT Bombay. |
Click on its label. | Click on its label. |
Point on Place information data sheet.
Point on the Short description.

Place information data sheet opens.
In the Short description, information added in the Description field is shown. Let us close this sheet. |

Add a place mark and description for Delhi on the map. Hint: The description about Delhi is provided in the Code files link. |
Point on Add polygon icon.

Let us now add a polygon to highlight a particular area on the map.
We will add a polygon to highlight Kerala on the map. |
Zoom in and locate Kerala on the map.
Click on the Add Polygon icon. |
Zoom in and locate Kerala on the map.
Click on the Add Polygon icon. |
Point on Add polygon dialog box.
Type the name as Kerala in the Name field. |
Add polygon dialog box appears on the interface.
In the Name field type the name as Kerala |
Let us select colours for Lines and Area of the polygon. | |
Click on the color button.
Point to Select color window. From the colour box ,select red colour for Lines Click the OK button. |
Click on the Color button.
Click the on the OK button. |
Point on the Width dropdown button.

We see a Width drop-down button.
We can select the line width here. I will choose the line width as 1.5. |
Click on the color button under Area.
Select color window opens. From the color box, select magenta for Area. Click on the OK button.

Click on the Color button under Area.
Select Color window opens. From the colour box, I will select magenta for Area. Click on the OK button. |
Resize and place the dailog box to the left side of the interface.
Click onNodes option. |
Let us resize and place the dialog box to the left side of the interface.
Now click on Nodes tab. |

Node |
Node is a point on the map.
It specifies the longitude and latitude of a particular place. |
Give nodes on the border of Kerala.

Let us now start marking Nodes to draw a polygon on the area of Kerala. |
Click on the boundary of Kerala. keeps clicking all along the boundary. | To mark the area with nodes, click anywhere on the boundary of Kerala.
Keep clicking all along the boundary to complete the full area of Kerala. |
Click on the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box.
Point on Kerala on the map. |
Click on the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box.
After marking all the nodes, Kerala appears in magenta colour. |

Highlight Karnataka state using the Add polygon option. |
Point to the Add path icon.
|
Next icon is Add path.
If we wish to add some lines or path on the map we can use Add path tool.
|
Locate Pune and Solapur on the map. | Locate Pune and Solapur on the map. |
Click on Add path icon.
|
Click on Add Path icon.
Add path dialog box opens on the interface. In the Name field I will type the name as Path-1. |
Click on the color button under Lines.
From the color box, select blue color. Click on the Ok button. |
Next we will select colour and width for our path.
From the colour box,I will select blue colour.
|
Click on the Width drop-down button and choose 1.5. | Click on the Width drop-down button.
I will choose the colour width as 1.5. |
Resize and place the dialog box to the left side of the interface.
Click on the Nodes tab in the dialog box
|
Let us resize and drag the dialog box to the left side of the interface.
Click on the Nodes tab in the dialog box.
|
Click on theOK button at the bottom of the dialog box.
|
Click on the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box.
|
Click on Save Annotation FIle icon. | Let us save all the annotations we have made on this map.
|
Point to Save Annotation File dialog box .
|
Save Annotation FIle dialog box opens on the interface.
I will select Desktop folder. |
In the File name field type the name as Annotation-1.kml.
Cursor on Files of Type dropdown.
|
In the File name field type the name as Annotation-1.kml.
Please note that file format should be.kml or osm. . Click on the Save button in the dialog box. |
Close this Marble application.
Go to the Desktop folder. Point to Annotation-1.kml on the Desktop. |
Let us check our annotation file.
Go to the Desktop folder.

Right-click on the file.
Select the optionOpen with Marble. Point to all the annotations. |
To open the file, right-click on the file.
Notice that all annotations made on the map have been saved in this file. |
