Opening Slide | Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on “Animate a toy train” using Synfig. |
Learning Objectives (Slide) | In this tutorial we will learn to animate the toy train which we created earlier. |
System requirements

For this tutorial, I am using
|
Synfig interface | Let’s open our Train Synfig file. |
Point to the canvas | Please open your Train Synfig file which you saved on your system. |
Point to the canvas | Let us start with the animation. |
click on the drop down list of Wheel group layer | Click on the drop down list of Engine group layer.
|
Again right click >> New layer >> Transform >> Rotate | Again right-click and click on New layer.
|
Point to Rotate effect | Now the Rotate effect has been applied to the wheel.
|
Click on the Turn on animate editing mode icon | In the Animation panel, click on Turn on animate editing mode icon. |
Type 100 in Current frame box | Type 24 in the Current frame box.
|
Parameters panel | Go to the Parameters panel.

Amount parameter >> Change value to 360 | Double-click on the value of Amount parameter and change the value to 360.
|
Drag the Time cursor between 2 waypoints | Click and drag the Time cursor between the 2 waypoints and check the rotation of the wheel.
|
Press Ctrl + S | Save the file by pressing Ctrl + S. |
Point to the rotation effect | Let us now create a time loop for this rotation effect. |
Right click on Rotate effect layer | Right-click on Rotate effect layer and click on New layer. |
Right click >> New layer >> Other >> Time Loop | Then click on Other and on Time Loop. |
Parameters panel >> Check on Only For Positive Duration

In the Parameters panel, tick the checkbox of Only For Positive Duration.
|
Point to Rotate & TIme Loop effects | Next, let us add the Rotate & TIme Loop effects to all the wheels. |
Select the 2 layers >> Press Ctrl + C | So, select both the effect layers using the Shift key.
|
click on the drop down list of Wheel-1 group layer >> Press Ctrl + V | Now, click on the drop down list of Wheel-1 group layer.
|
Repeat the process for other wheels | Repeat the same process for all the wheels.
|
Press Ctrl + S | Save the file once again by pressing Ctrl + S. |
Point to the train | Let us now animate the train. |
Select all the group layers except Rail >> Rename as Train | Select all the group layers except Rail.
|
Point to the Time cursor | Make sure that the Time cursor is in the zeroth frame. |
Drag the train to the right of the canvas | Using Shift key, drag the train outside the canvas towards the right. |
100th frame >> Move the train to left of the canvas. | Move the Time cursor to the 100th frame.

Click on Turn off animate editing mode icon
|
Click on Turn off animate editing mode icon.
|
Go to File >> Click on Render | Let us now render the animation.
|
Change the extension to avi >> Target drop down list >> ffmpeg | In the File name field, change the extension to avi and change the Target to ffmpeg. |
Quality >> 9 | Increase the quality to 9 and click on the Render button. |
Desktop >> play the animation | Now go to Desktop.
|
Point to the animation | We can now see the Toy train animation. |
