Opening Slide Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on “Create patterns in Inkscape” using Inkscape.
Learning Objectives (Slide) In this tutorial

We will learn to create patterns using

  • Cloning
  • Pattern along path
  • Spray tool
  • Path effect editor
System requirement (Slide) To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux 12.04 OS
  • Inkscape version 0.48.4
Open Inkscape Let us open Inkscape.
Click on Star tool >> Draw a star Click on the Star tool and draw a star in the draw area.
Click on Selector tool Now click on the Selector tool.
Change width and height to 40 On the Tools controls bar, change the width and height parameters to 40.
Zoom in >> Click on the star once Zoom in and click on the star once.
Observe that the pivot point is visible now.

Its the plus shape in the centre of the star object.

Move the pivot point Click and move pivot point far away from the star, as demonstrated here.
Go to Edit >> Clone >> Create Tiled clones Now, go to Edit menu, click on Clone and then on Create Tiled clones.
Point to the dialog box A new dialog box opens up.

You can find many tabs and many options under each tab.

Click on symmetry tab >> drop-down menu >> option simple translation Under Symmetry tab, we can see a drop-down menu with various methods.

For this demo, we will keep the option simple translation.

Change rows and columns to 1 and 40 Change the rows and columns parameters to 1 and 40 respectively.
Shift tab >> Change X parameter to -100 Next go to Shift tab.

Change the percentage of Shift X parameter under Per column to -100, as shown here.

Go to Rotation tab >> Change angle to 10 Next, let us go to Rotation tab.

Change the Angle under Per column to 10.

Click on Create >> close the dialog box Now click on Create button.


Point to the patterns

Observe, a circle pattern is formed with the star.


Likewise, you can use the other options under Create Tiled clones to make many beautiful patterns.

Let us move this star circle aside.

Point to the patterns Next, we will learn how to create a pattern along a path.
Draw a rounded rectangle Select Rectangle tool and draw a rounded rectangle.

Color it green.

Then click on the Selector tool.

Change the width to 540 and height 250 On the Tool controls bar change the Width to 540 and Height to 250.
Draw a star >> Click on the Selector tool


Width and Height to 100 x 100

Next draw a star using the Star tool.

Click on the Selector tool.

On the Tool controls bar change the Width and Height to 50.

Place in on the top left of the rectangle Place it on the top left border of the rectangle.
Select both shapes >> Extension menu >> Generate from path >> Pattern along Path Select both the shapes. Go to Extensions menu.

Click on Generate from path and then on Pattern along Path.


The Pattern along Path dialog box opens.

Change the Copies of the patterns option to Repeated and the Deformation type option to Ribbon. Change the
  • Copies of the patterns option to Repeated
  • and the Deformation type option to Ribbon.
Click on Apply Click on Apply button.

And then click on Close.


Observe, a beautiful pattern is formed around border of the rectangle.

Point to the canvas Let us now create another pattern using Path effects.
Select Bezier tool >> Draw a wavy path Select Bezier tool and draw a deep wavy path.
Go to Path menu >> Click on Path effects. Go to Path menu. Click on Path Effects Editor.

A dialog box opens up.

Click on Apply new effect Click on Apply new effect drop down menu.

Notice, there are various effects listed here.

Select Spiro spline Let me select Gears and then click on Add.

Observe the change in the shape.

Select Sketch >> Add Next, select Sketch and click on Add button.
Point to Tool options In the Path Effect Editor, you can find various parameters related to the current effect.
Change Strokes = 10. Let us change one of them, say, Strokes, to 10.


Observe the change on the object.

Close the Path Effect Editor dialog box. Now close the Path Effect Editor dialog box.
Select the shape and keep it aside Select all the shapes and move it to one side.

Point to Spray tool Next, we will learn to create a tree pattern using Spray tool.
Select Bezier tool >> draw trunk >> draw leaf Select Bezier tool.

Draw a tree-trunk, as demonstrated and color it brown.

Now draw a leaf and color it green.

Select Spray tool >> Create pattern Select Spray tool and click on the leaf shape.
without releasing the mouse drag around the trunk Now without releasing the mouse drag around the trunk to create a tree.
Point to the tree Observe a tree shape is formed.
Summarize That's all for this tutorial. Let us summarize.

In this tutorial, we have learnt to create patterns using

  • Cloning
  • Pattern along path
  • Path effect editor
  • and Spray tool.
