0:00 Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on Ubuntu Software Center.
0:04 In this tutorial, we will learn how to use the Ubuntu Software Center,
0:09 to download, install, update and uninstall software on the Ubuntu Operating System.
0:16 What is Ubuntu Software Center?
0:18 It is a tool that allows you to manage software on the Ubuntu OS.
0:23 You can use it to search, download, install, update or uninstall a software.
0:30 Ubuntu Software Center also lists reviews and ratings for each software;
0:36 this way you have information about the software even before you use it.
0:41 It also keeps a record of the software history.
0:45 In this spoken-tutorial, we are using Ubuntu Software Center on Ubuntu version 11.10.
0:52 To proceed with the tutorial,
0:54 You must be connected to the Internet.
0:56 You need to be a System Administrator or have Administrator rights to install software.
1:04 From your Launcher, click the Ubuntu Software Center icon.
1:08 The Ubuntu Software Center window appears.
1:12 The All Software, Installed and History buttons are displayed at the top left of the window.
1:19 The Search field is displayed at the top-right corner.
1:23 The Ubuntu Software Center window is divided into two Panels.
1:28 The left panel displays the list of software categories.
1:33 The right panel displays What’s New and Top Rated.
1:38 The What’s New panel lists the software that has been newly released.
1:42 The Top Rated panel displays the list of software that have a high user rating and are downloaded most frequently.
1:51 Let’s browse for software by category.
1:55 From the left panel, click on Internet.
1:58 A list of Internet software and top rated software for the category Internet are displayed.
2:05 Notice, that some of the software has a circle with a tick mark.
2:10 This indicates that the software has already been installed in your computer.
2:15 To view more software in the Internet category, click the All icon.
2:21 All software, that is available for the category Internet, is listed on the window.
2:26 You can also sort the software By Name, By Top Rated or By Newest First.
2:32 Let’s click the drop-down on the top-right corner.
2:36 From the list, select By Top Rated.
2:40 The Internet software is arranged in the order of ratings.
2:45 To view the complete list of software that is installed in your computer,
2:50 click the Installed button.
2:53 The software category is displayed.
2:56 Click on small triangular button in front of Sound and Video.
3:02 The list of software, installed on your computer, for Sound and Video, is displayed.
3:08 Let’s click on All Software and from the drop-down, select Provided by Ubuntu.
3:14 All the softwares, Provided by Ubuntu are listed.
3:19 Now, let’s install the software VLC media player.
3:24 In the Search box in the top-right of the window, type VLC.
3:29 VLC media player is displayed.
3:33 Now, click Install.
3:35 The Authentication dialog box appears.
3:38 Enter your system password.
3:42 Click Authenticate.
3:44 Look at the progress bar that indicates that VLC is being installed.
3:50 Installation may take a while depending on the number and size of the packages being installed.
3:57 The progress is also indicated by the button on the top.
4:02 You can access other applications while installation is being done.
4:07 Once VLC is installed, there is a small tick mark against VLC.
4:13 The Remove button is displayed on the right side.
4:17 If you want to uninstall VLC, simply click the Remove button.
4:23 Similarly, you can search for and install all other software packages.
4:29 Now, let’s view the History.
4:31 This allows us to view all the changes we have made including installations,
4:37 updates and removal of software.
4:40 Click History. The History dialog box appears.
4:45 You can check your history by All Changes, Installations, Updates, and Removals.
4:51 Click All Changes.
4:53 The list of all the changes made, that is, installations, updates and removals are displayed.
5:01 You can also update the installed software on a regular basis.
