Show the ELAN interface. | I have already opened the ELAN interface. |
Go to File, New. | Go to File, New to start a new project. |
Go to the Videos folder. | I have saved the input files provided with this tutorial in the Videos folder. |
Point to the mp4 and Wav files in the left frame. | The video file is in mp4 format.
The WAV file is the audio of the video in waveform format. |
Cursor on the left frame. | This can be read and displayed by ELAN for ease of annotation.
Wav is a high resolution audio format of ~ 44,000 Hz and 16 bits per sample. |
Select both the files and click on the right click operator. | Select both the files.
Click on the right shift operator to add them to the project. |
Click on Ok. | Click on OK to initialize the new project. |
Cursor to show the audio waveform and on the video preview. | Notice the audio is seen in waveform below the video panel.
This is will make annotation easier to match with time. |
Click on the waveform and show the red cursor.
Use Ctrl+mouse scroll wheel to show zoom in and out. |
Click anywhere on the waveform to move the crosshair.
Use the Control key with the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out. |
Click twice on the up and down triangle on the left of the waveform panel. | Use the triangle icons on the left, to collapse or maximize the audio panel. |
Place Cursor on lower timescale bar. Click, hold and drag up and down to show resize. | You may also click, hold and drag on the lower time scale bar to resize it. |
Cursor on the region below audio waveform panel. | The empty region, seen below the audio is used for adding transcription. |
Now let’s add transcription in English to the video. | |
Click on Type and choose Add New Tier Type. | From the top menu, click on Type and choose Add New Tier Type. |
In the Add tab, for Type Name, type English. | A window opens with many choices.
In the Add tab, for Type Name, I will Enter English. |
Click on Add and then on Close. | I will retain the rest of the defaults.
Click on Add to add the Tier Type. Then on click on Close to close the window. |
Cursor on the Tier on the menu. | Next, we will create a Tier.
Various Tiers can be added to the Tier Type that we created. |

Tiers can be used to organize,

Cursor on the default on the left lower panel. | If the tier information is not seen on the lower panel, do the following. |
Place cursor on the left lower panel and right click to open the context menu. | Place cursor on the left lower panel and right click to open the context menu. |
Select Tier Set and uncheck the box for Work with tier sets, if it is selected. | Select Tier Set and uncheck the box for Work with tier sets, if it is selected. |
We will add a single tier to add annotation in English for the narration. | |
Show File manager and cursor on the input video nodes.mp4 file. | Please pause the video and play the provided input video.
The audio in English is only by a single narrator. The audio does not contain expressions or emotions. The video contains actions. |
Click on Tier and select Add New Tier. | Click on Tier and select Add New Tier to open the Add Tier window. |
In the Add tab, for Tier Name, I will type Narration. | In the Add tab, for Tier Name, I will type Narration. |
In the Participant field, type RP. | For Participant field, I will give my initials as RP, you may use yours. |
In the Annotator field I will type Rani. | In the Annotator field I will type my name as Rani.
You can type in your name. |
Click on the Tier Type pulldown and select English. | Click on the Tier Type pulldown and select English.
We had earlier created this Tier Type to add the transcription. |
For Input Method, I will choose English (India). | For Input Method, I will choose English. |
click on More Options. | Next, click on More Options, to set the Tier colors scheme. |
Cursor on the Change Tier Attribute Window. | Here we can change tier color, and highlight color and font style.
This is useful when the video has multiple characters or languages. |
Click on Browse next to Tier Color to open the Select a Color dialog box. | Click on Browse next to Tier Color to open the Select a Color dialog box. |
From the Swatches tab, select a cyan color and click on Ok. | From the Swatches tab, I will select a cyan color and click on Ok. |
Cursor on the cyan color next to Tier Color. | Notice the color change is reflected in the square next to Tier Color. |
Click on Browse next to Tier Highlight. | To select color for Tier Highlight, click on the Browse button against it. |
From the Swatches tab, select a red color and click on Ok. | Again, go to the Swatches tab, and I will select a red shade and click on Ok. |
Click on Browse next to Tier Font. | Repeat this for Tier Font, and open the Select Font window. |
Scroll down and Bitstream Charter. Click on Apply. | Scroll down and I will select Bitstream Charter and click on Apply. |
click on Apply. | The changed settings is seen clearly.
Click on Apply to accept the changes. |
Cursor on Type, Participant or Dependency. | A smaller Change Tier Attribute dialog box opens.
Here, we can group tiers colors by Type, Participant or Dependency. |
Click on Apply. | I will leave it as is now and click on Apply.
Later on learner is encouraged to practice to group Tiers. |
Click on Add.
Cursor on the new added tier. |
Click on Add in the Add Tier window.
The new tier is seen on the top panel and below the waveform. |
Click on Close. | Click on Close to close the window. |
Place the cursor on Default tier on the left panel. | ELAN opens with a tier named default.
To delete a tier, place the cursor on it. Place the cursor on Default tier on the left panel. |
Right click to open the context menu select Delete Default. | Right click to open the context menu.
Select Delete Default to remove the tier. I will leave it as is now. |
Cursor on the pink tier. | The tier highlighted in pink is the activate tier. |
Place the cursor on Narration tier and right click. | To activate the Narration tier, place the cursor on it and right click. |
From the context menu, check the box for Activate Narration. | From the context menu, check the box for Activate Narration.
The tier color turns pink. |
Cursor on English tier and then on the timeline panel. | Next, let’s select the region to annotate. |
Move bottom scroll bar to the left. | Use the bottom scroll bar and go left, to view the very beginning of the video. |
Cursor on the waveform display. | Notice the waveform of the first sentence in the audio. |
Place the cursor in the Tier region. | To select this region, first place the cursor in the Tier region. |
Click, hold and drag to select a region in the waveform display. | Then, click, hold and drag to select a region in the waveform display.
It gets highlighted in lavender color. |
Click on the >S under Selection.
Selected audio is played. |
To play the selected region click on the Play selection icon as seen here.
The selected region gets played. |
Cursor on the icons in the playbar, showing the tooltip. | The function of each icon is seen as a tooltip.
Learner is encouraged to learn and practice them for ease of using the software. |
Click on the Move Crosshair (right arrow with crosshair) twice to move the playhead. | The icon on the right side moves the playhead to either end of the selection. |
Click on Annotation, New Annotation from Here on the top menu. | Now let’s add the annotation.
Click on Annotation, New Annotation from Here on the top menu. |
Cursor on the editable region on EnglishNarration tier. | An editable form appears on the selected region on the Active Narration tier. |
In the form, type, Let’s connect the two summary nodes with a linking line. | Play the selected region, listen to the audio and type the text into the form.
While typing annotations, user may want to hear the sentence many times. The selected region can be played continuously in a loop. |
Check the box for Loop Mode on the right. | For this, check the box for Loop Mode on the right and play the video. |
Cursor on the Selection play icon. | To stop playing, press the Spacebar or click on the play icon again. |
Stop the play and uncheck the Loop Mode. | I will stop the play and uncheck the Loop Mode. |
You may also double click on the selected region, to edit the annotation. | |
Click on Clear Selection to clear the selection. | Click on the icon next to the play section, to clear selection. |
Click on File, Save ELAN File. | Click on File, Save to save the project.
A Save dialog box opens. |
Choose Videos folder and type file name, annotate.eaf. | I will choose the Videos folder and name the file, annotate.eaf. |
Click on Save. | Click on Save to save the project. |
Click on File, Exit. | Click on File, Exit to close ELAN. |
