Image: 90 ml breastmilk stored in a container |
Mother should store only enough milk -
|
Image: 1 inch space at the top of the container
Image: Frozen breastmilk is expanding and fills that 1 inch gap |
If the mother plans to freeze her breastmilk -
Because breast milk expands as it freezes. |
Image: Container is labelled with date and time | She should label each container with the date and time of milk expression |
Image: Breastmilk filled labelled container is stored in a fridge | Then, she should store these breastmilk filled containers in the coldest possible place |
Image: Breastmilk filled containers are stored in a fridge
Image: Fridge |
If she has a fridge, it is best to save the milk there |
Image: Breastmilk filled containers are stored in the back of the lowest shelf of the fridge.

|
Image: thermometer for temperature
Image: Clock for time Image: Expressed breastmilk |
The lower the temperature of storage, the longer the storage time |
Image: Breastmilk is stored up to 7 days in the fridge.
Image: 7 days Image: Temperature of the fridge is between 2 and 8 degree Celsius. |
Breast milk can be stored for up to 7 days in a fridge under clean conditions |
Image: Milk in the fridge is kept cold consistently | It must be kept cold consistently |
Image: Father is opening the door of the fridge frequently
GIF: Temperature is rising. |

Image: Temperature of the fridge goes above 8 degree celsius
Image: Breastmilk is stored in the fridge Image: Power cut Image: Mother is using breastmilk within 6 hours |
If the fridge temperature rises during storage time due to a power cut or other reasons -
|
Image: Mother is throwing away the stored breastmilk | If the breastmilk is not used within 6 hours, then she should throw it away |
Image: Breastmilk filled labelled container is stored in a cold, dark place in the house. | If the mother doesn’t have a fridge then -
|
Image: Breastmilk filled container is kept near a water-filled earthen pot
Image: Breastmilk filled container is kept in a vessel filled with cold water |

Image: Cool bag Image: Cool box Image: deep frozen ice packs Image: 24 hours |
Another way to store breastmilk outside the fridge is -
|
Image: Milk coming in direct contact with ice packs
Image: Milk is protected from ice packs Image: Frozen breastmilk |
The milk must be protected from the ice packs or it may freeze |
Image: Breastmilk is carried in a cool bag by mother. | The cool bag can also be used to carry milk |
GIF: 7 days
Image: Mother immediately freezes breastmilk after expressing it. |
If the breast milk is to be stored for longer than 7 days-
|
Image: Milk is frozen solid in the freezer of a fridge
Image: Single door fridge Image: Solid milk Image: 2 weeks |
Milk which is frozen solid in the freezer of a fridge will be good for 2 weeks |
Image: Breastmilk is frozen solid in a separate freezer
Image: Double door fridge Image: 3 to 6 months |
Milk stored in a separate freezer will be good for 3 to 6 months |
Image: Frozen solid milk is defrosted in the fridge
Image: Milk solid to liquid Image: 24 hours |
When this previously frozen breast milk is defrosted -
|
Image: Frozen solid milk is defrosted outside the fridge
Image: Mother immediately uses the outside defrosted milk |
And when it is defrosted outside the fridge, it should be used within 2 hours
