00:06 In this tutorial, we will learn to:
00:09 draw basic shapes, color the shapes, group & duplicate objects and
00:14 align shapes using Guideline.
00:17 To record this tutorial, I am using:
00:20 Ubuntu Linux 14.04 OS,
00:24 Synfig version 1.0.2
00:27 Let us open Synfig.
00:29 First, we will draw the compartment of the toy train.
00:33 For this, select the Rectangle tool.
00:36 In the Tool options, check if Create a region layer is selected.
00:42 Now, draw a rectangle on the canvas.
00:46 Change the layer name to Part-1.
00:50 Go to the Parameters panel and change the color to green.
00:56 Click on the Transform tool now.
00:58 Then click outside the canvas to deselect the shape.
01:02 Remember to do this step after drawing any shape on the canvas.
01:07 Let us save our file.
01:09 Go to File. Click on Save as.
01:13 Change the filename to Toy-Train-animation.
01:18 Save it in your Desktop.
01:21 Now, select the Rectangle tool once again.
01:26 Draw a rectangle in the centre of the previous rectangle as shown.
01:32 This will be the window of the train.
01:35 Let’s rename this layer as Window.
01:41 Next, click on the Polygon tool.
01:43 In Tool options, check if Create a region layer option is selected.
01:50 Draw a trapezium above the rectangle as shown.
01:54 Click on the starting point to close the trapezium.
01:59 Rename this layer as Part-2.
02:03 I will change the color to red.
02:07 Now, select the Transform tool.
02:10 Go to Layers panel.
02:12 Select all the layers and group them.
02:15 Rename the group layer as Compartment-3.
02:20 Resize the layer using the orange dot of the handle.
02:24 Move it to the right of the canvas using the green dot of the handle.
02:30 Save the file by pressing Ctrl and S keys.
02:35 Next, let us draw the wheel of the train.
02:38 Remember to click outside the canvas to deselect the shape after drawing any shape.
02:44 Select the Circle tool.
02:46 In Tool options, Create a region layer should be selected.
02:50 Draw a circle as shown and change the color to dark blue.
02:56 Now select the Star tool.
02:59 In Tool options, Create a star layer should be selected.
03:05 Keep the cursor in the centre of the circle and draw a star.
03:09 Now, select the Transform tool.
03:12 Observe there is 1 handle and 2 dots.
03:16 Click and drag the green dot of the handle to change the position of the shape.
03:22 Use the blue dot in the handle for rotation.
03:26 The middle green dot allows adjustment of the outer edge of the star shape.
03:31 The last dot is used for resizing.
03:34 Select both the star and the circle layers.
03:37 Group them and then rename as Wheel-1.
03:41 Resize this group layer and place it below the compartment.
03:47 Now duplicate the Wheel-1 group layer.
03:50 Rename as Wheel-2 and move to the other end of the compartment.
03:56 Now select all the group layers.
03:59 Group them again and rename as Compartment-3.
04:04 Now click on the Duplicate icon twice.
04:08 Rename the duplicated group layers as Compartment-2 & Compartment-1 respectively.

05:37 Click on any one of the compartment’s drop down list.
05:40 Select and copy both Wheel-1 and Wheel-2 group layers.
05:45 Paste in the Engine group layer.
05:49 Using Shift key drag these wheels to the bottom of the engine.
05:54 Now, drag a guideline from the top ruler and place it at the bottom of the compartments.
06:03 This guideline will help us to align the compartments & engine in a straight line.
06:10 Next, move & align the Engine next to Compartment-1.
06:16 Then draw a rectangle to link all the compartments.
06:20 Rename the layer as Belt and change the color to black.
06:27 Move the Belt layer to the bottom of the Layers list.
