Slide: Prerequisites

To follow this tutorial, ensure you have:

  • Moodle 4.5 installed and
  • Admin access to your Moodle site
  • For prerequisite tutorials, please visit "https://EduPyramids.org"
Here are the prerequisites to learn this video.
Login as admin We are logged in as the Admin user.
Screen: Site Administration >> Courses >> Manage courses and categories Let us begin with creating a course.

Most institutions organize courses by campus or department.

Click on Create new course Course name: type Calculus. On the right side, click on Create new course.

In the Course name field, type Calculus.

Short name: Math-101 You can add the Course short name.
Change the Course category to 1st year Maths. Change the Course category to 1st year Maths.
Course Start date >> 15 June 2025

Uncheck "Course end date" box

Then define the Course start date.

Uncheck the box to disable Course end date.

Screen: Course summary >> type: "Topics covered in this Calculus course are: Limits, Graph of a function, Factorial." In the Course Summary box, type a description for the course.
Screen: Save and return Scroll down and click Save and return.
Screen: Course list page The newly created Calculus course appears in the list.
Screen: Edit options for Calculus course To edit, click the pencil icon next to the course name Calculus.

You can update course settings here.

Click Home >> Scroll to the course >> Highlight Course summary. Please note: The course summary is also shown along with the course list on the Home page.
Back to My courses >> Manage courses >> Hide a course To hide a course, click the eye icon Hide.

This makes the course invisible to students.

Screen: Unhide the course >> click Show To unhide, click the eye icon Show.
Screen: Copy course >> click Copy course >> select settings >> add content >> click Copy and return To make a copy of the course, click Copy course.

This opens a pop-up box to copy the course.

Add content, select the settings, and click on Copy and return.

Point to Duplicate course demo. Please note: The copied course may take a few minutes to appear on the Moodle interface.
Screen: Reorder courses >> Move Duplicate course above Calculus Use the move icon to change the order of the courses within the list.
Screen: Duplicate course >> point to Delete icon and click To delete a course, click the Delete icon.

⚠️ Deleting a course will remove all its materials, question banks, quizzes, users, and submissions.

So, that’s the quick demo of adding and managing a course in Moodle.

  • Create a course
  • Edit, hide, unhide, duplicate, reorder, and delete a course
  • Add summaries and organize courses properly
Here is the summary of this tutorial.

"Assignment 1":

  • Create a new course: "Linear Algebra" under the "1st year Maths" subcategory.
  • Add this Summary: "Linear equations, Matrices, and Vectors".
  • Hide this course.

"Assignment 2":

  • Add two new courses under "2nd Year Maths" subcategory: "Multivariable Calculus" and "Advanced Algebra".
  • Set the start date of both to "15th June".
