Slide: Prerequisites

To follow this tutorial, ensure you have:

  • Moodle 4.5 installed and
  • Admin access to your Moodle site
Here are the prerequisites to learn this video.
Slide: Course categories Let us begin with course categories in Moodle.

Course categories are used to group similar courses together.

They help in organizing content effectively.

Login as admin We are logged in as the Admin user.
Go to Site Administration, >> Courses >> click on Manage courses and categories. Click on Site Administration, Courses and Manage courses and categories.
Screen: Default Categories Moodle has a default category called “Category 1”.

All uncategorized courses usually go here.

Click Actions menu >> select Edit >> Rename as "Miscellaneous" >> click Save Changes Click the Actions menu and select Edit.

Rename as Miscellaneous and Save Changes.

Click Site Administration >> Courses >> click on Manage courses and categories To create a new category, go to Site Administration, then Courses.

Now click on Manage courses and categories.

Screen: Click on ‘Create new category’ >> parent category >> select Top in the drop-down

Type name as Mathematics >> click Create Category

Let’s now learn to create a new category.

Click Create new category.

In the parent category dropdown, select Top.

Type Mathematics as the name and click Create Category.

Click Create new category >> Choose Mathematics as parent category >> name it "1st Year Maths" >> click Create Category.

Repeat the same steps for "2nd Year Maths".

Next, we’ll add two subcategories under Mathematics.

Click Create new category again. Choose Mathematics as the parent category, and name it 1st Year Maths.

Repeat the same steps for 2nd Year Maths.

Screen: Edit >> Mathematics category >> add description >> Save Changes Next, click Edit next to Mathematics.

Add this description: "All mathematics courses will be listed under this category."

Click Save changes.

Just point, do not delete. To delete a category, one has to click Delete.

Warning: Deleting a category removes all its subcategories and courses along with all materials and user data.

Screen: Change Parent Category Let’s change the parent of 2nd Year Maths from Mathematics to Miscellaneous.

To do so, click on Edit, change the parent to Miscellaneous and save.

Again edit and revert the parent category back to Mathematics.

So that’s how we create and manage categories and sub-categories in Moodle!
