Purpose of PAN card

The most important purpose of allotting PAN card is
  • For the purpose of identification and
  • To track all the monetary information of that entity.



Facts about PAN card

* PAN is unique, national and permanent
  • It is unaffected by the change of address
  • It is illegal to own more than one PAN

  • Aids in filing of Income Tax Returns
  • Used as a documentary proof for opening DEMAT Account for share trading


Why do we need a PAN card? It is used as a documentary proof for bank withdrawals exceeding

Rs.50, 000


Why do we need a PAN card? * It is a tool that helps the IT Dept to keep a check over tax defaulters.
  • This is done by indirectly tracking their credit history.


Why do we need a PAN card? * Used as a documentary proof for availing TDS (Tax Deductions at Source)

  • First five characters are letters, next 4 numerals, last character letter.
  • The first three letters are sequence of alphabets from AAA to ZZZ.

* The fourth character informs about the type of holder of the Card. Each assess is uniquely
  • P — Person
  • C — Company
  • H — HUF(Hindu Undivided Family)
  • F — Firm
  • A — Association of Persons (AOP)
  • T — AOP (Trust)
  • B — Body of Individuals (BOI)
  • L — Local Authority
  • J — Artificial Juridical Person
  • G — Government


Structure and Validation

Display your PAN Card and zoom into the 5th character


Circle the surname

Draw an arrow to the 5th character and circle it

The fifth character of the PAN is

(a) the first character of the surname / last name of the person, in the case of a "Personal" PAN card

  • Recall that the fourth character of a "Personal" PAN card is "P"

In the image shown, the surname is _________. Therefore, the 5th character is ___________.

(b) of the name of the Entity/ Trust/ Society/ Organization in the case of Company/ HUF/ Firm/ AOP/ BOI/ Local Authority/ Artificial Juridical Person/ Govt, where the fourth character is "C","H","F","A","T","B","L","J","G".

* The last character is an alphabetic check digit.


Point to the date of issue in the PAN card image. * The DOI (Date of Issue) of PAN card is mentioned at the right (vertical) hand side of the PAN card.
