What are Plugins?
|
|
Open the gedit Text editor | Let's open the gedit Text editor. |
Click Edit >> Preferences | Some plugins are installed by default, in gedit Text editor.
To view the default plugins, from the Main menu, click Edit and Preferences. |
Click on Plugins tab | In the Preferences dialog box that appears, click on Plugins tab. |
Scroll up and down to show the default plug-ins. | The list of default plugins that are installed, is listed here. |
Point to the check box which are checked by default | Notice that some of the plugins are checked, by default.
This indicates that they are enabled and we can use them. |
Point to the Plugins list in the list box. | If you don't see as many plugins on your editor as shown here, you can easily install them.
You can do so by using Ubuntu Software Center. |
Click on Close button | Click on the Close button of gedit Preferences box. |
Click on the Dash Home | Now, click on the Dash Home icon at the top left corner of the computer desktop. |
In the Search box, type Ubuntu software center. | In the Search box, type Ubuntu Software Center. |
Click >> Ubuntu software center | The Ubuntu Software Center icon appears. Click on it. |
In the search box, type gedit.
Click on the Text Editor icon and on More Info button |
In the Search box, type gedit.
Click on the Text Editor icon. Then click on More Info. |
Scroll down to see the Add-ons | Scroll down to see the Add-ons available for gedit Text editor.
We can see additional plugins options. These can be used depending upon our requirement. |
Select the check boxes

Select the check boxes for-
if these are not already selected. |
Click >> Apply Changes button | Click on Apply Changes button.
Enter the Admin password when prompted. Click on Authenticate.
Now, the most commonly used plugins will be added to our list. |
Close Ubuntu Software Center. | Close the Ubuntu Software Center. |

Next we will enable few plugins. | |
Click >>Edit >> Preferences. | From the Main menu, click Edit and then Preferences. |
Click on Plugins tab >> Check the Sort >> Change Case and Spell Checker check boxes. | In the Plugins tab,

Click Close | Click on Close. |
Click Edit.
Point to the Sort, Change Case in the edit menu.
|
Once again, click Edit in the Menu bar.
We can see the plugins are added to our menu list. |
Open document Fruits.txt. | Let me open a document Fruits.txt which I have already created.
The Fruits.txt file is available in the Codefile link along with this tutorial. Download and use that text document.

Let us see -

Click Edit >> Preferences | From the Menu bar, click Edit and Preferences. |
Click Font & Colors | Then click on the tab Font & Colors. |
Uncheck the box “Use the system fixed width font” | Uncheck the box “Use the system fixed width font”, if it is already checked. |
Click on the Editor font button. | Lastly, click on the Editor font button. |
Point to different font name | Here, we can see different font names.
Select the font name that you want to use. |
Point to + / - button | At the bottom right, there is a minus or plus sign button.
This is used to increase or decrease the font size. |
Click + to increase the font size upto 20 | I'll increase the font size to 20. |
Click Select . | Click Select button to set the font size. |
Click on Cobalt | To change the background color, click on Cobalt in the Color Scheme option. |
Immediately, you can see the background color has changed to blue. | |
Click on Classic | Click on Classic to go back to the normal settings. |
Click Close . | Then click on Close. |

Next, let us see how the sort option works. | |
Edit >> Sort | From the Main menu, click Edit and Sort. |
Point to the Sort dialog box. | The Sort dialog box appears. |
Point to the word 'Oranges' in the document. | In our document, we have 'Oranges' typed twice. |
Check Remove Duplicates box. | Check the Remove duplicates box.
It will remove the duplicate words from the document, if any.

Check the Ignore case. | Check the Ignore case checkbox also. |
Click Sort. | Now click on Sort. |
Point to the sorted order of the text. | Notice that the words in the list are now arranged in alphabetical order. |
Point to the removal of the duplicate copy of the word 'Oranges' | Also notice that the duplicate copy of the word Oranges is removed. |

Next, let us see how to use the Change Case option. | |
Point to the line of text in the document | First select a line of text for which you want to change the case. |
Select the entire text in the document | Here, I'll select the entire document. |
Edit >> Change case | From the Main menu, click Edit and Change Case. |
Point to options,
All Upper case
All Lower case
Invert case
Title case

We can see options such as change to

Select Upper case | Now I'll select Title Case. |
Observe the changes in the document. | |
Point to the other options in the menu | Try other options and explore the respective output on your own. |
Next we will see the spell check option. | |
Type Oranges as Oranages | In this document, let's misspell the word Oranges as shown. |
Tools>> Highlight Misspelled Words | From the Main menu, select Tools and Highlight Misspelled Words. |
Point to the word with red color underline | Notice, that the misspelled word is now underlined in red color. |
Place the cursor on the word and right click. | Place the cursor on the word and right-click on it. |
Click Spelling Suggestions. | Click Spelling Suggestions. |
Select the correct word from the list. | Select the correct word from the list.

Check the check box, Insert Date and Time. Click Close. | Check the check box, Insert Date and Time. Click Close. |
Place the cursor on the first line.

Now, I want to insert the date and time on the first line of the document.

Point to the various date and time formats.
Select the second format. |
