Software and System Requirement

To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Mac OS version 14.5
  • Blender version 4.1

It is recommended to install Blender version 4.1 or higher.

To follow this tutorial, the learner must be familiar with the 3D cursor.

If not, please access the relevant tutorials on this website.

Point to the Interface of Blender. I have opened the Blender interface.

Let us first learn to zoom in and zoom out of the view.

Press Ctrl and plus(+) to zoom in the view of the 3D viewport. And press Ctrl and minus(-) to zoom out the view of the 3D viewport.

Hover over Zoom in/out icon Now we will learn to zoom using navigation tools.

Let's go to the right side of the 3D viewport. Observe a circle with arrows for X, Y, and Z axes. This is called Navigation gizmo.

Only narration Below the Navigation gizmo, observe there are some tools.

These are the navigation tools. Now locate the zoom tool.

Click on the zoom tool


Move the mouse

Click on it and hold the mouse.

Move the mouse outward and inward to zoom in and zoom out.

Scroll the mouse wheel up Now let us use the mouse wheel.

Scroll the mouse wheel upwards to zoom in.

Scroll the mouse wheel down Scroll the mouse wheel downwards to zoom out.
Only narration The second action we shall see is panning the view.

By panning the view we can change the view of the object. The viewing angle and magnification of the object will be the same.

Hover over the object There are many ways of doing this using the mouse and the keyboard.

First we will use the Shift key with the mouse wheel.

Hold Shift and press the mouse wheel and move the mouse. Hold the Shift key, press the mouse-wheel and move the mouse.

This action pans both left to right and up and down.

Move the mouse on the hand tool


Go to the right side of 3D viewport

Let us look at another way to pan the view.

Go to the navigation tools.

Click and move mouse on the hand tool Notice the hand tool. Click on it and hold the left mouse button.

Now move the mouse from left to right.

Move it to pan Observe how the 3D viewport is panning in sync with the mouse movement.

Pause the video. Try moving the mouse in other directions and observe how the 3D viewport pans.

Go to the Edit menu >> select Preferences.

You can also use your numpad keys to pan the view.

Go to the Edit menu and select on Preferences.

Cursor on the window.

On the left panel select Input. Here check the Emulate Numpad checkbox.

Blender Preferences window opens.

On the left panel select Input. Here check the Emulate Numpad checkbox. Close the Blender Preferences window.

Only narration The next action we shall see is to rotate the view.
Press and hold the mouse wheel and move the mouse in a square pattern. Now, to rotate the view, press your mouse wheel and move the mouse in a square pattern.

This gives us Turntable Rotation.

Only narration For more flexibility over the action of rotation you can use a trackball rotation.
Edit menu >> Preferences For that, let us go to the Edit menu. Click on Preferences.
Select Navigation Blender Preferences window opens.

On the left panel select Navigation.

Hover on trackball option Click on Trackball.

Close the Blender Preferences window.

Only narration Rotating the view can be done either left to right or up and down.
Hover on Navigation gizmo

Move the mouse left to right

Hover the mouse over the Navigation gizmo.

Press and hold down the left mouse button. Then move the mouse from left to right.

Move the mouse up to down For up and down rotation, move the mouse upward and downward direction.
Only narration We can also use the numpad shortcut keys.
Video Editor: 4 Press 4 to rotate the view to the left.
Video Editor: 6 Press 6 to rotate the view to the right.
Only narration Now let us rotate the view in an up and down directions using keys on numpad.
Video Editor: 2 Press 2 to rotate the view upwards.
Video Editor: 8 Press 8 to rotate the view downwards.

Go to 3D viewport menu bar >> View >> Navigation.

We have one more method to zoom, pan and rotate .

Let’s go to the 3D viewport menu bar and click on View.

Hover over the zoom, rotate and pan

Hover over the panel

Then click on Navigation. A submenu opens.

Here we can see the commands for zoom, rotate and pan.
