System and Software Requirement || To record this tutorial, I am using

  • Ubuntu Linux v16.04 OS
  • Freeplane v1.7.10 and
  • Gedit v3.18

  • Learner must be familiar with the Freeplane interface.
  • For pre-requisite tutorials, please visit this site.

Code Files || * Files used in this tutorial are provided in the Code files link.

  • Please download and extract the files.
  • Make a copy and then use them while practising.

|- || Go to Desktop folder || Go to Desktop. I have saved the input files on Desktop.

|- || Select teaching.mm, double click to open map. || Select the file icon teaching.mm Double click and open the map in Freeplane.

|- || Cursor on the map. || This is a map on Solar system.


Let’s add, descriptive details to nodes using the Note feature.

|- || Select Moon node.

Right click to the context menu. || Let's add a note to the Moon node. For this, select the node and right click to open the context menu.

|- || Choose Edit note in dialog. || From the menu, click on the Edit note in dialog.

|- || Cursor on the Edit note in dialog. || This opens an Edit note dialog box.

|- || Hover mouse over formatting options and Table pulldown. || Formatted texts, and tables can be added to nodes from here.

|- || Cursor on Moon node. || I will add description about Moon here.

|- || Cursor on the dialogue box. Type Details on Moon and press Enter in the form. || We may type the desired text in the form. I will type, Details on Moon for title and press Enter.

|- || Cursor on the map. || If the text is already present in the computer, it can also be copied here.

|- || Go to Desktop. Hover mouse next to Moon.txt icon in Desktop directory. || Go to Desktop. I have the details in a file named Moon dot txt, in the Desktop directory.

|- || Open file in gedit. || Double click on the file icon and open Moon.txt in a text editor.

You may use any text editor of your choice.

|- || Press Ctrl+A, then press Ctrl-C.

Close Gedit. || Let's highlight all the text in the file and copy it.

Let’s close the text editor.

|- || Press Ctrl+V. || Go back to Freeplane and paste the text in the notes box.

You may format the text, font and alignment if desired.

|- || Click on Ok. || I will leave it as is and click on the OK button.

|- || Hover mouse next to notes icon on Moon node. || Notice an icon of paper and pencil appears next to the Moon node.

|- || Cursor next to Sun node. || Next, add icons to the Sun node.

|- || Cursor on icon panel. Click to show View, Controls, Icons toolbar. || Click on the arrow on left middle side, to open the icons toolbar. You may also click on view, controls and check the box of Icons toolbar.

|- || Cursor on Sun node. || I had hyperlinked an mp3 audio file to the node.

Learner may pause the video, and click on the node to play it.

|- || Cursor on the node. || So, I want to add a sound speaker icon to it from the icons list in Freeplane.

|- || Click on the left side arrow to open the icons menu. || Click on the arrow on the left side of the screen to open the icons menu.

|- || Select the Sun node. || Select the Sun node.

|- || Scroll down the icons menu. || Scroll down the icons menu.

The icon will help to identify the link as an audio file, without clicking on it.

|- || Show speaker icon and click on it. || Locate the speaker icon and click on it to insert it on the selected node.

|- || Cursor next to speaker icon on Sun node. || The icon appears on the Sun node, indicating the presence of an audio resource.

|- || || Next, let's explore the join or merge node option.

|- || Select Teaching aids node. || Select the teaching aids node and notice the three child nodes on it.

They are force, velocity and acceleration.

|- || || The teacher wants the three concepts together on one node.

|- || Select the three child nodes, force, velocity and acceleration. || To merge the three nodes, first select all the three child nodes.

|- || Press Ctrl-J. Show the merged nodes. || Then press Ctrl-J to join the nodes.

Notice the three child nodes are merged or joined as one child node.

|- || Click on Edit, Node core, Join nodes with “\n” . || The menu alternate is found under Edit, Node core. There are many options here.

|- || Click on Edit, Node core, Join nodes with “\n” . || Control J merges the node contents with a newline between each of them.

|- || Show options in Edit, Node core options. || The nodes can also be merged with a space or comma, separation.

|- || Show options in Edit, Node core, split options || Notice that, we can also a long node name, into different nodes.

They can be split by counting the number of words.

|- || || Learner may pause the video and practice the join and split options.

|- || Cursor next to January node. || Next, let's import a directory structure to the January node.

|- || Show screenshot of class-files directory on Desktop. || I want to import the class-files directory from Desktop.

A directory can have many types of files.

|- || Select January node. || First, select the January node.

|- || Click on File, Import, Folder structure. || Click on File, Import and Folder structure.

Select the folder to import dialog box opens prompting the user to choose the folder.

|- || Choose the class-files folder and click on open. || Choose the class-files folder in the Desktop directory and click on open.

|- || Unfold class node. || A new class-files node is created.

Let's unfold the class-files node.

|- || Hover mouse over added child node. || Notice, the files in the directory are hyperlinked to the node.

|- || || We can also add another concept map to our existing map.

|- || Show the import-map.mm file icon. || I will demonstrate it.

I have a map named import-map dot mm, located in the Desktop.

|- || Cursor on the map. || This map can be incorporated in different ways.

|- || Cursor on the map. || Each method gives a slightly different look from the other.

|- || Cursor on February node. || I want to attach it to the February node.

|- || || We can import the map using the linked file option.

|- || Select February node.

Click on Edit, Link, Add hyperlink (choose) . || Select February node.

Click on Edit, Link, Add hyperlink (choose).

|- || Choose import-map.mm from Desktop folder. click ok. || A dialogue box opens.

Choose import-map dot mm and click on Open.

|- || Cursor next to February node to show the arrow. || A red arrow appears next to February, indicating a linked file.

|- || Press Ctrl+S . || I will save the map by pressing Ctrl+S.

|- || Click on File, Import, Linked branch. || Now, click on File, Import, Linked branch.

|- || Choose import-map.mm, from the Desktop folder. Click on Ok. || Choose import-map.mm, from the Desktop folder. Click on the OK button as seen here.

|- || Cursor next to February node. || The map is attached to the February node through it's root node. We can use the import function to add another concept map.

|- || Create a sibling node to February, name it import. || Create a sibling node to February, name it import and select it.

|- || Select the import node. Press Ctrl+S. || Do not forget to save the map before importing another map.

|- || Click on File, Import, Branch. || Click on File, Import, Branch.

|- || Cursor on the dialogue box. || A dialogue box appears prompting for the file name.

|- || Choose import-map.mm from Desktop folder and click on Ok. || Choose import-map.mm from the Desktop folder and click on Ok .

|- || Hover mouse on attached map root node. || The map gets attached to the import node.

Notice the different ways, maps or directories can get attached to the map.

|- || Click and hover mouse on File, Import, Linked branch without root. || The File, Import, Linked branch without root is slightly different from above.

|- || || In this option, the map is imported without the root node.

|- || Cursor on the map. || You may pause the video and practice this import option.

|- || Click on File, Save map. || Click on File, Save map to save the map.

|- || Click on File, Quit Freeplane. || Click on File, Quit Freeplane to quit Freeplane.
