Datasets

All the datasets required for this tutorial are available in Code files link.
Slide Number 6

About GIS

About GIS
  • GIS stands for Geographic Information System.
  • It is a system for capturing, storing, querying, analyzing and displaying geospatial data.
Slide Number 7

Components of GIS

GIS requires the following components.
  1. Computer System
  2. GIS Software, and
  3. Geospatial Data
Slide Number 8

Components of Geospatial Data

Geospatial Data has two components - Spatial data and Attribute data.
  • Spatial data refers to the location, geometry or shape.
  • Attribute data are characteristics such as name, length, speed limit, direction, etc.
Slide Number 9

Spatial Data

Spatial Data is of two types- Vector Data and Raster Data.

Let us download vector dataset from Internet.

Open Firefox/Chrome web browser.

Type www.naturalearthdata.com

Open any web browser.

In the address bar, type www.naturalearthdata.com.

Press Enter.

Click on Downloads link

Natural Earth data website opens.

Click on Downloads link.

Scroll down

Downloads page opens.

Scroll down the page.

Point towards the scales.

Point towards the details.

You can see three different scales of dataset.

Large, Medium and Small.

Under Large scale data >> Click on Cultural button

Scroll down

Let us download a dataset for demostration.

Under Large scale data, click on Cultural button.

Scroll down the webpage. A webpage opens.

Scroll down the page.

Here, we can see various available datasets.

Click on Download countries tab. Let us download the country administration boundary files.

Under heading Admin 0 – Countries, click on Download countries tab.

Point to the dialog box.

Selct Save file option.

Click on OK.

A dialog-box opens, which prompts you to save the file.

Select Save file option.

Click on OK.

Right-click and select Extract Here option.

Double-click to open the folder

Point to all the files.

Double-click on the extracted folder.

Here we see many files with different file extensions.

This is a vector type of dataset.

Spatial Data-Vector Data

About Vector data.
  • Discrete features such as wells, roads and land-use types is Vector Data.
  • Vector data can be of point, line or polygon format.
Cursor on slide. Let us open QGIS and view one of the downloaded files.
Double-click on QGIS icon.

Cursor on the interface.

Here, I have already opened QGIS interface.
Click on layer on the menu bar.

Click on add layer.

Click on add vector layer.

Click on Layer menu on the menu bar.

From the menu options, select Add Layer.

From the sub-menu, click on Add Vector Layer.

Point to Add Vector Layer dialog-box .

Add Vector Layer dialog-box opens.

Select File as Source type and System as Encoding.

Click on Browse.

Locate the folder ne_10m_admin_0_countries.

Under Source heading, click on Browse button.

Navigate to the admin countries folder downloaded from the Natural Earth data website.

From the folder, select the file ne_10m_populated_countries.shp

Click Open.

From the contents of the folder, select the file with .shp extension.

Click on Open.

Click Open in Add vector layer dialog-box.

Point to themap on canvas.

In the Add vector layer dialog-box, click on Open.

In the dialog-box, name the file as Map hyphen 1.

I will save it on the Desktop.

Click on Save.

The map will be saved as Map hyphen 1 dot qgs on the Desktop.

Spatial Data - Raster Data

About Raster Data.

  • Continuous features that exist spatially between observations is Raster Data.
  • Raster data is made up of cells in row and column format.
Cursor on slide Let's download raster dataset from Bhuvan website.
Slide Number 12

Bhuvan Website Link

http://bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in/data/download/index.php
