00:01 | Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on Create an A4 Poster using Inkscape. |
00:07 | In this tutorial, we will learn to: |
00:10 | Change the Document properties |
00:12 | Design an A4 poster and |
00:14 | Save the poster in pdf. |
00:17 | To record this tutorial, I am using: |
00:19 | Ubuntu Linux 12.04 OS |
00:22 | Inkscape version 0.48.4 |
00:26 | Let us open Inkscape. |
00:28 | Go to File. Click on New. |
00:32 | These are the default canvas sizes that are available. |
00:37 | My canvas is, by default, in A4 size. |
00:41 | So, I will leave it as it is. |
00:44 | If it is not so, on your machine, then select A4 size. |
00:49 | Let us now change some settings. |
00:51 | Go to File. Click on Document properties. |
00:54 | A dialog box opens up where we can find various tabs and options. |
00:59 | Let us learn about them one by one. |
01:03 | In the first tab Page, click on the Default units drop-down list. |
01:08 | As I click one-by-one, observe that the unit of the ruler changes. |
01:13 | Let me keep the unit as pixels. |
01:16 | Background option helps to change the transparency and color of the background. |
01:21 | When we click on it, a new dialog box appears. |
01:24 | Move the RGB sliders to the left and right. |
01:29 | To make the background colour visible on the canvas, move the alpha slider towards the right. |
01:35 | Now the transparency changes to the selected 'RGB' values. |
01:40 | Observe that the color on the background option, in the Document properties window, changes as I move. |
01:47 | Bring the Alpha slider back to the extreme left and close the dialog box. |
01:52 | Under Page size, we find many options. |
01:55 | We can change the size of the canvas using these options too. |
02:00 | As I click, observe the change in the canvas size. |
02:04 | Let us keep the page size as A4. |
02:08 | Orientation can be changed to either Portrait or Landscape. |
02:12 | Click on both the options and observe the change on the canvas. |
02:17 | We can change the width and height of the canvas using the Width and Height parameters. |
02:23 | Click on the Units drop-down list. Here, we can change the units according to our requirement. |
02:31 | Let us now change the units to pixels. |
02:34 | Click on Resize page to content option. |
02:37 | The various available options open up. |
02:41 | We can set margins for all the sides here. |
02:45 | After setting the margins, one needs to click on the button Resize page to drawing or selection. |
02:51 | Next is the Border option. We can see 3 check-box options here. |
02:57 | To demonstrate these options, let me first draw an ellipse in this manner. |
03:03 | The first option makes the page border, that is, the border of the canvas visible. |
03:08 | Uncheck this option and observe that the borders disappear. |
03:13 | Then again, check the option and observe that the borders re-appear. |
03:18 | The second option sets the border on top of the drawing so that it is clearly visible. |
03:25 | Once again check and uncheck this option and observe what happens on the canvas. |
03:31 | The third option shows a shadow of the canvas on the right and bottom. |
03:36 | Notice here, the border to the right and bottom are thicker than the other two sides. |
03:42 | Uncheck the third option and observe that this shadow disappears. |
03:47 | We can use all these options according to our requirement and preference. |
03:52 | The Border color option allows us to decide the color of the border. |
03:57 | Let us leave the default border color as it is. |
04:01 | Next, click on Guides tab. |
04:03 | Guides help you align text and graphic objects on the canvas. |
04:08 | You can create ruler guides here. |
04:12 | Click on the vertical ruler and drag a guideline. |
04:15 | Now check and uncheck the first option Show Guides |
04:19 | and observe the guideline appears and disappears on the canvas. |
04:25 | Guide color is the color of the guideline. |
04:28 | Highlight color is the color of the guideline when it is being dragged to a certain position. |
04:33 | The default colours of the guide and the highlight are shown here. |
04:37 | You can change it as per your preference. |
04:41 | I will leave the default colors as they are. |
04:44 | Snap guides while dragging option helps to snap the objects or bounding box to the nearest guidelines while dragging. |
04:52 | Next, click on the Grids tab. |
04:54 | Using this option, we can set the grid that appears behind the artwork on the canvas. |
05:00 | Grids are helpful to position objects on the canvas but they do not get printed. |
05:07 | Click on the drop-down list. |
05:09 | Rectangular grid and Axonometric grid are the two types of grids available. |
05:16 | Select Rectangular grid and click on the New button. |
05:20 | Immediately, a grid is formed on the canvas background. |
05:25 | We can set the grid properties as per our requirement using the available options. |
05:31 | We can remove the grid by clicking on the Remove button at the bottom. |
05:36 | In a similar way, you can try the options for Axonometric grid too. |
05:41 | The options in the next 3 tabs will be covered in the advanced level tutorials in this series. |
05:47 | Now, let us start creating the poster. |
05:50 | So, first let me delete the ellipse and the guideline. |
05:53 | For our poster, we will first design a background. |
05:58 | Click on the Rectangle tool. |
06:00 | Draw a large rectangle that covers the whole canvas. |
06:06 | Color it with light blue gradient. |
06:08 | Next, draw a header area on the top |
06:16 | and a footer area at the bottom of the canvas using the Bezier tool. |
06:23 | We will color it blue. |
06:25 | Let us import the Spoken Tutorial logo now. |
06:28 | This logo has been provided to you in the Code Files link. |
06:32 | So, first of all, pause the tutorial. Click on Code Files and download the zip file. |

06:47 | Go to File menu. Click on Import. |
06:51 | Go to folder where the logo is saved. |
06:54 | Select the Spoken Tutorial logo and click on Open. |
06:59 | A new dialog box opens up. Click on OK. |
07:03 | Now the logo is imported on our canvas. |
07:06 | Resize it to 100×100 pixels. |
07:09 | Place it on the top left corner of the header area. |
07:14 | Now, type the text “Spoken Tutorial”. |
07:18 | Make it Bold. |
07:20 | Change the text font size to 48. |
07:24 | Place it to the right of the logo. |
07:27 | After this, type the text “partner with us...help bridge the digital divide”. |
07:35 | Change the font size to 20. |
07:39 | Next, let us add some text. |
07:42 | I have already saved a sample text in a LibreOffice Writer document on my machine. |
07:47 | This sample text has been provided to you in the Code Files. |
07:51 | Please locate it in your saved folder. |
07:54 | Now, I will copy and paste this text in the empty space on my poster. |
08:00 | Change the font size to 28. |
08:04 | Set the line spacing. |
08:06 | Create bullets and place before each sentence. |
08:10 | We will add 2 images below that. |
08:13 | As before, import them one by one. |
08:17 | I have saved them in the images folder. |
08:20 | These images have been provided to you in the Code Files. |
08:24 | Please locate them in your saved folder. |
08:27 | Select the images and resize them. |
08:30 | Move them to the bottom area of the poster. |
08:33 | Let us write the contact details at the footer area. |
08:37 | Once again, copy and paste the text from LibreOffice Writer document. |
08:42 | Change the font size to 18. |
08:45 | Now, our poster is ready. |
08:47 | Next, let us learn how to save it in pdf format. |
08:51 | Go to File and click on Save As. |
08:55 | A dialog box appears. |
08:58 | Choose the folder in which you want to save. |
09:00 | I will choose Desktop. |

09:16 | Then click on Save button. |
09:18 | Our poster is saved in the Desktop. |
