00:01 | Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on “Create a 3-fold brochure” using Inkscape. |
00:05 | In this tutorial, we will learn to: |
00.08 | * Use guidelines and to set them |
00:10 | * Settings for a 3-fold brochure |
00:12 | * Design a 3-fold brochure. |
00:15 | We will also learn the importance of using layers. |
00:18 | To record this tutorial, I am using: |
00:21 | * Ubuntu Linux 12.04 OS |
00:24 | * Inkscape version 0.48.4 |
00:28 | This is a sample 3 fold brochure. As we open it, we can see the 3 folds. |
00:34 | So, there are 6 sections in all. |
00:37 | The outer side contains sections 1, 5 and 6. |
00:42 | The inner side of the brochure contains sections 2, 3 and 4. |
00:46 | Let us learn how to create a brochure like this one. |
00:51 | Open Inkscape. |
00:53 | Click on File and go to Document Properties. |
00:56 | Let's do some basic settings first. |
00:59 | Change: |
01.00 | * Default units to mm |
01.03 | * Page Size to A4 |
01.05 | * Orientation to Landscape |
01.07 | * Custom Size Units to mm. |
01.11 | We have to divide the canvas into 3 folds. |
01.14 | For that, observe that the width of the canvas is 297. |
01.18 | So, we have to divide 297 into 3 parts which is 99 for each of the three sections. |
01.27 | Close the Document Properties dialog box now. |
01.30 | Click and drag a guideline from the left side onto the canvas. |
01.35 | Double-click on this guideline. |
01.37 | A dialog box opens up. |
01.41 | Change the value of 'X' to 99 and click on OK. |
01.45 | Click and drag another guideline from the left side onto the canvas. |
01.50 | Double-click on it to open the dialog box. |
01.53 | Here, change the value of 'X' to 198. |
01.56 | Now our canvas is divided into 3 equal sections. |
02.01 | These guidelines tell us where each fold will start and end. |
02.06 | Let us save this file twice: |
02.08 | One for the inner side of the brochure |
02.11 | and the other for the outer side. |
02.13 | Go to File and click on Save as. |
02.16 | I will save the file on my Desktop with the name Brochure-OUT.svg. |
02.22 | Once again go to File and click on Save as. |
02.26 | This time, I will give the name Brochure-IN.svg and click on Save. |
02.33 | So, now we have 2 files- one for the inner section and one for the outer section. |
02.39 | Let us start with Brochure-IN.svg. |
02.43 | As we go about creating this brochure, it is desirable to use different layers for different elements. |
02.50 | Towards the end of this tutorial, we see the benefits of doing so. |
02.54 | Let us first design the inner sections of the brochure i.e. sections 2, 3 and 4. |
03.00 | Using the Bezier tool, draw a graphic illustration in the middle of the canvas. Color it blue. |
03.09 | Remove the stroke. |
03.14 | Create a new layer and name it as you prefer. |
03.19 | Create a circle of 150X150 pixels. |
03.26 | Color it green. |
03.28 | Duplicate the circle and create 5 more circles of different sizes as shown. |
03.36 | Place them around the graphic illustration as demonstrated. |
03.40 | Inside these circles, we will place some images. |
03.44 | I have already edited the images to a circular shape and saved them in my Documents folder. |
03.50 | For your convenience, these images have been provided to you in the Code files link. |
03.56 | Pause the tutorial, click on the link and save these images to your preferred location. |
04.02 | After this, resume the tutorial. |
04.04 | Go to File, click on Import and then on Image1. |
04.09 | Keep it on top of the first circle. |
04.12 | In a similar way, repeat the steps for the other 5 images. |
04.17 | Align them using Align and Distribute option. |
04.20 | Now, your canvas should look like this. |
04.25 | Next create a new layer. |
04.28 | Select the Bezier tool and draw an arrow. |
04.34 | Color it gray. |
04.38 | Remove the stroke. |
04.41 | Go to Filters menu. Select Shadows and Glows and then click on Drop Shadow. |
04.47 | Check on Preview box to notice the effect. |
04.50 | Now click on Apply. Close the dialog box. |
04.55 | Keep it on the top of the first circle in an overlapping manner, as shown. |
05.01 | Duplicate this arrow twice to create 2 more arrows. |
05.05 | Keep them on 2nd and 3rd circles respectively, as shown. |
05.10 | Now, all the graphic elements are done. |
05.13 | We will now insert the relevant texts. |
05.15 | On the new layer, type “Introduction” on the first arrow. |
05.20 | Type “Features” on the second arrow. |
05.24 | Type “Usage” on the third arrow. |
05.28 | Now, we have to insert the text under each of these sections. |
05.33 | I will copy and paste the texts from a LibreOffice Writer file that I have saved already. |
05.40 | This file is available to you in your saved folder. |
05.43 | Please locate it and copy the text from it. |
05.47 | Then paste it as shown on a new layer. |
05.50 | Reduce the font size to 15 and align them using Text and Font option. |
05.55 | Create a bullet of green color using the ellipse tool. |
05.59 | Place it to the right of the first sentence. |
06.02 | Repeat the same process for all the sentences. |
06.05 | Now the inner part of the brochure is ready. |
06.08 | Let's press CTRL + S to save our SVG file. |
06.12 | Now you can hide or show the layers that you want in the final brochure. |
06.18 | Let us now save the same file into PDF. |
06.21 | Go to File, click on Save As. |
06.24 | Change the file extension to PDF. |
06.29 | Click on Save. |
06.31 | A new dialog box appears. |
06.34 | For printing purpose, the resolution must be 300. |
06.37 | For web, it can be 72. |
06.40 | Let me keep it as 300. |
06.42 | Now click on OK. |
06.44 | Let us now change the opacity of the arrows. |
06.47 | Go to the Arrow layer and change the opacity of the layer to 70. |
06.52 | I have also added a new layer with ink-blots. |
06.58 | Save the file in SVG and PDF formats. |
07.04 | Compare the 2 'pdf's to understand the difference. |
07.08 | Next, let us create the outer part of the brochure. |
07.12 | Go to File. Click on Open. |
07.14 | Select Brochure-OUT.svg. |
07.18 | Now we have to design the 1st, 4th and 5th sections. |
07.22 | Once again, remember to use different layers for different elements. |
07.28 | Draw a graphic illustration on the top left using the Bezier tool as shown. |
07.33 | Color it blue. Remove the stroke. |
07.36 | Import Spoken Tutorial logo which is in your saved folder. |
07.40 | Reduce the size and place it on the top left corner of the 1st section. |
07.46 | Type “Spoken Tutorial” and align it to the right of the logo. |
07.51 | Change the font size to 25. |
07.54 | Draw a circle below the text and color it yellow. |
07.58 | Import 'Inkscape' logo. |
08.00 | Place it on the top of the yellow circle. |
08.03 | Type “Inkscape” below the logo. Change the font size to 45. |
08.09 | I have added details about Spoken Tutorial project and inserted the relevant logos. |
08.15 | Please do so likewise. |
08.17 | I have aligned all the elements using |
08.19 | Text and font |
08.21 | and Align and Distribute options. |
08.24 | Now the outer side of the brochure is ready. |
08.28 | Go to File. |
08.29 | Click on Save As. |
08.31 | Change the format to SVG and click on Save. |
08.37 | Repeat the same process. |
08.39 | Change the extension to PDF. |
08.41 | Click on Save. |
08.43 | This is our completed brochure. |
08.46 | If you have used layers for the various elements then you can conveniently change the colours and opacity. |
