Opening Slide Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on “Create a Tri-fold brochure” using Inkscape.
Learning Objectives (Slide) In this tutorial we will learn to
  • Use guidelines and to set them
  • Settings for a 3-fold brochure
  • Design a 3-fold brochure.


We will also learn the importance of using layers.

System requirement (Slide) To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux 12.04 OS
  • Inkscape version 0.48.4
Showing Blender brochure (Animation) This is a sample 3 fold brochure. As we open it, we can see the 3 folds.


So there are 6 sections in all.

Showing Blender brochure (Animation) The outer side contains sections 1, 5 and 6.


The inner side of the brochure contains sections 2, 3 and 4.

Open Inkscape Let us learn how to create a brochure like this one.
Open Inkscape>>Document properties Open Inkscape.

Click on File and go to Document Properties.

Change/click as per narration. Let's do some basic setting first.

Change:

  • Default units to mm
  • Page Size to A4
  • Orientation to Landscape
  • Custom Size Units to mm.
We have to divide the canvas into 3 folds.
Point to the width parameter For that, observe that the width of the canvas is 297.
Point to the canvas So we have to divide 297 into 3 parts, which is 99 for each of the three sections.


Close the Document Properties dialog box now.

Click and drag the ruler >> Point to the guideline Click and drag a guideline from the left side onto the canvas.
Double click on the guideline Double click on this guideline.

A dialog box opens up.

Change the value of X to 99. Change the value of X to 99 and click on OK.
Click and drag the ruler >> Point to the guideline Click and drag another guideline from the left side onto the canvas.
Double click on the guideline>> Change X value to 198 Double-click on it to open the dialog box.


Here change the value of X to 198.

Point to the canvas Now our canvas is divided into 3 equal sections.


These guidelines tell us where each fold will start and end.

Point to the canvas Let us save this file twice:
  • One for the inner side of the brochure
  • and the other for the outer side.
Go to File >> Save as >> Brochure-IN.svg Go to File and click on Save as.

I will save the file on my Desktop with the name Brochure-IN.svg.

Go to File >> Save as >> Brochure-OUT.svg Once again go to File and click on Save as.

This time I will give the name Brochure-OUT.svg and click on Save.

Switch to Brochure-IN.svg. So, now we have 2 files, one for the inner sections and one for the outer sections.

Let us switch to Brochure-IN.svg.

Open the Layers panel As we go about creating this brochure, it is desirable to use different layers for different elements.


Towards the end of this tutorial, we see the benefits of doing so.

Point to the canvas Let us first design the inner sections of the brochure i.e. sections 2, 3 and 4.
Draw graphic illustration >> color it blue >> reduce opacity to 70 Using the bezier tool, draw a graphic illustration and color it blue.


Reduce the opacity level to 70.

Place it in the middle. Place the illustration in the middle of the canvas.
Create a layer and name it "circle" >> Draw a circle of 45X45 pixels Create a new layer and name it as you prefer.


Create a circle of 45X45 pixels and color it blue.

Duplicate the circle >> change it to 43X 43 pixels Duplicate the circle and change its size to 43X43 pixels.
Keep it on the top of blue circle >> color it green Place it on the top of the blue circle. Color it green.
Repeat the same process and create 5 more circles Likewise, create another 5 circles.


Place them around the graphic illustration as demonstrated.

Show the images Inside these circles, we will place some images.


I have already edited the images to a circular shape and saved them in my Documents folder.

Show the images For your convenience, these images have been provided to you in the Code files link.


Pause the tutorial, click on the link and save these images to your preferred location. After this, resume the tutorial.

Create a new layer >> Import Inkscape logo Create a new layer.

Go to File, click on Import and then on Image1.

Reduce the size of Image1 >> keep it on top of the first circle. Reduce the size of this image and keep it on top of the first circle.
Repeat the same procedure In a similar way, repeat the steps for the other 5 images.
Show the canvas completed upto this point. Now, your canvas should look like this.
Draw an arrow using bezier tool on a new layer >> Color it gray Next, select the bezier tool and draw an arrow on a new layer. Color it gray.


Keep it on the top of the first circle in an overlapping manner, as shown.

Filters menu >> Shadows and Glows >> Drop Shadow >> Apply Go to Filters menu. Select Shadows and Glows and then click on Drop Shadow.


Now click on Apply and notice the effect on the arrow.

Duplicate and align them Duplicate this arrow twice to create 2 more arrows.


Keep them on 2nd and 3rd circles respectively, as shown.

Point to the graphic elements on the canvas Now all the graphic elements are done.


We will now insert the relevant texts.

<<PAUSE>>

Type “Introduction to Inkscape” on a new layer. On a new layer, type “Introduction to Inkscape” on the first arrow.
Type “Features of Inkscape” Type “Features of Inkscape” on the second arrow.
Type “Usage of Inkscape” Type “Usage of Inkscape” on the third arrow.
Point to the canvas Now we have to insert the text under each of these sections.
Copy text from LibreOffice Writer and paste I will copy and paste the texts from a LibreOffice Wrier file that I have saved already.

This file is available to you in your saved folder. Pls locate it and copy the text from it. Then paste it as shown on a new layer. <<PAUSE>>

Select the ellipse tool >> create a bullet Create a bullet of light green color using the ellipse tool.


Place it to the right of the first sentence.

Repeat the process Repeat the same process for all the sentences.
Point to the canvas Now the inner part of the brochure is ready.

Let's press CTRL + S to save our SVG file.

Click the Hide icon on/off. Now you can hide or show the layers that you want in the final brochure.
Point to the canvas Let us now save the same file into PDF.
Go to File >> Save as Change the extension to PDF >> Save Go to File and click on Save As.


Change the file extension to PDF.


Click on Save.


<<PAUSE>>

Come back to Brochure-IN.svg file >> Arrows layer >> opacity to 70 >> add ink-blots >> save as svg and pdf Let us now change the opacity of the arrows.


Go to the arrows layer and change the opacity of the layer to 70.


I am also adding a new layer with ink-blots.


Save the file in SVG and PDF formats.


Compare the 2 pdfs to understand the difference.

Next let us create the outer part of the brochure.
File >> Open >> Brochure-OUT.svg Go to File. Click on Open, select Brochure-OUT.svg.
Point to the canvas Now we have to design the 1st, 4th and 5th sections.
Once again, remember to use different layers for different elements.
Draw graphic illustration >> Color it blue Draw a graphic illustration on the top left using the Bezier tool as shown.


Color it blue.

Import Spoken Tutorial logo >> align it Import Spoken Tutorial logo which is in your saved folder.


Place it on the top left corner of the 1st section.

Type “Spoken Tutorial” >> Align it Type “Spoken Tutorial” and align to the right of the logo.
Draw a circle >> color it white Draw a circle below the text and color it white.
Import Inkscape logo Import Inkscape logo and resize it to 120X120 pixels.


Place it on the top of the white circle.

Type “Inkscape” Type “Inkscape” below the logo.

Point to the canvas I have added details about Spoken Tutorial project and inserted the relevant logos.

Pls do so likewise.

Point to the canvas >> display the finished outer side. I have aligned all the elements using Text and font and Align and Distribute options.


Now the outer side of the brochure is ready.

File >> Save as >> Change the extension to PDF >> Save Go to File. Click on Save to save as SVG format.

Then click on Save As.

Change the extension to PDF.


Click on Save.

Show the completed brochure This is our completed brochure.
Show the 2 other colour and opacity options. If you have used layers for the various elements, then you can conveniently change the colours and opacity.


These are 2 other colour schemes that I have created of the same brochure.

Summary (Slide) Let us summarize.


In this tutorial we learnt to

  • Use guidelines and to set them
  • Settings for a 3-fold brochure
  • Design a 3-fold brochure.


We also learnt the importance of using layers and obtaining the same brochure in various colour schemes.
