Welcome to this Spoken Tutorial on Vector Portrait Illustration using Inkscape.

In this tutorial we will,
  • Import an image into Inkscape
  • Adjust the Opacity to achieve transparency
  • Draw face, neck, eyes and other details using Bezier tool
  • Arrange the layers from the Layers panel

To record this tutorial, I am using,
  • Mac OS version 10.14.6
  • Inkscape version 1.2.2

Prerequisites

To understand this tutorial, the learner requires a good command of Inkscape tools.

Code Files

The image used in this tutorial is provided in the Code Files link.


Please download and extract the file.


Make a copy and then use it while practising.

Open Inkscape Here, I have already opened the Inkscape interface.
File >> Document Properties >> Orientation >>

Select the Landscape Orientation


Click on Close button(X)

Let us go to File and click on Document Properties.


In the dialog box, select Landscape Orientation.


Close the Document Properties dialog box.

File >> Import >> Select file to import >> Desktop >>

Select the file >> Click on Open

Go to File and click on Import.


In the dialog box Select file to import.


Go to the location on your computer where you had saved the image.


Select File and click on Open.

Jpeg image bitmap import window opens.


Click on Ok >> Close the dialog box>>Canvas


Point out imported image and resize.


Png bitmap image import window opens.


Click on the OK button to close the window.


Now, the image is loaded on the canvas.


I will resize the image on the canvas.

Go to the Layers panel.

>> Double click on the selected Layer>>

Rename the name as ‘Reference’

Let’s go to the Layers panel.


Double click on the selected Layer and rename the layer as Reference.

Canvas>> Adjust the image>>Edit Duplicate>>

Canvas>>move the duplicated reference image outside the Canvas

Adjust the image on the Canvas.


Right click on the Reference layer.


Click on Duplicate Layer to make a copy of the reference image.


Select Reference copy layer and move it out of the Canvas as shown.


Duplicated reference image is useful while selecting colors from it.


Layers panel>> Click on lock icon The reference image must be retained as a reference as long as you work.


Let’s go to the Layers panel.

Click the lock icon to lock the reference image layer.

Layers panel>> Create a new layer In the Layers panel, create a new layer and name it as ‘Face’.

Click on the Add button.

Add a Separate Layer


Please remember to make a separate layer for each part of the drawing.


Give a proper name for each layer.

For example Face, Eye-Left, Eye-Right, Neck, Hair etc.

Layers panel>>Select face layer >> Canvas>>

Draw a Face>>Fill>> decrease the Opacity>> Canvas.

Let’s go to the Layers panel and select the Face layer.


On the face layer, draw the shape of the face using Bezier tool.


We can adjust the nodes while drawing if needed.


Go to the Fill tab and decrease the Opacity as shown.


Now, we can see the parts of the face like eyes, lips and others clearly.

Set Opacity value

Learners please note the following:


Decrease the opacity to a lower level, while drawing a particular shape.


This is to achieve transparency and ease of the drawing.


You can adjust the opacity value as per your requirement.


Layers panel>> Create a new layer>>

Toolbar >> Select the Bezier tool>> Canvas >>

Draw a white part of the eye, eyelashes and eyelid using the Bezier tool.

Go to the Layers panel.


Create a new layer and name it as ‘Eye-Left’.

Click on the Add button.


Go to the Toolbar and select the Bezier tool.


Go to the Canvas.


Please make sure that ‘Eye-Left’ layer is selected.


Let’s draw the parts of the eye using the Bezier tool.


Draw the white part of the eye, eyelashes, iris, pupil and eyelid of the eye.

Go to File>>Click on Save>>


In the Save dialog box type the filename asCreating-Vector-Portrait-Illustration.svg>>


Click on Save button.

Let us now save the file.


Go to File. Click on Save.


In the Save dialog box type the filename as Creating-Vector-Portrait-Illustration.svg.


Click on Save button.


Layers panel>> Create a new layer>>Toolbar

>> Select the Bezier tool>> Canvas >>

Draw a white part of the eye, eyelashes and eyelid using the Bezier tool.


Similarly, create the Eye-right layer.


Draw the parts of the right eye using the Bezier tool.


Layers panel>> Create a new layer>>

Toolbar >> Select the Bezier tool>>

draw lips, teeth, nose, nostrils, eyebrows, neck, hair, coat and cap.


Let’s go to the Layers panel.

Create a new layer and name it as ‘Lips’. Click on the Add button.


Go to the Canvas.


On the ‘Lips’ layer, draw lips using the Bezier tool.


Now, let us draw nose, nostrils, eyebrows, neck and hair.


Please make sure that the drawing is detailed to get a precision.


It creates a clear and realistic look.


Similarly, draw the sweater and beanie.


Change the Opacity value to 100 for the entire drawing.

Arrange the layers from the Layers panel as shown.

Canvas >> Point to the illustration>>

Layers panel>>

hide the duplicated reference image by clicking on the eye icon of the reference image layer.

The vector portrait illustration of the photo is completed.


In a similar way, we can create various other illustrations using this method.

Portrait coloring and detailing will be covered in the upcoming tutorials.
