Log in to DSpace with an administrator account.

I will login with the administrator account.

Only narration We are now in the admin’s My DSpace page.
Click on Browse tab Click on the Browse tab in the navigation bar.
Select Communities & Collections Select Communities & Collections from the drop-down.

Communities and Collections page opens up.

Click on Create Top-Level Community To create a Community, click on the Create Top-Level Community button in Admin Tools section.
Point to Create Community label Create Community page opens up.

It displays the Community's metadata form.

Basic metadata elements of communities are,

  • Short Description
  • Introductory text
  • Copyright text

Point to create button By clicking on the Create button at the bottom of the page, a Community without logo is created.
Click on Upload a Logo button For this demonstration, let us upload a logo.

To do so, click on the Upload a Logo button.

Point to Upload Logo We will be redirected to the Upload Logo page.
Click on Browse button Click on the Browse button.
Point to File Upload pop up window File Upload window opens up.
Select logo image

Select communitylogo.png from Downloads directory.

Browse and select the logo image from your machine.

The same is available in the Code Files link. I have downloaded the logo image in the Downloads directory in my machine.

Click Open button Then, click on the Open button.
Point to logo name Immediately, the selected logo filename appears next to the Browse button.

Narration only Now, let us proceed to learn how to delete the Community.
Click the Edit button Click on the Edit button in Admin Tools.
Click on Delete this Community button Click on the Delete this Community button above the Community's settings section.
Point to Delete Community Immediately, we will be asked to confirm Delete Community action.
Narration only To confirm, click on the Delete button.
Narration only Once you click the Delete button, the Community will be deleted.
Click on Cancel button For this demonstration, I will not delete any Community.

So, I will click on the Cancel button.

Narration only We are back to the Community home page.
Narration only Now, let us proceed to create the Community Administrator role for our Community.

We will assign the Community Administrator role to the EPerson with the ID dspace.u2@gmail.com

Click the Edit button Click on the Edit button in the Admin Tools.
Point to Community Administrator Community's settings section has the settings for Community Administrator.
Click on the Create button Click on the Create button next to the Community Administrators label.
Point to Edit Group We will be redirected to the Edit Group page.
Narration only Observe that this Edit group page is the one, which we had used to create a group.

That means, DSpace is creating a group of Community Administrators.

Point to Name field By default, DSpace generates a name for the group.

But we can provide our own name to the group of Community Administrators. For this demonstration, I will keep the default name as it is.

Click on Select E-people Now, we will add the EPerson as a Community Administrator.

Click on the Select E-people button below the EPerson Members field.

Point to Select E-people window Select E-people pop-up window opens up.
Click on the Add button Click on the Add button adjacent to the ID of the respective EPerson.

I will select the user with the email ID dspace.u2@gmail.com.

Point to the added user in the EPerson Members field Immediately the selected user will be added to the EPerson Members field.
Click on the Close button If you wish to add more members, then repeat the same steps.

Once done, close the Select E-people pop-up window by clicking on the Close button.

Select EPerson from EPerson Member field

We can also remove the member from the group.

To do so, select the respective member to be removed from the EPerson Members field.

Point on the Remove Selected button Then click on the Remove Selected button, below the EPerson Members field.

I’m skipping this step for this demonstration.

Click on Update Group Once done, click on the Update Group button at the bottom of the page to update the changes.
Narration only So, we have now successfully assigned the Community Administrator role to EPerson.

Let us proceed to cross-verify the same.

Click on Content tab in navigation bar Click on the Content tab in the navigation bar.
Select Communities & Collections Select Communities & Collections from the drop-down.
Select IITB Digital Library Select the Community.

I am selecting the IITB Digital Library.

Point to Community home page The Community home page appears.
Click the Edit button Click on the Edit button in the Admin Tools.
Click the Edit button next to Community Administrators Now, click on the Edit button next to Community Administrators.
Point to EPerson Members field We can see that EPerson has been assigned the Community Administrator’s role.
Narration only The Community Administrator has authority to manage the Community.
Narration only Now, let us proceed to create a Sub-community.

Hierarchically, Sub-community is created under the Community.

Narration only To create a Sub-community first we have to select a Community.
Click on Content tab in navigation bar >>Select Communities & Collections Click on the Content tab in the navigation bar and select Communities & Collections from the drop-down.
Narration Only Select the Community.
Select IITB Digital Library I am selecting IITB Digital Library.
Point to Community home page Community home page appears.
Click on the button Create Sub-community Click on the button Create Sub-community in the Admin Tools section.
Point to Create Community label The Create Community page opens up.

It contains the Community's metadata form.

Point to Community's metadata Scan through the Community's metadata form.

The form is the same as the one which we used to create the Community.

Point to Name and Introductory Text

Sub-community Name : Electrical Engineering
Introductory text : Electrical Engineering Sub -community contains educational resources of Electrical Domain.

Fill the Community's metadata as shown here.
Point to Logo For this demonstration, I will skip uploading a logo for the Sub-community.
click on the Create button Once the Community metadata is entered, click on the Create button at the bottom of the page.
Point to Community home page The Sub-community is created and the Sub-community home page is displayed.
Narration only This means that we have successfully created a Sub-community.
Logout from DSpace Let us logout this user from the DSpace interface now.
