Slide 1 Welcome to the Spoken tutorial on “Connecting SBHS to Computer”.

We would call Single Board Heater System as SBHS in this tutorial.

Slide 2 In this spoken tutorial we will learn:

  1. To set up physical communication between SBHS and computer
  2. To install USB driver.

Slide 3 To work with SBHS, we would require:

SBHS with power cable and USB/RS232 communication cable.

Slide 4

On a windows machine, we would also require

FTDI Virtual Com Port USB driver corresponding to the OS on your PC

You may download it from :

www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

Let me show you this website

Show www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm On this web site, scroll down and choose the driver file corresponding to your OS.

I have downloaded 32 bit 2.08.14 driver file for Windows

Slide 5 The single board heater system and your computer can be connected using a USB cable or RS232 cable.

Identify the corresponding ports on your computer and SBHS.

Slide 6 Here is an image of the USB port you will find on the back panel of your computer.
Slide 7 A Serial port on the computer back panel

Slide 8 USB and Serial port on the SBHS

Please note that before deciding to use the RS232 cable, confirm the availability of RS232 port on your computer.

After you choose between USB and RS232, you have to do some corresponding jumper settings.

A jumper is just a small black color connector.

Slide 9 A pair of these is shown here.

Each jumper can connect two terminals

Slide 10 The connectors on SBHS with both the jumpers removed is as shown in the figure.

Here we can see that there are three terminals on the either side.

We can also see the labels USB and RS232 being printed besides these connectors on the PCB.

The center terminal on either side is common terminal.

Take a jumper and connect the common terminal of one side and the terminal closer to the label USB of the same side.

Take another jumper and do the same thing for the other side.

This is how you set the jumpers to choose the USB port for communication

Similarly one can put both the jumpers on common terminal and the terminal towards the label RS232 to choose the RS232 port for communication

Slide 11 I have configured the jumper settings to choose USB port as shown.
Slide 12 After the jumper setting is done, connect power cable to a 3 pin AC 230 Volt house hold socket and the SBHS

Switch the mains power ON.

There may or may not be an ON/OFF switch on the SMPS of

the SBHS, besides the power cabel connector

If the device is succesfully powerd, the display should turn ON

Slide 13 Here is an image of the SBHS display.

Note that what is actually seen on the display may vary from what is shown. But it should certainly not be blank.

Slide 14 After powering ON the SBHS, connect the appropriate USB/RS232 cabel to the SBHS and the computer.

Here is an illustration for USB connection.

Slide 15 Always make sure that you
  1. First Power ON the device and
  2. Then connect the USB/RS232 cable.

Slide 16

Next we will see driver installation

Recall that the FTDI VCP USB driver was downloaded earlier from ftdichip.com

You can also find here a guide for driver installation.

Download the guide from www.ftdichip.com

Go to www.ftdichip.com Let us go to this website.

  1. In the left panel, Click on “Drivers”
  2. In the dropdown menu, choose “VCP Drivers”
  3. Click on “Installation Guides” link on the web page
  4. Choose required OS document

Show the PDF document

Page 1, 6, 7, 9

Since I am using Windows 7 OS, I have refered to “Windows 7 Installation Guide”.

You may choose the OS Guide according to your requirment .

This guide has detailed step by step instructions for driver installation.

Let me show you the Windows 7 guide PDF file.

Follow the steps as explained in the guide and install the driver.

The typical steps involved are

  1. Opening the device manager
  2. Locating the USB port
  3. Putting the driver path
  4. Repeating the steps once more

Once the driver is successfully installed,

  1. Your device should get listed under COM & LPT
  2. Your device should get a COM number.

Slide 17 Let us summarise what we learnt in this tutorial:

  1. Connect SBHS and computer.
    This involves:
    • Choosing RS232/USB port
    • Jumper settings
    • Powering ON the SBHS
  2. Install USB driverThis involves:
    • Downloading installation guide
    • Following the guide and installing the driver

Slide 18
  1. Watch the video available at http://spoken-tutorial.org/What_is_a_Spoken_Tutorial.
  2. It summarises the Spoken Tutorial project.
  3. If you do not have good bandwidth, you can download and watch it
