Open Inkscape | Here, I have already opened the Inkscape interface. |
File >> Document Properties >> Orientation >>
Select the Landscape Orientation
|
Let us go to File and click on Document Properties.
|
File >> Import >> Select file to import >> Desktop >>
Select the file >> Click on Open |
Go to File and click on Import.
|
Jpeg image bitmap import window opens.
|
Png bitmap image import window opens.
|
Go to the Layers panel.
>> Double click on the selected Layer>> Rename the name as ‘Reference’ |
Let’s go to the Layers panel.
|
Canvas>> Adjust the image>>Edit Duplicate>>
Canvas>>move the duplicated reference image outside the Canvas |
Adjust the image on the Canvas.
|
Layers panel>> Click on lock icon | The reference image must be retained as a reference as long as you work.
Click the lock icon to lock the reference image layer. |
Layers panel>> Create a new layer | In the Layers panel, create a new layer and name it as ‘Face’.
Click on the Add button.

Please remember to make a separate layer for each part of the drawing.
For example Face, Eye-Left, Eye-Right, Neck, Hair etc. |
Layers panel>>Select face layer >> Canvas>>
Draw a Face>>Fill>> decrease the Opacity>> Canvas. |
Let’s go to the Layers panel and select the Face layer.

Toolbar >> Select the Bezier tool>> Canvas >> Draw a white part of the eye, eyelashes and eyelid using the Bezier tool. |
Go to the Layers panel.
Click on the Add button.

Go to File>>Click on Save>>
|
Let us now save the file.
|
Layers panel>> Create a new layer>>Toolbar
>> Select the Bezier tool>> Canvas >> Draw a white part of the eye, eyelashes and eyelid using the Bezier tool.
|
Similarly, create the Eye-right layer.
|
Layers panel>> Create a new layer>>
Toolbar >> Select the Bezier tool>> draw lips, teeth, nose, nostrils, eyebrows, neck, hair, coat and cap.
|
Let’s go to the Layers panel.
Create a new layer and name it as ‘Lips’. Click on the Add button.
Arrange the layers from the Layers panel as shown. |
Canvas >> Point to the illustration>>
Layers panel>> hide the duplicated reference image by clicking on the eye icon of the reference image layer. |
The vector portrait illustration of the photo is completed.
Portrait coloring and detailing will be covered in the upcoming tutorials.
