I have opened a new Draw file.
We will name the file as Import-Export-Images and save it on the Desktop. |
Only narration | In Draw we can import and export both vector and bitmap images. |
Go to the Desktop and open the converted WaterCycle.jpg file on the desktop. | For this tutorial, I have created a JPG file of the WaterCycle drawing.
I have saved the image on the Desktop. The same file is given in the Code files link for practice. |
Point to the image on the Desktop. | Let us import this image into our Draw file. |
Standard toolbar >> Insert Image icon | To do so, click on the Insert Image icon on the Standard toolbar. |
Insert Picture dialog box appears | The Insert Image dialog box appears. |
Select WaterCycle.jpeg | Go to the folder where the WaterCycle.jpg file is saved and select it . |
Point to Open but don’t click. | If we click the Open button, the image will get embedded into the Draw page.
But we will not do so. |
Click Insert as Link check-box at the bottom left of the window.

Instead, we’ll click on the Insert as Link check-box.
On the Windows 10 interface, you will see it as Link check box.

Click Open | Then click on the Open button. |
Confirm Linked Graphic' dialog box opens up | A confirmation box pops up asking us to choose Embed Graphic or Keep Link. |
In the box, Click Keep Link | We will click on the Keep Link button. |
Point to the image. | The image gets inserted as a link on the Draw page. |
Only narration | Links can also be removed easily. |
Main menu >> select Edit >> click Links to External Files | To do so, go to the Edit menu and click Links to External Files. |
Edit Links dialog box appears. | The Edit Links dialog box opens up.
This dialog box lists all the links in this Draw file. |
Select the link of the picture WaterCycle | Click on the link for the WaterCycle image. |
Click Break Link. | At the bottom of the Edit links dialog box, click on Break Link button. |
In the confirmation message
Click Yes. |
A confirmation box asks us to confirm our action to remove the selected link.
Click the Yes button. |
The Link is removed.
Click Close. |
The link is removed.
Now, click on the Close button to close the dialog box. |
Point to the image. | But we can still see the image on the Draw page!
When you break a link, the image is automatically embedded in the Draw page. |
Select the image
Click the delete key on the keyboard. |
Let’s delete this image now.
So select the image and press the Delete key on the keyboard. <PAUSE> |
Drag and drop WaterCycle diagram from Desktop | We can also insert an image by the drag and drop method onto the Draw page. |
Go to Desktop >> drag-and-drop the image file on the Draw page. | Go to the folder where the image is saved.
Drag and drop it onto the Draw page. |
Press Ctrl + Z keys to undo the process. | Let’s undo the changes by pressing Ctrl and Z keys together. |

Go to the View menu and select Toolbars.
From the submenu select the Image option |
Alternatively, you can also use the Image toolbar to edit the images. |

Point to WaterCycle.jpeg on the Desktop | Did you wonder how we converted the WaterCycle diagram to the JPG format?
Let me demonstrate how it was done. |
Go to the Desktop folder | Go to the folder where the WaterCycle.odg file is saved. |
Open the file WaterCycle. | Open the file WaterCycle.odg file. |
Point towards the Export icon and click it | Click on the Export icon on the Standard toolbar. |
From the Main menu, click File >> Export | Alternatively, click on the File menu and select Export. |
Export dialog box appears. | The Export dialog box appears. |
Name >> Enter the name WaterCycle diagram | Let us enter the name WaterCycle-diagram in the Name field. |
Select Desktop as save location. | Select Desktop as the location to save the file. |
In the File type field select the option JPEG.
Show other options. |
In the File type drop-down, select the JPEG option. |
Check the Selection check box. | In the bottom left of the Export dialog box, click the Selection check-box. |
Click on the Save button. | Then click on the Save button. |

The JPG Options dialog box appears.
In your case JPEG Options dialog box may appear. It is same as JPG. Let’s keep the default options that are selected in this dialog box as they are. |
Click OK. | Now, click the OK button in the box. |
Go to the desktop, point to the saved file. | WaterCycle diagram is saved as a JPG file on the Desktop. |
Double click and open it.
Then close it. |
Here only one page from the Draw file is converted to JPG file. |
Switch back to the Import-Export-images file in Draw | Let us export the file Import-Export-images to PDF file format. |
Main menu >> File >> Export as>> Export as PDF | From the main menu, select File and click Export As.
Then select Export as PDF. |
PDF options dialog box appears. | The PDF options dialog box appears. |
Images >> select “JPEG compression” | In the General tab under “Images”, select “JPEG compression”.
This is the most common format that is used for compression. |
In PDF options dialog box >> Click “Security” tab. | Now, let’s assign a password to protect the PDF document.
To do so, click on the “Security” tab. |
Click Set Passwords. | Then click on the Set passwords button.
The Set passwords dialog box appears. |
In the field Password
Type the password “protect101”. |
Under Set open password in the “Password” field, type a password.
I will type the password as protect101. |
In the “Confirm” field, re-enter the password “protect101”. | In the “Confirm” field, retype the same password. |
Only narration | Next, let’s set the permission password to print or modify the document. |
In the field Password
Type the password “protect101”. |
Under Set permission password in the Password field, type a password.
I will type “protect101”. |
In the field “Confirm”, re-enter the password “protect101”.
Click OK. |
In the “Confirm” field, retype the password.
Then click on the OK button in the dialog box. |

Point to Under Printing >> “Not Permitted”. | Under “Printing”, select the option “Not Permitted” if not already selected. |
