Cursor on Ubuntu Desktop. | Let us open the Marble application in Ubuntu Linux OS. |
Click on Dash Home. | Click on Dash Home. |
In the Search bar type Marble.
Point to Marble icon. |
In the Search bar, type Marble.
Marble icon is seen. |
Double-click on Marble icon. | Double-click on it to open the Marble application. |
Let us open the Marble application in Windows 10 OS. | |
In the Search bar, type Marble.
Point to Marble icon. Click on it. |
In the Search bar, type Marble.
Marble icon appears in the list. Click on it, to open the Marble application. |
Cursor on Marble Virtual Globe interface. | This is the interface of Marble Virtual Globe. |
Point to left panel and topographical map of earth. | Interface has two sections, left panel and topographical map of earth. |
Point to Overview map. | On the top left corner of the map we can see an Overview Map of the globe. |

Observe that the Overview Map has a small white circle.
This circle depicts a particular location on the globe. |
Rotate the globe. | Now I will rotate the globe.
As I rotate, observe the changes in the position of the circle on the overview map. |
Point to Scale bar at the bottom left corner. | At the bottom left corner of the map we have a Scale bar. |
Point to the Scale bar. | Scale bar shows the ratio between actual distance and distance shown on the map. |
Point to compass on the top right corner. | On the top right corner of the topographical map we can see a compass. |
Shows four directions on the compass. | It shows the four directions – north, south, east and west. |
Drag the Overview map, Scale bar and Compass and show position change. | As per our convenience we can change the location of Overview map, Scale bar and Compass. |
Point to white circle on the right side of the globe ie windrose and 4 arrows. | On the right side of the map, we see a white circular tool named as windrose.
It has 4 arrow buttons. This tool is used for navigation on the globe. |
Click on up and down arrow buttons of the wind rose. | I will click on the up and down arrow buttons of the windrose.
Observe that earth rotates on its axis back and forth. |
Click on Left and right arrow buttons of the wind rose.
Globe rotates around its physical axis. |
Next I will click on the left and right arrow buttons of the windrose.
On clicking these arrow buttons, the earth spins around its physical axis. |
Press Up and down arrow key of the keyboard. | The arrow keys on the keyboard allow us to change the directions on the globe. |
Shows changes in direction in the globe. | As I press the arrow keys, notice the changes in direction of the globe. |
Point to the Home button below the wind-rose.
Click on Home to reset the globe. |
Below the windrose we have a Home button.
This button resets the globe to its original position. |
Point to vertical slider. | Next we have a vertical Zoom slider. |
Point to the + and – buttons. | On the slider, plus(+) button is for zoom in and minus (-) is for zoom out. |
Click on plus(+) or minus (-) buttons. | Click on plus(+) or minus (-) buttons or drag the slider to zoom the globe as required. |
Scroll mouse wheel. | We can also scroll the mouse wheel to zoom in or zoom out. |
Scroll the mouse wheel. | Notice the changes on the size of map, as I scroll the mouse wheel. |
Drag the zoom slider or click Zoom in(+) button to show India map clearly. | Let us drag the zoom slider to see the map of India clearly. |
Scroll the mouse wheel or drag the zoom slider. | I will zoom out to get the previous location on the map. |
Point towards bottom left corner.
Point to show Position, Altitude, date and time. |
At the bottom of the window we see a Status bar.
The Status bar shows Position, Altitude, date and time of a particular location. |
Cursor on the interface. | Next we will look at the menu bar of Marble. |

Show each menu item. |
Menu bar has standard menu items like,
File, Edit, View, Bookmarks, Settings and Help. |
Show short-cut keys of the File menu.

Notice that short-cut keys are available for some of the sub-menus.
For example, short-cut key to open a file is Ctrl O. Short-cut key to Download Maps is Ctrl N. These short-cut keys are called Command tabs. |

Show Open, Print, Copy map icons. |
Below the menu bar, we can see a toolbar.
It has Open, Print and Copy map icons. |
Cursor on the interface. | Now I will demonstrate how to set a default home location. |
Point India on the globe. | I am taking India, as my default home location. |
Go to Bookmarks menu >> select Set Home Location. | To set the Home location, go to Bookmarks menu and select Set Home Location.
We can also use the Home button on the keyboard to set the Home location. |
Point to Mumbai on the map. | Now we will set a bookmark for Mumbai on the map.
Locate the position of Mumbai on the map. |
Go to Bookmarks menu.
Select Add Bookmarks option. Point on Edit Bookmarks- Marble dialog box which appears on the screen. |
Go to Bookmarks menu and select Add Bookmark option.
Edit Bookmark- Marble dialog box appears on the screen. |
In the Description field field, type the name as Mumbai.
Click on OK button. |
In the Description field, type the name as Mumbai, India.
Click on OK button. |
Cursor on the Bookmark created for the location Mumbai. | A bookmark for the location of Mumbai has been saved with latitude and longitude.
I will zoom out to get the previous location on the map. |
Cursor on the interface. | Let us check whether our Home location is set properly or not. |
Close the application by click on x button | So, I will close the Marble application by clicking on (x) cross button. |
Click on Dash Home >> Click on Marble icon. | Now I will reopen Marble application using the Dash Home. |
Point to the view location. | Notice that, the interface has opened with the same view as we closed earlier. |
