00:01 | Welcome to the spoken tutorial on simulating a Shortcut distillation column in DWSIM. |
00:06 | I am Kannan Moudgalya. |
00:08 | In this tutorial, we will simulate a Shortcut distillation column. |
00:13 | We will learn: to calculate:
Minimum number of stages, Minimum reflux ratio, Optimal Feed stage location, Condenser and reboiler heat duty |
00:23 | to achieve a particular product specification. |
00:26 | To record this tutorial, I am using DWSIM 3.4. |
00:30 | To practice this tutorial, you should know: |
00:32 | How to add components to a flowsheet |
00:35 | How to select thermodynamic packages |
00:37 | How to add material streams and specify their properties. |
00:41 | The prerequisite tutorials are mentioned on our website: spoken-tutorial.org. |
00:47 | In the next two slides, we give specifications for the distillation problem. |
00:55 | This problem statement is given by Prof. Bill Luyben of Lehigh University. |
01:00 | I have already opened DWSIM. |
01:03 | Click on System of Units menu. |
01:07 | Select Custom 1. |
01:10 | This allows us to customize units which we will do next. |
01:14 | Let us click on Configure Simulation button. |
01:18 | Add Benzene from the ChemSep Database. |
01:27 | Next Toluene. |
01:33 | We will next click Thermodynamics and then Property Packages. |
01:40 | Scroll down and select Raoult’s Law. |
01:44 | Below the Thermodynamics option, you see Options menu. Click this. |
01:49 | Click Units System. |
01:53 | Let me bring this inside. |
01:56 | Pressure menu appears at the top of this list. |
01:58 | Click and choose atm for atmosphere. |
02:04 | Below the Pressure menu is the Molar flow rate menu. |
02:08 | Click it and select kmol/per hour. |
02:13 | Click on Back to simulation. |
02:15 | Let us insert a feed stream that has to be distilled. |
02:21 | Enter 0.4 for benzene and 0.6 for toluene. |
02:29 | Apply and Close. |
02:32 | We will change the name of this stream to Feed. |
02:39 | Click on Properties. Scroll to the top. |
02:43 | Click on Specification. |
02:46 | Choose Pressure and Vapor Fraction. |
02:50 | Locate the Molar flow rate option. |
02:53 | It has the units of kmol/per hour. |
02:57 | Click on this field. Enter 100. |
03:02 | Locate Molar Fraction (Vapor Phase). |
03:08 | The default value is 0. |
03:10 | This indicates saturated liquid. |
03:13 | Let us leave it as it is. |
03:16 | Let us insert a Shortcut column to the flowsheet. |
03:20 | Locate it from the Object palette. |
03:23 | The Shortcut Column is based on Fenske-Underwood-Gilliland method. |
03:27 | Click on it and drag it to the flowsheet. |
03:32 | Let us arrange it. |
03:34 | Now, let us insert two output streams. |
03:37 | One will be distillate, the other is Bottoms. |
03:41 | To do that, let us drag two material streams. |
03:46 | As they are output streams, we will leave them unspecified. |
03:56 | We will change the name of these streams to Distillate and Bottoms. |
04:05 | Let us now insert two Energy streams for Condenser duty and Reboiler duty. |
04:17 | Name these streams as C-Duty and R-Duty. |
04:24 | We are now ready to specify the Shortcut distillation column. |
04:27 | Click on it and select it. |
04:30 | Go to the Selected Object window. |
04:32 | Under theProperties tab, locate Connections menu. |
04:37 | The first option is Feed. Let me click on Feed menu. A down arrow appears indicating a menu. |
04:44 | Click this arrow. Here we choose Feed. |
04:48 | Now, click on the next option which says Distillate. |
04:51 | Click on the drop-down arrow and select Distillate. |
04:56 | Similarly, for Bottoms, choose Bottoms. |
04:59 | The next option is Condenser Duty. |
05:02 | Let me click on it and select C-Duty. |
05:07 | Similarly, choose R-Duty for Reboiler. |
05:12 | This completes the connectivity of the flowsheet. |
05:14 | Under Properties tab, locate Parameters section. |
05:19 | This section is used to specify various attributes of a Shortcut Column. |
05:25 | In this section, the first option is Condenser. |
05:30 | By default, it is Total Condenser. |
05:33 | If a partial condenser is required, you can change it here. |
05:36 | Here, we leave it as it is. |
05:39 | Let us enter the Reflux Ratio. Click on it. |
05:42 | Here, we enter the value 2 in the field next to it. |
05:49 | We will specify the Product composition. |
05:52 | Let us first specify light key details in bottoms. |
05:57 | To do this, let me click light key. |
06:01 | Click the arrow and choose Benzene. |
06:04 | In the given field, on the next row, enter 0.05. |
06:10 | Similarly, for heavy key, choose Toluene. |
06:15 | Now we specify the heavy key in Distillate. |
06:18 | We enter 0.05. |
06:23 | Next in the list is Condenser Pressure. |
06:26 | The default value is 0 atmosphere. We will change it to 1 atmosphere. |
06:32 | Similarly, let us change reboiler pressure to 1 atmosphere. |
06:37 | Now we will run the simulation. |
06:39 | To do this, go to the Calculator options. |
06:42 | Click on the Play button. Now, click on the Recalculate button. |
06:47 | When the calculations are completed, click on the Shortcut column. |
06:53 | Under Properties tab, locate Results menu. |
06:58 | This shows all the required results like: |
07:00 | Minimum Reflux Ratio |
07:03 | Minimum Number of Stages |
07:05 | Actual Number of Stages |
07:07 | Optimal Feed Stage etc. |
07:10 | I have tabulated these results in a slide. |
07:15 | Let me save this simulation. |
07:20 | I have saved this as shortcut end. |
07:24 | Let me summarize. |
07:26 | We learnt: * how to specify a shortcut distillation column |
07:29 | To specify key components, purities and minimum reflux ratio |
07:34 | To use custom units |
07:36 | To calculate- minimum reflux ratio, optimal feed location and total number of trays. |
07:43 | Let me give some assignments. The assignment in this slide has to do with mass balances. |
07:48 | I use blue colour to indicate streams and equipment. |
07:52 | Let us go to the next assignment. |
07:54 | Carry out energy balance as mentioned. |
07:58 | Repeat the simulation with different product purities. |
08:02 | Determine how the energy requirement changes. |
08:06 | Repeat this simulation with different thermodynamics. |
08:08 | Repeat this simulation with different feed conditions. |
08:12 | Try to reason your results. We have come to the end of this tutorial. |
08:16 | This video summarizes the Spoken Tutorial project. |
08:20 | If you do not have good bandwidth, you may download and watch it. |
