Welcome to the spoken tutorial on Create and Manage Tools.

In this tutorial we will learn to,
  • Customize the tool bar
  • Create a new tool
  • Manage the created tool and
  • Open a new GeoGebra window and check the created tool.

To record this tutorial, I am using;
  • Ubuntu Linux OS version 16.04
  • GeoGebra version 5.0438.0-d

Pre-requisites

To follow this tutorial, learner should be familiar with GeoGebra interface.

For the prerequisite GeoGebra tutorials, please visit this site.

Cursor on the interface. I have already opened the GeoGebra interface on my machine.
Right-click on the Graphics view >> un-check the Axes check box. For this tutorial I will un-check the axes.
Point to the toolbar. Now we will begin by customizing the tool bar.
Click on Tools menu and select Customize Toolbar.

Point to the window.

Click on Tools menu and select Customize Toolbar option.


The Customize Toolbar window opens.

Click on the drop-down.

Point to General view.

The window has a drop-down to choose different views.

By default, General view is selected.

Point to the Toolbar box.

Click and show one or more menu buttons to show the related tools.

The Toolbar box has a menu button next to each tool, to show the related tools.
Point to the buttons.

Click on Line tool.

Click the Up and Down buttons to move the tools.

Below the Toolbar box, we have the Up and Down arrow buttons.

I will select Line tool

These buttons are used to move the selected tool up or down the list.

Point to the button. At the bottom left, we have Restore Default Toolbar button, to restore the default toolbar.
Click on Restore Default Toolbar button. Click on Restore Default Toolbar button.
Point to Tools box. Next we have Tools box.

This is used to separate the tools from the Toolbar box.

Click on menu button next to Move to show the related tools. In the Toolbar box, click on the menu button next to Move to show the related tools.
Click on Move tool >> click on Remove button.


Point to Move tool in Tools box.

Click on Move tool and then click on the Remove button.

Notice that the Move tool has moved to the Tools box.

Click on menu button Click on the menu button to close the Move menu.
Click on menu button next to Perpendicular Line to show related tools. Next click on the menu button next to Perpendicular Line to show the related tools.
Click on Tangents tool >> click on Remove button.

Point to Tangents tool.

Now click on Tangents tool and then click on the Remove button.

Notice that Tangents tool has also moved to the Tools box.

Click on menu button Click on menu button to close the Perpendicular Line menu.
Point to Move and Tangents tools in Tools box. Let's separate these tools from their related tools.
Select Move tool >> click on Insert button. Select Move tool in the Tools box and click on Insert button.

The Move tool is inserted as a separate tool.

Select Tangents tool >> click on Insert button.

Point to the tool.

Next, select Tangents tool and click on the Insert button.

Tangents tool is also inserted as a separate tool.

Click on Apply button.


Click on Close button

Now click on Apply button to apply the changes.

Then click on the Close button to close the window.

Point to the tools on the toolbar. Notice that Move tool and Tangents tool are shown separately on the toolbar.

Cursor on Graphics view We will begin by drawing tangents to a circle.
Click on Circle with Centre and Radius tool >> Click in the Graphics view. Click on the Circle with Centre and Radius tool, click in Graphics view.
Point to Circle with Center and Radius text box Circle with Center and Radius text box opens.
In the Radius field, type 3 >> click on OK button.

In the Radius field, type 3 and click on OK button at the bottom.


A circle with centre A and radius 3 cm is drawn.

Drag the boundary of the Algebra view. Drag the boundary of the Algebra view to see the equation of the circle.

Click on Point tool >> click in the Graphics view . Now using Point tool we will mark an external point B on the Graphics view.
Click on Tangents tool.

Click point B >> on the circle c.

Then click point B and then on circle c.

Two tangents are drawn to the circle c from point B.

Click on Tools menu and select Create New Tool. Click on the Tools menu and select Create New Tool option.
Point to the dialog box. The Create New Tool dialog box opens.
Point to the tabs.

Point to the tab.

In the box we have Output Objects, Input Objects and Name & Icon tabs.

By default Output Objects tab opens.

Select objects in construction or choose from list drop-down. In the Output Objects tab, there is a drop-down to select objects.

Select Circle c: Circle with center A and radius 3

Line f: Tangent to c through B.

Line g: Tangent to c through B.

From the drop-down, select

Circle c with center A and radius 3

Line g: Tangent to c through B.

Click on Input Objects tab.


Cursor on Point A and Point B.

Next click on the Input Objects tab.


In this tab, Point A and Point B are already selected.

Click on Name & Icon tab.

Point to the tab.

Point to Tool name and Tool help.

Click on Name & Icon tab.

In this tab we can type the Tool name and Tool help.

In Tool name, type Tangents to a circle.

Point to the Command name.

For the Tool name I will type Tangents to a circle.

Observe that, as I type the Tool name, the Command name automatically gets filled.

In the Tool help box, type Click two points. In the Tool help box, I will type Click two points.
Point to the check-box. Observe that Show in Toolbarcheck-box is already checked.
Click on the Finish button. Lastly click on the Finish button.
Point to the message box.

Click on OK button.

Geogebra Info message box with a text New tool created successfully! appears.

Click on OK button to close this message box.

Point to the new tool on the toolbar. Observe that, a new tool Tangents to a circle is seen on the toolbar, with a tool tip.
Press Ctrl+A >> Press Delete key on the key board. Let's delete all the objects from the interface.
Point to the tool. Now let us use the tool that we have just created.
Click on Tangents to circle tool >> click two points in the Graphics view.

Point to the tool. We will now see how to manage the tool we have created.
Click on Tools menu >> select Manage Tools. Click on Tools menu and select Manage Tools option.
Point to the dialog box. The Manage Tools dialog box opens.
Point to the buttons in the dialog box. This dialog box has Delete, Open, Save As and Share buttons.
Click on Saves As button. We will save the Tangents to a circle tool.


Click on Saves As button.

Point to the dialog box.

In the File name text box type as Tangents to a circle.


Point to .ggt extension.

Save dialog box opens.

In the File name text box I will type Tangents hyphen circle(Tangents-circle).

Note that, in the Files of type, GeoGebra Tools(.ggt) is already selected.

Select Desktop. Select a location to save the file.

I will select Desktop.

Click Save button at the bottom. Then click Save button at the bottom.
Click on Close button to close the dialog box. And click on Close button to close the dialog box.
Click on File and select Close. Now I will close the Geogebra window.

I'll click on File and select Close.

Point to Close File box.

Select Don't Save button.

The Close File box opens.

It asks Do you want to save your changes?

In the box, I'll select Don't Save button as I have already saved the file.

Point to the saved file on the Desktop. Now we will open the saved file.

I had saved it on my Desktop as Tagents-circle.ggt.

Double click on file >> right-click, select Open With GeoGebra. We can open the file by double clicking on it.

Or right-click and select Open With GeoGebra option.

Cursor in the file.

Click on Dash Home >> type geogebra >> select Geogebra icon to open it.

Please note, the new tool that we have created will be available only in this file.


We don't see the tool we created, if we open a new GeoGebra window using Dash Home.

Point to the toolbar. You can check it for yourself, the new tool is not available in the new GeoGebra window.
