00:01 | Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on Creating Articles in Joomla. |
00:07 | In this tutorial, we will learn about :
Article Manager, create a new article, edit an article, make a copy of an article and delete an article. |
00:22 | For this tutorial, we will be using:
Ubuntu 14.04, Joomla 3.4.1, Apache, MySQL and PHP obtained through XAMPP 5.5.19. |
00:40 | To follow this tutorial, ensure that Joomla 3.4.1 is installed in your system. |
00:49 | Let's open Joomla administrative panel first. |
00:54 | So, go to the browser and type: http colon double slash localhost slash joomla slash administrator. |
01:08 | Press Enter. |
01:10 | Enter your User Name and password and click on Log in button. |
01:16 | I will enter my username as admin and password as admin123. |
01:25 | Click on Log in |
01:28 | We are now on the Joomla Control Panel. |
01:32 | We can see the Control Panel menu on the left-hand side of the screen. |
01:39 | Let's go to the Article Manager page. |
01:43 | There are 2 ways to reach the Article Manager page. |
01:47 | Click on Article Manager menu, in the Joomla Control Panel. |
01:53 | Or, click on Content in the top menu and then click on Article Manager. |
02:02 | Notice there are some buttons on the toolbar. |
02:07 | You can use these to create, modify and delete articles. |
02:13 | You can also archive, publish and unpublish them. |
02:19 | Let us now learn how to create an article. |
02:23 | There are 2 ways to create an article in Joomla, from the Article Manager page. |
02:30 | Click on the New button on the toolbar of the Article Manager page. |
02:36 | Or, click on Content in the top menu, then Article Manager and then the sub-menu Add New Article. |
02:47 | I will click on the New button in the toolbar on the top left. |
02:53 | We are now on the new article creation page. |
02:58 | This page has few buttons on the toolbar. |
03:03 | Values for a few fields are to be provided in the panel, below the page title. |
03:10 | Title and Category are the mandatory fields while creating an article. |
03:17 | These are indicated by the all too familiar black asterix. |
03:24 | Let's create an article now. |
03:27 | Type Sodium as the title of the article. |
03:32 | We will put some text into the text box: Article Text. |
03:37 | You can put any text of your choice here. |
03:41 | I will copy the text that I have in my Gedit text editor and paste it in the Article text. |
03:51 | Next, select the Category field on the right-hand side of the screen. |
03:57 | Default value of the field is Uncategorised. |
04:00 | Let's leave it as it is. |
04:04 | There is a field called Featured which is a toggle button, with options Yes and No. |
04:12 | A featured article is one which will be displayed on the homepage of a website. |
04:19 | I will select Yes in the Featured menu. |
04:24 | Let's now save and close the article. |
04:28 | Go to the toolbar at the top left corner of the page. |
04:33 | There are various save options here. |
04:37 | Out of the given options, I will click on Save & Close. |
04:43 | Save & Close option will save the article and take us back to the Article Manager. |
04:51 | Let's open our webpage and see the article we have created. |
04:57 | On the top right on the administrative panel, there is a link Digital India. Click on it. |
05:06 | This is the site name that we gave for the website, during installation of Joomla. |
05:14 | We are now on our homepage and you can see the article Sodium that we created on the homepage. |
05:24 | Let's close the browser window and go back to the administrative panel. |
05:30 | Now, let us learn to edit an existing article. |
05:34 | We will edit the article that we have just created. |
05:40 | Look for the article in the Article Manager and click on its title. |
05:47 | Right now, we have only one article. So, we will click on the article Sodium. |
05:54 | It opens the page with the title: Article Manager: Edit Article. |
06:01 | I am going to add a line at the beginning of the text: |
06:06 | Sodium is one of the essential minerals required by our body. |
06:12 | This time, let us choose another option to save the changes in the article. |
06:19 | Click on Save in the toolbar. |
06:24 | It will save the article and load the page with Edit Article |
06:30 | which indicates that, the article is still open for editing. |
06:35 | Let's go to the website and verify our changes. |
06:40 | Click on Digital India link on the top right of the page. |
06:45 | Scroll down to see that the article is edited. |
06:50 | Close the browser window and go back to the administrative panel. |
06:57 | To make a copy of an existing article, there is an option Save as Copy in the toolbar. |
07:06 | Let us try it. |
07:08 | Click on Save as Copy button. |
07:11 | This creates a new article which is a copy of our original one- Sodium. |
07:19 | Note that the system has generated a new title, Sodium (2), for the copied article. |
07:29 | Let us give the copied article a title of our choice. |
07:35 | In the Title textbox, type: Benefits of Sodium. |
07:43 | Now select the Status as Published. Then click on the Save & Close option in the toolbar. |
07:56 | We are back to the Article Manager page. |
08:00 | See here, we have got a new article named Benefits of Sodium in our list. |
08:09 | Go to the webpage and verify that we have 2 articles on the homepage. |
08:16 | Click on the Digital India link, on the top right. |
08:21 | Scroll down to see 2 articles: Sodium and Benefits of Sodium. |
08:29 | Here is a small assignment for you. |
08:32 | Pause this tutorial and do it. |
08:35 | Click on the title Benefits of Sodium. |
08:39 | Append XYZ at the end of the text. |
08:44 | This time, choose the last icon, Close, from the toolbar. |
08:50 | In the Article Manager, open Benefits of Sodium again. |
08:56 | Verify that, this time the changes were not saved. |
09:01 | Close the article by clicking on Close again. |
09:06 | Now go back to the administrative panel. |
09:10 | We will now see how to delete an article in Joomla. |
09:15 | Since we have two articles, Benefits of Sodium and Sodium, let us delete one of them. |
09:24 | First, click on the check box on the left of the article Sodium. |
09:31 | In the toolbar, click on the button: Trash. |
09:36 | In the Article Manager, verify that the article Sodium is no longer in the list. |
09:44 | The article has been permanently deleted. |
09:48 | Go to the webpage and verify again if the article is present. |
09:54 | Click on Digital India link on the top right. |
09:59 | See that we have only 1 article here - Benefits of Sodium. |
10:07 | Let us recap. In this tutorial, we learnt about :
