Spatial Data

Spatial Data is of two types- Vector Data and Raster Data.


Let us download vector dataset from Internet.

Open Firefox/Chrome web browser.

Type www.naturalearthdata.com

Open any web browser.


In the address bar, type http://www.naturalearthdata.com


Press Enter.

Click on Downloads link


Natural Earth data website opens.


Click on Downloads link.

Scroll down

Downloads page opens.


Scroll down the page.

Point towards the scales.

Point towards the details.

You can see three different scales of dataset.


Large, Medium and Small.

Under Large scale data >> Click on Cultural button


Scroll down

Let us download a dataset for demostration.


Under Large scale data, click on Cultural button.

Scroll down the webpage. A webpage opens.


Scroll down the page.


Here, we can see various available datasets.

Click on Download countries tab. Let us download the country administration boundary files.


Under heading Admin zero hyphen Countries, click on Download countries button.

Point to the dialog box.


Select Save file option.


Click on OK button.

A dialog-box opens, which prompts you to save the file.


Select Save file option.


Click on OK button.

Open Downloads folder and point the zip file. The process of download begins.


On my system, zip file downloads to the Downloads folder.

Right-click to extract the contents. Extract the contents of the zip file.


Right-click and select Extract Here option.

Double-click to open the folder

Point to all the files.

Double-click on the extracted folder.


Here we see many files with different file extensions.


This is a vector type of dataset.

Spatial Data-Vector Data

About Vector data.
  • Discrete features such as wells, roads and land-use types is Vector Data.
  • Vector data can be of point, line or polygon format.
Cursor on slide. Let us open QGIS and view one of the downloaded files.
Double-click on QGIS icon.

Cursor on the interface.

Here, I have already opened QGIS interface.
Click on layer on the menu bar.

Click on add layer.

Click on add vector layer.

Click on the Layer menu on the menu bar.


From the menu options, select Add Layer.


From the sub-menu, click on Add Vector Layer option.

Point to Add Vector Layer dialog-box .


Add Vector Layer dialog-box opens.


Select File as Source type and System as Encoding.

Click on Browse.


Locate the folder ne_10m_admin_0_countries.

Under Source heading, click on Browse button.


Navigate to the admin countries folder downloaded from the Natural Earth data website.

From the folder, select the file ne_10m_populated_countries.shp


Click Open.

From the contents of the folder, select the file with .shp extension.


Click on Open button.

Click Open in Add vector layer dialog-box.


Point to themap on canvas.

In the Add vector layer dialog-box, click on Open button.


A world map opens on the canvas.

Click on Project in the menu bar.


Scroll down click on Save.

Save the map.


Click on Project in the menu bar.


Scroll down, click on Save button.

In the File name text box, type Map-1.


Click on Save.


Point to Map-1.qgs on the Desktop.

In the dialog-box, name the file as Map hyphen 1.


I will save it on the Desktop.


Click on Save button.


The map will be saved as Map hyphen 1 dot qgs on the Desktop.

Spatial Data - Raster Data

About Raster Data.
  • Continuous features that exist spatially between observations is Raster Data.
  • Raster data is made up of cells in row and column format.

Bhuvan Platform was created by ISRO.


The website hosts various data collected by Indian remote sensing satellites.


Here is the link to download raster dataset from Bhuvan website.

Show the Address bar. Open the Bhuvan website link in any web browser.

Open Data Archive page opens.

Point to Select Category>> Satellite/Sensor radio button. On the left panel under Select Category, select Satellite/Sensor option.
Select Resourcesat-1: LISS-3.


Point to the India map highlighted in yellow tiles.

Under Select Subcategory drop down, choose Resourcesat-1: LISS-III option.


Scroll down, under Select Area, choose Bounding Box .


Here, we have to enter the latitude and longitude of the location.

Cursor on Select Area panel, Bounding Box tab . Let us download data for Mumbai region.


Use google maps to find the latitude and longitude of a particular region.

Type Min longitude 72.75 E

Type Max longitude 73 E

Type Min latitude 19 N

Type Max latitude 19.25 N

Click select

For Mumbai region, enter the following data.


Min Longitude 72.75

Max Longitude 73

Min Latitude 19

Max Latitude 19.25


Click on Select button.

Point to the highlighted tile. A tile over Mumbai will be highlighted.
Click Next button.


Cursor on the list of Tiles.

Click on Next button at the bottom of the page.


A list of available Tiles opens.

Point on Date of Pass column.


Select the most recent imagery by looking into the Date of Pass column.


24Dec15 is the most recent out of the available datasets.

Click on the check box.


Click Download button.

Click on the check box on this row under Selection for backlog.


Click on Download button on this row.

Click on OK. Bhuvan will prompt you to login.

Click on OK button.

A dialog-box opens.
Click on New User. If it is your first time in using Bhuvan, click on New User link to create a new account.
Point to Account and Profile Information page.


Account and Profile Information page opens.


Fill the appropriate details as shown.

Click on Submit button.


You will receive an email from the Bhuvan team with Login Id and Password.

Enter username

Enter password

Click Login

I have already completed the registration process.


So I will click on Click here to login link.


I will enter Username and Password and click on Login button.

Click Download from the list of available Tiles against 24Dec15 Again, in the tiles panel for 24Dec15 row, click on the Download button.
Point to download dialog-box. Download of the zip file begins.


A dialog-box opens, which prompts you to save the file.

Select Save File radio button >> click OK.


Point to the files in the folder.

Select Save File option and click on OK button.


The zip file will be saved to the Downloads folder.

Right-click on the folder and select Extract Here option.


Double click on the extacted folder.


Point on the files in the folder.

Extract the contents of the zip file.


Double click on the extacted folder.


This folder has raster dataset for Mumbai region.

On the QGIS window,

Click on New icon on the tool bar.

Let us now open a file in QGIS.


Open a new window.


Click on New icon in the top-left corner on the tool bar.

Click on Layer>> Add Layer>>Add Raster Layer Click on Layer on the menu bar.


From the menu options, select Add Layer.


From the sub-menu, click on Add Raster Layer option.

Open GDL Supported Raster Data Source dialog-box opens.


A dialog-box opens.


Navigate to the folder we had downloaded from Bhuvan website.

Select the file, L3-NE43A16-094-059-24Dec15-BAND2.tif


Click on Open.

Select the file 24December15 hyphen BAND2 dot tif


Click on Open button.

Point to the image on QGIS window. On QGIS canvas, you will see the raster map of Mumbai region.
