Benefits of GChemPaint |
GChemPaint helps in
| |
Let's first see how to open a new GChemPaint Application.
Click on Dash home >> Search bar appears>>In the Search bar type GChemPaint |
Click on Dash home. Search bar appears. In the Search bar, type GChemPaint Click on the GChemPaint application
We can also open GChemPaint Application from Terminal.
Press CTRL+ALT+T >> open the terminal | Press CTRL, ATL and T keys simultaneously to open the Terminal.
Type GChemPaint >>press Enter to open Type GChemPaint and press Enter. GChemPaint Application opens.
Show the Gchempaint window | This is a typical GChemPaint window.
Menubar | GChempaint has a standard menu-bar like other window based applications.
Point to the options as per the narration | Menu bar contain menu items like File, Edit, View, Tools, Windows and Help options
Point to Toolbar, New icon, Open icon, Save icon, Print icon | Toolbar contains most frequently used commands as icons.
There are icons to open a New file, Open existing file, Save a file and Print a file.
Show Display area | This is the Display area.
Display area shows the structures and the contents of the file that we draw and edit. We can drag and drop tools from toolbox into the display area.
Point to Statusbar | Statusbar displays information about current GChemPaint activity.
It also displays contextual information about the menu items.
Now I will explain about Document Properties.
Document Properties
Click on File menu>>Navigate to Properties>>Click on Document Properties |
To open Document Properties window, click on File menu.
Navigate to Properties and click on it. Document Properties opens.
Show Document properties window | Document properties window has the following fields.
Show Title | Title- Let's type title of the document as “propane”
Show Author's Name | Author's Name- let's type the author's name as 'Madhuri'.
ShowEmail | Email– Let's leave it blank.
Show History | History – This field shows the creation date of the document.
It also shows the Revision date of the document. This means, it also shows the next edited dated of the document.
Show Theme | Theme- let's leave this field as “GChemPaint”
Show Comments | Comments- In the Comments field, we can add text related to the document.
Let's enter name of the compound and its formula propane CH3-CH2-CH3
Click on Close button | Let's click on Close button to close the window.
Let's next learn about Toolbox.
Tool box | Toolbox contains buttons for different tools.
Toolbox is displayed along with the active document window.
Draw the structures | Let's now draw structures using toolbox buttons.
Let's first draw the structure of propane. Propane is CH3-CH2-CH3
Point to “Add Chain” tool | Let's use Add a Chain tool from Tool box to draw a carbon chain.
Click on Add a Chain>> Display | Click on Add a Chain tool then on the Display area.
The Carbon chain is a drawn on the display area.
Change orientation of Chain | To change the orientation of the chain, click on the Add a Chain tool.
Display area>>click and hold the left mouse button | In the Display area, click and hold the left mouse button to change the orientation.
Do not release left mouse button | Do not release left mouse button until the direction of the chain is fixed.
Release the left mouse button | Release the left mouse button after fixing the direction.
We see that carbon chain is drawn.
Note once we click on the Display area, chain length and orientation of the chain are fixed.
Display Atoms. | Let's now display atoms on each position in the chain.
Here we have 3 positions to display atoms.
Right click on first chain position | Right click on first chain position, a submenu opens.
Select Atoms >> click on Display | Select Atoms then click on Display area, to display atoms at that position of the chain.
Like wise, let's display atoms at all positions of the chain.
Here the structure of “Propane” is drawn
Pentane structure | Let's next draw a pentane structure on the same window.
Click on Add a Chain>> Display | Click on the Add a Chain tool, then click on the Display area.
hold the left mouse button and drag the cursor. To increase the chain length, hold the left mouse button and drag the cursor. Change orientation >>release the left mouse button Change orientation in the desired direction and release the left mouse button. Let's display atoms on all positions. Here we have 5 positions to display the atoms. To display atoms on first position, right click on the position.
Select Atoms click on Display symbols to display the atoms at that position Like wise I will display atoms at all positions. Here the structure of pentane is drawn. Click on File>> Save As Let now save the file. Go to File Menu select Save as . Save As dialog box opens. Click on File type drop down For File type, click on the drop down arrow. Various save formats are seen. Select 2D Chemical structure Select 2D Chemical structure In filename type propane.gchempaint>> click Save Type the file name as propane.gchempaint click on Save button. File is saved with .gchempaint extension. With this, we have come to the end of this tutorial. Let's summarise. Slide Number 9 Summary In this tutorial we have learnt, About GChemPaint Uses and Benefits Installation Open a new file Menubar, Toolbar and Status bar We have also learnt Display area Document Properties Using tool box Save the drawing with extension .gchempaint Slide Number 10 Assignment As an assignment I would like you to Draw structures of n-hexane and n-octane Change the orientation Display atoms on each position Output of assignment should look like this.
