Features of Industrial drawing

Industrial drawing is a graphical language.

It gives information about dimensions, tolerances, and geometries of an object.

Flange Coupling.

It is a mechanical device that connects two shafts or pipes together.

It transmits power or flow of substance from one shaft to another.

Industrial Drawing

Show the image of the Drawing

We will now draw this industrial drawing.
Open the FreeCAD.

Select File and New to open the new file

Click on Start dropdown.

Select the Draft workbench from the drop down.

Let us open FreeCAD.

Click on File and select New.

I have selected the Draft workbench.

Using the Gizmo select -

Select the Top view.

Orthographic view.


Select Top view and Orthographic view using the Gizmo.
Enable all the Draft snap tools.

Cursor on the Draft snap tools.

Please ensure that Snap Center point and Snap Endpoint tools are enabled.
Select the Circle tool.

In the Combo View click Continue check box.

Uncheck Filled checkbox if it is checked for you.

Select the Circle tool from the tool bar.

In the Combo View check the Continue check box.

Uncheck Filled checkbox if it is checked for you.

In the Radius field type 50 and press Enter. Let us draw a circle of radius 50 millmetres.
Please do not click on the centre point.

Click on the circumference to select the centre point

Drag to see the radius.

Let us continue to draw concentric circles using the same centre.

Place the cursor on the circumference.

It is highlighted in yellow colour and white coloured centre point is visible.

Now click on the circumference and drag to see the radius.

In the Radius field type 43 mm and press Enter. In the Radius field change the radius to 43 millimetres.
In the Radius field type 28.8 mm and press Enter.

Radius 22.3 mm

Radius 21 mm

Radius 18 mm

Radius 10 mm

Now let us draw the third circle with radius 28.8 millimetres.

I will continue to draw circles using the same center point.

The radii of the circles are 22.3 millimetres, 21 millimetres, 18 millimetres and 10 millimetres respectively.

Click on Close button in the Combo View. Click on Close button in the Combo View.
Point to the centre.

Click on the Line tool.

Point to the snap end point tool.

Click on Close button in the Combo View.

I will now draw a line from the centre of the circle to the outermost circle.

Click on the Line tool

For this please enable the Snap Endpoint tool.

Click on Close button in the Combo View.

Select the drawn line >>

Click on the Draft snap toolbar.

Click on the Polar array from the drop-down of Array tools.

(Array tools drop down, blue coloured 6 rectangles with a drop down)

Point to the Polar array menu in the Combo View.

Select the line tool.

In the Draft snap toolbar, click on Polar Array from the Array dropdown.

The Polar Array menu opens in the Combo View.

In the Number of elements field choose 4 .

Click the outer circle circumference to select the centre.

In the Number of elements field choose 4 .

Click on the circumference in order to see the centre of the circle.

Now we see four lines dividing the circles into four parts.

Press Ctrl + left Click to select the lines Press Ctrl key and left click on the lines to select them.
In the Property tab

Click on Object Style- change the Draw Style to Dashdot.

Point to the lines.

In the Property tab change the draw style from Solid to Dashdot.

Notice that the lines change from solid format to dashdot format.

Point to the second largest circle from outside.

Change the radius value to 4 mm in the Radius field.

Let’s draw a circle of radius 4 mm at the intersection of the line and second circle.

Let us change its radius to 4 mm in the radius field.

Click on the Close button to close the Circle tool.

Click on the drawn circle.

Click on the Polar array from the toolbar.

Point to the Polar array menu in the Combo View.

In the Number of elements field choose 8 .

Click the circle circumference to select the centre.

Click on the drawn circle.

Click on the Polar array from the toolbar.

Let us change the number of elements to 8.


Click the circumference of this circle to ensure the centre.

Point to the circles. Observe that eight circles are drawn at a 45 degree interval with center point.
Press Ctrl + click to select all the drawings. Let us select circles of the drawing.

Press and hold the Ctrl key and click on all the circles one by one.

In the Property tab

Under Object Style change Angular Deviation from 28 to 1

Change Deviation 0.5 to 0.1

Press Enter to apply the changes.

In the Property tab change the Angular deflection from 28 to 1 degree.

And change Deviation from 0.5 to 0.1.

Press Enter to apply the changes.

Point to the drawing. This is done to get perfect circularity in the drawing.
Click on File and select Save.

Save FreeCAD window opens.

In the File name field type the filename as Industrialdrawing.

Click on Save button.

Now let us save the file.

Save the file in your convenient location.

Type the filename as Industrialdrawing and click on Save button.

Click on the arrow drop-down and select TechDraw workbench. Now let us change the workbench from Draft to TechDraw.
On the TechDraw Pages toolbar.

Click on Insert Page using Template tool on the toolbar.(red-coloured box shaped icon with a golden start on it)

Point to the Select Template File Window.

Click the Open button to load the selected template.

Click on Insert Page using Template tool on the toolbar.

Select a Template File window opens.

In this window you can select the drawing templates as per your choice.

Click the Open button to load the selected template.

Point to the table. You can see a table at the bottom right corner.

In this table you can observe the green coloured editable text fields.

Details can be changed by double clicking the fields.

Double click on the Author name text box

Change the Author name/ Designed by name to Spokentutorial and click the OK button.

Point to the named pages at the bottom.

Details can be changed by double clicking on the fields.

Here I will change the Designed by name to Spokentutorial.

The new tab named page appears at the bottom of the window.

Click on Insert Default Page tool( the icon is seen as 3 circles and one box) You can also insert the default page by clicking the Insert default Page icon.
Press Ctrl + A. Now go back to the drawing.

Press Ctrl and A keys to select all the draft components.

Click Insert projection option on the toolbar.(box icon with three yellow dots) Click the Insert projection Group icon on the toolbar.

If this tool is not seen, drag and arrange toolbars to see all the tools.

Point to the Page Chooser window.

Select the appropriate page and Click on OK button.

Page Chooser window opens.

Select the appropriate page and click on OK button.

Sometimes the Page Chooser window may not open.

The diagram loads automatically on the page.

Point to the Projection Group menu in the Combo View. The Projection Group menu opens in the Combo View.

You can change the projection type to First angle or Third angle.

Click the OK button to make the changes.

Click and drag the drawing to place in an appropriate place. Click and drag the drawing to position it in an appropriate place.
Point to the tools in toolbars. Now you can see that new tools are available to label the drawing.
In the TechDraw Dimensions toolbar,

click on the Insert Diameter Dimension tool (shown as circle with two sided arrow as diameter)

Click on the outer circle and click the Insert Diameter Dimension tool on the toolbar.

Point to the diameter value.

Now let us show the diameter of the outer circle.

Click on the circumference of the outer circle.

Select the Insert Diameter Dimension tool to mark the diameter of the outer circle.

The diameter is shown as 100 millimetres.

Click and drag the shown phi value to see the line clearly. Click and drag the phi value to see the line and value clearly.
Click on the phi value to open the Dimension dialog box in the Combo View.

Point to the box.

Double click on the phi value to open the Dimension dialog box in the Combo View.
Point to Overtolerance and Undertolerance values. You can change the tolerance value for the upper limit and lower limit values.
Change Overtolerance to 0.05

Uncheck the Equal Tolernace checkbox.

Under Display Style

Check the Filp Arrowheads

I will change the Overtolerance value to +/ -0.05 mm

Uncheck the Equal Tolernace checkbox.

Click the FilpArrowheads checkbox to flip and unflip the arrow heads.

Click on OK button.

Click on the circumference of the second circle and click the Insert Diameter Dimension tool on toolbar.

Change the Overtolerance value +/ -0.05 mm in the Dimension box in the Combo view.

Now repeat the process for the next circle.

Find the diameter and change the Overtolerance value.

Click on OK button.

Select the circle and click on the balloon shape on the tool bar.( Insert Balloon Annotation tool)

Double-click on the balloon to open its dialog box.

Point to the dialog box in the Combo View.

Select the smaller circle and select the Insert Balloon Annotation tool.

We can change the properties of the balloon by double-clicking on it.

In the Combo View, the Balloon dialog box opens.

Point to the Bubble Shape field. In the Bubble Shape field observe a small circle with an arrow.
Click on the dropdown arrow and select Rectangle. You can change the bubble shape to rectangle.
In the text field change the text to 8X Dia 8 Now change the text to 8X Dia 8(8 times dia 8).

It denotes that there are eight similar circles with diameter of 8 millimetres.

Click the insert balloon annotation tool on the toolbar. Draw another balloon for the outer circle.

Select the balloon.

Go to TechDraw menu on the menu bar Go to TechDraw on the menu bar.
Navigate and select Extension Attributes/Modifications option.

From the submenu Select Customize Format Label option.

Navigate and select Extensions: Attributes/Modifications option.

From the submenu Select Customize Format Label option.

Point to the dialog box A Customize Format dialog box will appear on the combo view.
Radius & Diameter tab

Select the diameter symbol.

select the diameter symbol from the Radius and Diameter tab.
In the Format field type diameter as 0.14.

Select the M from the modifiers tab.

Type vertical bar(|) using the key board.

Select A, C from Modifiers tab.

Type another vertical bar and finally select M.

In the format field, type the diameter as 0.14.

Select M from the Modifiers tab.

Type vertical bar or pipe using the keyboard

Then select A, C from the Modifiers tab.

Type another vertical bar and finally select M.

Click Ok button at the top accept changes. Now click the OK button at the top of the dialog box to accept the changes.
In the 'Combo View change the Bubble Shape to rectangle in the Balloon dialog box. Let us change the bubble shape to rectangle.
Click on the Create a Surface Finish symbol tool which is in tech draw draft annotation tool bar (tool has a Root symbol in the box.) You can add surface finish value by clicking the area to be surface finished.

Click the area to be surface finished,

Select Create a surface finish symbol.

Surface Finish Symbols dialog box opens in the Combo view.

Select the appropriate symbol and change the value to Rao,8 in the dropdown.

Surface Finish Symbols dialog box opens in the Combo View.

Select the appropriate symbol.

And select the average roughness value from the dropdown.

Click on OK button at the top. Then click the OK button at the top.
Press File >> Save to save the drawing. Now let us save our work .
Only Narration. With this we come to the end of this tutorial.
