What is Ubuntu? |
Ubuntu is a free and open-source operating system.
It is a secure and user-friendly OS. |

Let me login to the Ubuntu desktop using the login credentials.
This is the Ubuntu desktop workspace. It is the main screen where we interact with the system and access applications. |
| Cursor on Top Panel. | At the top, we see a horizontal bar called the Top panel.
This panel contains date, time, and system status. |
| Click Date and Time.
Cursor on Date, Time, Events.Click on DND button. Click on Bell icon. Cursor on Activities. |
Now, I will click on the date and time.
Here, we can change the date and time or add events. Let me click on the Do Not Disturb option to turn it on. When enabled, it silences notifications so that alerts do not disturb our work. It also includes the Activities menu. |

On the left side we see the Dock.
It contains icons of frequently used applications. At the top left corner, click on the Activities toggle button. The Activities Overview opens, here we can see all open windows. We can access new workspaces, by clicking on the right side of the screen. |

Right click on file test.txt |
Now from the Dock, let me click the Files icon.
The Files window opens. By default the Home folder is displayed. I will right-click on the test.txt file and select Move to Trash. This will delete the file from the Home folder. |
| Click on TrashCursor on TrashRight click on Test.txt file.
Highlight the Bottom message“ Test.txt file is Moved to a folder.” Click on X to close. |
To restore a deleted file, I will click on the Trash icon.
The Trash folder opens. Let us right click on the deleted Test.txt file and select Restore from Trash. A message displayed says file is Moved to a folder. Now close the folders by clicking on the x icon. |
| Click the Show Apps icon.
Type to search bar that appears, type Text Editor. Press Enter.Cursor on Trash icon on dock. Close by clicking x |
At the bottom left corner, let us click on the Show Apps icon.
Here we can see the available applications. In the Type to search bar, let me type Text Editor. Press Enter to open the application. Text Editor opens. In this way, we can search and open any application. Let me close this app. |
| Click on the Show Apps icon.
In the Type to search bar, type Terminal. Click on the Terminal icon. Point to the window. |
Now we will search and open Terminal.
Click on the Show Apps icon. In the Type to search bar, let me type Terminal. Click on the Terminal icon. Terminal window opens. |

The Ubuntu Terminal is a command-line interface used to interact with the operating system.
It is used to manage files, install software, and control system settings. Let us type apt space show space firefox APT stands for Advanced Package Tool. apt-get is an older command mainly intended for scripting and system administration. It provides stable and predictable output. apt is a newer, user-friendly command designed for interactive use. It is used in Ubuntu to install, update, upgrade, remove, and manage software. It retrieves packages from official repositories and automatically manages dependencies. Repositories provide software and while dependencies support its operation. Press Enter to see the Output. This will show detailed information about the Firefox package. |

Click Show AppsSearch Ubuntu Software. Right click on icon >> Select Pin to Dash. Cursor on Ubuntu Software in DockPress the Window key. |
We can manage applications by pinning and unpinning them.
Let us take an example. For unpinning right-click on the Ubuntu Software icon and select Unpin. Now let us click on Show Apps and search for Ubuntu Software. Let us right click on icon and select Pin to Dash. Notice that Ubuntu Software is now visible in Dock again. Press the Window key to close the search bar. |

Cursor on Sound, Dark Mode, Wifi settings. Drag the Volume slider to the right. Click on the Dark Mode button. Click on Power icon. Cursor on Suspend, Restart, Power Off and Logout. Click on the Lock icon. |
At the top-right corner we can see Network, Sound and Power icons.
Click on any one of these icons to open the menu. Menu has options like Sound, Dark mode, Wifi settings and others. I will increase the volume by dragging a slider. Click on the Dark Mode option to change into dark theme. Here the power menu provides options such as Suspend, Restart, Power Off and Logout. I will click the lock icon to lock the system. |
