| Slide 5Synaptic Package Manager | Synaptic Package Manager is a graphical front-end for APT(Advanced Package Tool.)
It provides a GUI for package management instead of apt-get command line. |
| Press Ctrl, Alt and T Keys
Type: sudo apt update and press enter Type: sudo apt install synaptic and press Enter key. |
By default, Synaptic Package Manager is not
pre-installed in the system. Let us install it using the Terminal. Open the Terminal. First let’s update the local package index. Type sudo apt update and press Enter. If prompted, enter the admin password and press Enter. Type sudo apt install synaptic and press Enter. |

Terminal displays list of packages to be installed and more information.
It asks Do you want to continue? Type y and press Enter to continue. |
| Show the installation process on the terminal.
Packages getting downloaded. Success message on the terminal Click on X icon. |
The installation begins now.
It may take some time to finish. Now we have successfully installed Synaptic Package Manager. Let us close the terminal. |
| Highlight output.Click Show AppsEnter password | Click Show Apps and search for Synaptic Package.
Open it and enter the admin password when prompted. Click on Authenticate button. |
| Cursor on Synaptic Package Manager | Synaptic Package Manager window opens.
Now let us configure Proxy and Repository. We have to do this before installing an application or package. |
| Click on Settings Click PreferencesCursor on PreferencesClick on Network | From the top menu, click on Settings and select Preferences.
Preferences window opens. Click on the Network Tab to configure the proxy settings. |
| Click Direct connection to the Internet.
Click Apply, Click OK |
From the Proxy Server options choose Direct connection to the Internet.
Click the Apply . Click OK to close the Preferences window. |
| Click Settings and select Repositories
Click on Download from Click Server for India. Click the Close button. |
Again, click on Settings and select Repositories.The Software and Updates window opens.
Click on the Download from dropdown. The Server for India option is selected by default, keep it as it is. This dropdown shows a list of Servers across the globe. Click the Close button. |
| At the top left corner, click on Reload button. | If using Synaptic Package Manager for the first time, reload the packages.
At the top left corner, click on Reload button. We see packages transferring over the internet and updating in real time. |
| Type VLCClick Search buttonShow packages
To select the VLC package, right click on the check box. |
We will now install VLC Media Player as an example application.
In the Search window, type VLC and click on the Search button. All the VLC packages to be downloaded will be listed. To select the relevant VLC package, right click on the check box. |
| From the menu select Mark for Installation.Synaptic pop-up appears.
Click on the Mark button.Click on the Apply button on the toolbar. |
From the menu select Mark for Installation.
Synaptic pop-up appears, to allow all dependencies to click on the Mark button. Click on the Apply button on the toolbar. |
| Cursor on the window.
Click on the Apply button. Point to the Applying Changes window. Click on the Close button. |
A Summary window appears, showing the details of the packages to be installed.
Click on the Apply button at the bottom. It may take some time to install the packages. The Applying Changes window will be closed as soon as the installation gets completed. Click on the Close button. |
