System Requirements

  • Mozilla Thunderbird 13.0.1
  • Ubuntu 12.04

Here we are using Mozilla Thunderbird 13.0.1 on Ubuntu 12.04.

Open Thunderbird. Click on the Thunderbird icon in the Launcher.
The Thunderbird window opens.
Let’s add another folder to this account.
From the left panel, select the account STUSERONE@GMAIL.COM. From the left panel, select the account STUSERONE at GMAIL dot COM
Right-click and select New Folder. Right-click on the account STUSERONE at gmail dot comand select New Folder.
  • Point to the New Folder dialog box.
  • In the Name field enter Important Mails.
  • Click Create Folder.
  • Point to the folder that is created.
  • The New Folder dialog box appears.
  • In the Name field enter Important Mails.
  • Click Create Folder.
  • The folder is created!
Now, you can move important mails from the Inbox to this folder.
Select, drag and drop this mail from the Inbox to the Important Mails folder. Let’s select, drag and drop this mail from the Inbox to the Important Mails folder.
You can search for messages using various filter options.
From the left panel, select the account STUSERONE@gmail.com. Now, from the left panel, select the account STUSERONE@gmail dot com.
In the right panel, under Advanced Features, click Search Messages. In the right panel, under Advanced Features, click Search Messages.
Point to the Search Messages dialog box. The Search Messages dialog box appears.
Let us use the default settings to search for messages.
Point to Match all of the following. The Match all of the following option is selected by default.
Then, under it, point to the first drop-down box Subject.

Point to second drop-down contains.

Subject.and Contains are also selected by default.
In the field enter Ten interesting. In the next field type Ten interesting.
Click Search. Click Search.
The mails that match the subject name are displayed.
Point your cursor on “Save as Search Folder” You can also save these searches in a folder.

Pause this tutorial and do this assignment.

Switch to Thunderbird.

Click the x in the top left corner and exit.

Create a Filter

  • A filter is a rule that you can apply to the messages in your mail box.
Let’s create a new filter for this mail account.

A filter is a rule that you can apply to sort the messages in your mail box.

Here, we shall move all mails with the subject Thunderbird to the Important Mails folder.
From the left panel, select the account STUSERONE@gmail.com. From the left panel, select the account STUSERONE@gmail dot com.
Under Advanced Features, click Manage message filters. Under Advanced Features, click Manage message filters.
Point to the Message Filters dialog box. The Message Filters dialog box appears.
Click New. Click on tab New.
Point to the Filter Rules dialog box. The Filter Rules dialog box appears.
In the Filter Name field, enter Subject Thunderbird. In the Filter Name field, enter Subject Thunderbird.
Again, let’s use the default settings to set the filter.
Point to Match all of the following. The Match all of the following option is selected by default.


Under it,Point to Subject and then Contains. Subject and Contains are also selected by default.
In the next field enter Thunderbird. In the next field type Thunderbird.
Under the Perform these actions field, select the drop-down and click Move Message to. Next, under the Perform these actions field, let’s change the option to Move Message to.
Click the next drop-down, browse and select the folder Important Mails. Click the next drop-down, browse and select the folder Important Mails.
Click OK. Click OK.
Point to the Filter that is displayed in the Message Filters dialog box. The Filter is displayed in the Message Filters dialog box.
Click Run Now. Click Run Now.
Close the dialog box. Close the dialog box.
Click the Important Mails folder. Now, click the Important Mails folder.
Point, that the mails are with the subject Thunderbird have been moved to this folder. Notice, that the mails are with the subject Thunderbird have been moved to this folder.

Manage Multiple email Accounts

  • Manage multiple email accounts with Thunderbird.
  • Receive, send, and manage mails not only in your Gmail
  • Also Yahoo or any other mail account using Thunderbird.

  • This means, you can receive, send, and manage mails not only in your Gmail but also Yahoo or any other mail account using Thunderbird.

● Configure the Yahoo account through Thunderbird


Let’s configure the Yahoo account, STUSERTWO@yahoo dot in through Thunderbird.

● Enabling the POP option in Yahoo mail.

I have already enabled POP in the Yahoo account.
How did I do it?

First I logged into my yahoo account.<Pause>

Open a fresh firefox browser.

Type www,yahoo.in.

Enter User Name: STUSERTWO

Enter Password:password123!

Click Sign in.

Next, open a fresh browser and in the address bar type www.yahoo.in.

Now enter the user name STUSERTWO at yahoo.in and then the password


From the top-left corner, click Options and Mail Options. From the top-left corner, click Options and Mail Options.
In the left panel, click POP and Forwarding. In the left panel, click POP and Forwarding.
Select Access Yahoo! Mail via POP.

Click Close the tab.

Select Access Yahoo Mail via POP.

Click Close the tab.

A dialog box with the message to save changes appears.

Click save.

Log out of Yahoo and close the browser. Now, let’s log out of Yahoo and close the browser.
Switch to Thunderbird.
From the right panel, under Accounts, click Create New Account. Now, from the right panel , under Accounts, click Create New Account.
Point to the Mail Account Setup dialog box. The Mail Account Setup dialog box appears.
Enter name as USERTWO. Now, let’s enter Name as USERTWO.
Next, in Email Address, enter the Yahoo id STUSERTWO@YAHOO.IN

Then enter the password: password123!

Next, in Email Address, let’s enter the Yahoo id STUSERTWO@YAHOO.IN

Then type the password

Click Continue. Click Continue.
Point to the Mail Account Settings dialog box. The Mail Account Setup dialog box appears.
  • In the Incoming Server Name field select POP3 and enter the server hostname as pop.mail.yahoo.com.
  • In the Incoming Server Name field select POP3 and enter the server hostname as pop dot mail dot yahoo dot com.
We select POP3 as we want to check mails offline

and therefore download all the mails to our local computer.

  • In the Incoming Port field enter the port number for yahoo that is 110.
  • In the SSL drop-down select STARTTLS.
  • In the Incoming Authentication drop-down select Normal password.
In the Incoming field,
  • For Port, enter the port number for yahoo, that is, 110.
  • In the SSL drop-down, select STARTTLS.
  • Click the Authentication drop-down and select Normal password.
  • In the Outgoing Server Name field select SMTP and enter the server hostname as smtp.mail.yahoo.com.
  • In the Outgoing Port field enter the port number for yahoo that is 465.
  • In the SSL drop-down select SSL/TLS.
  • In the Outgoing Authentication drop-down select Normal password.
In the Outgoing field,
  • In the Server Name select SMTP and enter the server hostname as: smtp.mail.yahoo.com.
  • For Port, enter the port number for yahoo, that is, 465.
  • In the SSL drop-down, select SSL/TLS.
  • Click the Authentication drop-down and select Normal password.
In the User Name enter the name STUSERTWO. In the User Name field, let’s enter the name STUSERTWO.
Point to the Create Account button is enabled The Create Account button is enabled.
Click Create Account. Click Create Account.
The Yahoo account is configured.

Depending on your Internet connection, this may take a few minutes.

Select the Yahoo account in the Thunderbird interface. Notice that the right panel in the Thunderbird window now displays the Yahoo account.
Click Inbox.

Point to the mails that have been downloaded.

Let’s click on Inbox.

All the mails from the Yahoo account have been downloaded here.

You can now use Thunderbird to not only view mails received

from your Yahoo and Gmail accounts,

but also mange the two accounts at one go!

Now, let’s look at the preference settings that are available for email accounts in Thunderbird.

Set Preferences in Thunderbird You may want to:

  • Have a copy of the mails sent through Thunderbird stored in the Gmail account
  • Quote original messages when replying
  • Identify junk messages
  • Not download certain messages if

the disk space on your computer is full

Select the Gmail account. From the left panel, let’s select the Gmail account.
Point to the Thunderbird Mail dialog box. The Thunderbird Mail dialog box appears.
From the right panel, under Accounts, click View Settings for this account. From the right panel, under Accounts, click View Settings for this account.
Point to the Account Settings dialog box The Account Settings dialog box appears.
In the left panel, again select the Gmail account. In the left panel, again select the Gmail account.

Now, click on Server Settings.

Now, click on Server Settings.

Point to the Server Settings that are displayed in the right panel.

The Server Settings are displayed in the right panel.

In the check box Check for new messages every enter 20. In the check box Check for new messages every enter 20.

Thunderbird will now check for messages every 20 minutes.

Check the box Empty Trash on Exit. Check the box Empty Trash on Exit.

All messages in the Trash folder will be deleted whenever you exit Thunderbird.


Point to the other options in the dialog box. In the same manner you can customize your server settings.

Setting The Options

  • Create copies of mails,
  • Save draft mails,
  • Change the location of the mails saved.
In a similar manner, we can also set options to:
  • create copies of mails,
  • save draft mails,
  • change the location of the mails saved.
From the left panel, click Copies and Folders. From the left panel, click Copies and Folders.
Point to the Copies and Folders dialog box displayed on the right panel. The Copies and Folders dialog box is displayed on the right panel.
Point to the default options. Let’s keep these default options as they are.
Point to the option. Notice the option Place a copy in and Sent folder on are already selected.
From the left panel, select Disc Space. To set options to save disk space, from the left panel, let’s select Disc Space.
Now, from the right panel, check the box, Don’t download messages larger than.

Now, in the KB field, enter 60.

Now, from the right panel, you will see the option To save disc space, do not download.

Check the box Messages larger than.

Now, in the KB field, enter 60.

Thunderbird will not download messages that are greater than 60KB.


Another useful Thunderbird feature is Identify Junk Messages.

You can train Thunderbird to identify junk and non junk messages.

Junk Mail Settings

  • First set Junk Settings
  • Mark mails as “junk” and “non junk”.
  • Initially, you must identify Junk

  • By clicking the Junk Mail button for each

  • And move it to the Junk folder
  • To do this you must first set Junk Settings and then mark mails as junk and non junk.

Switch to TB.
In the Account Settings dialog box, from the left panel, click Junk Settings. In the Account Settings dialog box, from the left panel, click Junk Settings.
The Junk Settings dialog box appears on the right-panel. The Junk Settings dialog box appears on the right-panel.
Point to the checked box Enable adaptive mail junk mail controls for this account box. Notice that the Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account box is checked by default.
Under the Do not mark mail as junk if the sender is in box, check all the options. Under the Do not mark mail as junk if the sender is in list, check all the options.
Select the Move new junk message to field and select Junk folder on option. Select the Move new junk message to field and select Junk folder on option.
Click OK. Click OK.
Now, click on Inbox and select the first mail. Now, click on Inbox and select the first mail.
Point to the bottom panel. The contents of the mail are displayed in the bottom panel.
Click the Junk icon. Click the Junk icon.
Point to the header Junk mail. Notice that the header Junk Mail is displayed.
In a similar manner you can set other preferences too!
Finally, can we delete a mail account that we configured in Thunderbird?

Yes, we can!

From the left panel, select the account. From the left panel, select the account STUSERONE@gmail dot com.
From the Right Panel, under Accounts select View Settings for this account. From the right panel, under Accounts select View Settings for this account.
Point to the Account Settings dialog box. The Account Settings dialog box appears.
Click Account Actions and then click Remove Account. From the bottom left corner, click Account Actions and then click Remove Account.
Point to the warning message. A warning message is displayed.
Point to OK. If we click on OK, the account will be deleted.

However, for the purposes of this tutorial, we will not delete this account.

Click Cancel. So we will click Cancel.
Click the X button on the top-left corner to exit the Account Settings dialog box. Let’s close this dialog box.

Delete a Mail account Remember, when you delete an email account

  • All the folders and the mails
  • Corresponding to that email account
  • Will be deleted from Thunderbird
  • Details may still be displayed in

the left panel of the Mozilla Thunderbird window
