Welcome to the spoken tutorial on Match and Align Video and Audio.

Learning Objectives

In this tutorial, we will learn to,
  • Add a new audio clip to the project
  • Match and align video and audio clips recursively
  • Use cut, trim, delete and move functions for alignment

System and Software Requirement

To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux v18.04 OS and
  • Blender 2.90.1

  • Learner must be familiar with the Blender interface.

Code Files

  • Files used in this tutorial are provided in the Code files link.
  • Please download and extract the files.
  • Make a copy and then use them while practising.
Show opened blender interface. I have already opened the Blender interface.
Click on File, Open. Click on File, Open to open the saved Blender project.
From the Videos folder, choose the align.blend project file. I have saved the input file in the Videos folder.

Click on Open. Click on Open to open the project.
Cursor next to the audio track. The project has audio and video tracks.
Cursor on the audio track. I will delete the existing audio tracks and add a new audio clip to the project.
Left click on any clip in the audio channel. Let’s select all the audio clips in the audio channel.

For this, first left click on any audio clip in the audio channel.

Adjust the zoom level as needed. Use the mouse scroll wheel to adjust to desired zoom level.
Adjust the bottom scroll bar left right to adjust field of view. Move the scroll bar at the bottom to adjust the field of view.
Go to Select, Channel and select Both Sides. Go to Select, Channel and select Both Sides.

Now all the audio clips in the channel gets selected.

Press the Delete key. Press the Delete key to delete the audio clips.
Click on the File Browser panel and show the options. In the File explorer seen on the top left, go to the videos directory.

If you do not see the file browser, click on the folder icon to navigate.

Click on View in the File Browser panel and show the options. To adjust or change the style, use the options under the View menu as seen here.


In the file browser seen on top left, go to the videos directory. I have an audio file in the videos folder.
Click on the filter funnel icon in the file browser. If the audio file is not seen, click on the filter funnel icon in the file browser.
Check the box for the Sound files. Check the box for Sound files to show the audio files.
Select audio.ogg file. Select the audio.ogg file and add it to the Sequencer panel.
Select the file, hold, drag and drop below the video channel. For this, hold, drag and drop it below the video channel.
Move the audio clip to match the starting to the video track. I will adjust to match the starting position of the video track as seen here.

Let's match and align the video and audio in the clip.

Cursor on the no signal region in the audio. If the audio waveform is not visible, display it.

The regions without waveform signal, does not have audio in them.

Learner may use them as guides while editing.

Cursor to show between 20-50 seconds. Pause the tutorial video and do the following.

Play the clip in blender from 20-50 seconds.

Cursor on the interface. Notice the repeated audio, misaligned audio and regions in video to be deleted.
Zoom into the video strip at 24-30 second region. Zoom into the strips around the 25-30 second region.
I have repeated the open the blender interface line twice here.
Play the region between 24-30 seconds Let’s trim the repeated region in the video and audio.
Place the playhead around 28 seconds. Place the playhead around 28 seconds.
Select both audio and video clips. Select both audio and video clips.
Press K. Press the K key to cut the clips.

This is a soft cut.

Select the left side video clip.

Hold left handle.

Trim to 25 second mark.

Select the video clip on the left side.

Hold the right handle and drag to trim the video to 25 second mark.

Select the audio clip.

Trim to 25 seconds mark.

Select the audio clip and trim to 25 seconds mark as well.
Move the playhead from 34-40 seconds. Let’s move the playhead from 34-40 seconds.

Notice, the 35-38 second region in the video needs correction.

Place the playhead at 42 seconds, select both clips and press K. Place the playhead at 42 seconds.

Select both clips and press K.

Select the audio clip. Let’s select the audio clip.
Next, Place the playhead at 35 seconds mark and Press K. Place the playhead at 35 second mark and Press K.
Pause the tutorial video and play the video from 42 seconds.
Cursor on the 35-42 second region in audio. The audio from 35-42 seconds have to align with the video from 42 seconds.
Cursor at 46-51 seconds region in audio. Audio from 42-47 seconds has to be placed from 35 seconds.
Let’s cut, swap and align the audio.
Cut audio at 45 seconds and at 51 seconds. Let's select the audio clip and make cuts at 45 seconds.
Hover mouse over the channels. To move the audio around comfortably, I will use more channels.
Select the left audio Strip. To move a clip, select it first.

Select the left audio clip.

Move it to the channel above the video clip to the right. Move it to the channel above the video clip to the right.

Click, hold, drag and drop it, in the desired location.

Let’s position it approximately now.
In the Strip tab, go to the Time section. You may also change the channel using the Property panel or Sidebar.

Click twice on the arrow on the left to show the options in the Time section. If the options are not seen, click on the arrow on the left.
Click twice on the arrow on the left of Time.

Cursor on Channel.

Notice the channel number.
Cursor on the form, for Channel. Enter the desired channel number in the form, to move the media strip.
Move the right side clip to the left. I will move the right side clip to the left.
move the audio in the top channel back to the audio channel. I will also move the audio in the top channel as seen here.

Now it is back in channel number 1.

Go to the Strip tab. We can also mute clips.

To mute a clip, go to the Strip tab.

Uncheck the box next to file name. Notice the check box next to the file name.

Uncheck the box to mute the clip.

Cursor to show the clip color change. Notice the color change to grey when the clip is muted.
Check the box next to the file name to show the clip. I will unmute the clip now.
Let’s scroll further to see if the audio and video are aligned.
Playhead at the end of the sentence. At 38 seconds, the video cue changed.

I want the video frame to change only at the end of the sentence.

Press Shift+K when the frame change. Let’s hard cut the video at 42 seconds where the frame changes.
Select the video clip on the right side.

Trim till 44 seconds, using the left handle.

Select the video clip on the right side.

Click on the left handle and trim till the end of the audio gap as seen here.

Select the clip in the left of the gap. Select the clip on the left of the gap.
Hold the right handle and move over the gap. Hold the right handle and move over the gap.
Cursor on the sequencer panel. Play the video completely and note down any changes you may desire.
Cursor on the preview panel. Complete any further change you want.

You can also save any frame number in the video to an image file.

click on Render, Render image. To save a frame, click on the Render, Render image option.
Click on Image, Save as to open the dialog box. The Render window opens and the frame can be seen.

Click on Image, Save as to open the Blender File View dialog box.

Click open the options for File format and choose PNG. Click open the options for File format on the right side and choose PNG.
Cursor on RGB and compression parameter. The output is set to RGBA to obtain a color image output.

I will retain the rest of the defaults.

Choose Videos folder to save the file. I will choose the Videos folder to save the file.
Type output filename as frame.png.

Click on Save As Image.

I will give the output filename as frame.png.

Click on Save As Image to save the frame.

Close the Render window. Close the Render window.

Save the project, render to an output file and quit Blender.
