Time Narration
00.00 Welcome to a presentation on the Guidelines for recording and narration of spoken tutorial.
00.07 Please listen to the introduction to Spoken tutorial available at http://www.spoken-tutorial.org before starting this tutorial.
00.17 Creation of a tutorial starts with writing a script.
00.21 The Script needs to be validated before recording.
00.24 Only after the script is validated & approved, should you record the tutorial.
00.29 Recording of a tutorial consists of two simultaneous activities,
       Narration &
       Screen casting
00.36 There are certain things you need to keep in mind before starting to record.

They are as follows -

00:43 If a laptop is used, to charge the battery & disconnect the power chord.

Otherwise there could be humming noise or echoing.

00:51 Switch off the fan before recording.
00:54 This also helps in eliminating external noise.
00.57 Let us see a tutorial with external noise.

I have saved some files demonstrates this.

01.16 The humming noise may not be obvious to you if you do not use the head phone.
01.22 Turn off mobiles.

Silent mode also can introduce disturbance.

01.28 Let us see an example with a cell phone on silent mode.
01.41 You do not need a pin drop silence studio to create good spoken tutorial.

You just have to close windows & door.

01.50 To cut out the external noise like birds & traffic,
01.53 Let us see a honking example.

We will now present some guideline for this tutorial.

Ensure that the terminal font is large.Use a minimum of 20 point.

02.15 Let us see a examples of small & large fonts.

Small font result in poor quality video.

02.31 I should show you a video which has big fonts.

Here is how the font need to look like while recording.

02.46 Use a minimum of 24 point font size on slides.

I am using 32 point font size implemented by beamer command of 17 pt.

03.01 Unmaximised windows place them in overlapping manner.

This will allow easy switching from one windows to another.

03.10 You can see window selection easily.

It is difficult to see this when you use maximised windows.

03.18 For the current tutorial that I am recording I have placed the windows in an overlapping manner.

You can see that switching off windows is easy & also you can see selection of windows.

This is the PDF file, this is the internet browser & this is the Sample folder.

03.46 you can even opto-placed the windows in a different manner as we can see now in this tutorial on latex.

This is the terminal, this is the editor & this is the pdf file.

Now we will present guideline on what to do while recording.

04.05 Position the mic at a fixed distance from your mouth.

This will keep the audio volume consistent.

04.11 let us see what will happen if you do not follow this rule, I shall advance it now.

Now we can hear it louder. While recording use headset with mic input.

By not using it the voice may be echoing or inconsistent with humming noise.

04.51 At this point I would like to talk about accent;

Speak clearly,

Speak naturally without putting on an accent.

05.00 Let us see an example of artificial accent; of the basic function to create a new file go to the menu.

Ideally record the tutorial in one go to get uniform tone throughout the recording.

But some processes involve long delays,if so use the pause feature of the screen casting software.

This will reduce the capture of unnecessary footage.

05.34 No one get the recording right in the first go,so we recommend a sample recording for a couple of minutes.

Submit it to spoken tutorial team for feedback.

Only after approval should you do the final recording .

05.50 For more details on the guideline on narration, please go through this wiki page.
05.56 Please make sure you go through guideline on screen casting too.

For recording, we recommend the use of free & open source application like

                *Record my desktop on linux
                *Camstudio on windows
06.15 To know how to use record my desktop please go to our website http://www.spoken-tutorial.org.

Here is were you can find tutorial on how to use record my desktop .

06.33 To know how to use camstudio on windows, please go here.

It is available in many languages.

06.44 For a self verification, please go through the checklist given here.
06.51 A complete spoken tutorial goes through a quality check by

A novice,

The Spoken tutorial admin team,

And then by an Expert.

07.04 A novice is a person who is new to the particular foss.

Novice tests the tutorial following the instruction given in the tutorial.

If the novice encounter bugs they are rectified by the creator.

07.22 The spoken tutorial admin team checks if

the parameters,

the audio quality,

the video quality are according to the standards.

07.34 The admin team of spoken tutorial check against the criteria given in this checklist.

An expert check for the criteria given in this checklist.

07.45 If the Expert suggest changes, the creator incorporate the changes and makes the tutorial better for learning.
07.54 In this tutorial I have shed light on what need to be done before, during & after the recording & how to verify & validate the tutorial once it is created.
08.06 This brings us to the end of this tutorial on Guidelines for Recording and narration.
08.12 SPOKEN TUTORIAL PROJECT is an initiative of the Talk to a Teacher project, developed at IIT Bombay.
