00:00 Hello and welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on Filing a Workpiece

00:24 For this tutorial we require

00:28 The workpiece to be filed
00:31 Bench Vice to hold the workpiece
00:34 Vernier Calliper to measure
00:37 Try Square to check the workpiece's squareness
00:42 Hack saw to cut the workpiece
00:45 Punch to mark on the workpiece
00:48 And a Ball pein hammer
00:51 Let's first see, what is filing.
00:54 Filing is a method of removing excess material from a job or a workpiece using a file.
01:02 There are various types of files for various requirements
01:07 Flat file, for rectangular cross-section
01:11 Smooth file : for getting smooth surfaces
01:15 Safe edge file : for filing the right angled part of the workpiece
01:21 Square file : for developing square corners & square holes
01:27 Half run file : for filing semi-spherical surfaces
01:32 And Round file : for developing holes & round groves.
01:38 Let’s us now learn the filing process.
01:41 My requirement is a 5 by 4 inch workpiece.
01:46 The job or the work-piece which I have is 5 by 4 inches.
01:52 So let us first cut the excess 1 inch part.
01:58 For this, apply the marking medium on the work-piece.
02:03 You can use a chalk piece or ink as a marking medium.
02:08 Once the medium is applied, mark the work-piece using a jenny caliper, as shown.
02:15 So, I am marking a little less than 1 inch according to my requirement.
02:21 Next, use a punch and ball pein hammer to punch on the marked line.
02:28 After this, place the work-piece parallel to the jaws of the Vice.
02:34 Now tighten it to hold the work-piece in place.
02:38 This is so that we can cut the work-piece easily.
02:42 Next, take the hack saw and cut the excess portion of the work-piece.
02:48 Once the excess part is removed, measure the work-piece once again.
02:54 Yes, the measurement is proper now. I have 5 by 3 inches .
03:00 Now, let’s start filing.
03:02 First we have to select a suitable file.
03:06 I need a smooth edge, so I will choose the Smooth file.
03:11 Make sure that the handle of the file is securely fitted.
03:16 Do not use a file without a proper handle.
03:19 You will end up injuring your hands.
03:22 Make sure that the file is clean before you start filing.
03:27 Using rusted files will damage the work-piece as well as bruise your hands.
03:34 So, now I have selected the proper file.
03:38 Next step is to place the work-piece securely in the Bench vice once again.
03:45 Position yourself at 90 degree perpendicular to the Bench vice.
03:51 Place your left leg in the front & right leg at the back.
03:57 This is the best position for filing.
04:00 Now hold the handle of the file firmly in your right hand.
04:05 With your left hand, hold the tip of the file as shown.
04:10 Ensure that, the right thumb is pressing the handle of the file firmly.
04:15 Now we are ready to start filing.
04:18 There are three methods of filing. They are :
04:21 Straight forward filing
04:23 Draw filing
04:25 Diagonal or cross filing.
04:28 Let’s see them one by one.
04:30 Moving the file lengthwise across the surface of the work-piece is called Straight forward filing.
04:38 In this method, the filing is done by moving the file up & down slowly.
04:44 You can see that your work-piece is getting filed and the excess material is being removed.
04:51 In Draw filing method, the file is pulled towards the body with an even pressure.
04:58 In Diagonal filing method, the file is moved diagonally over the surface of the work-piece.
05:06 The movement of the file is from one corner of the work-piece to another, diagonally.
05:13 Once the filing is done, we have to check the flatness & squareness of the work-piece surface.
05:21 This is done with the help of Try-Square & Vernier caliper.
05:26 To check whether the flatness is proper, place the Try-square on the work-piece as shown.
05:33 Do so at 3 different places on the work-piece.
05:38 Check this against a light source.
05:41 This is a clear indication of flatness.
05:44 If the surface is uneven, then you will see light rays between the work-piece and the Try-square.
05:52 In such cases, you will need to file again.
05:57 Next we will check the squareness of the work-piece by using the Try-square.
06:03 Keep the Try-square on the corner of the work-piece, as shown.
06:07 Now touch the edges of the Try-square on two adjacent sides of the work-piece, like this.
06:14 Check whether the adjacent sides of the work-piece are at 90 degrees to each other.
06:20 If not, then file again.
06:23 Another measurement that we need to do is to check the thickness of the work-piece.
06:29 For this, we have to use a Vernier caliper.
06:33 Place the work-piece within the jaws of the Vernier caliper, as shown.
06:38 Measure the thickness of the work-piece.
06:41 Now repeat this at least on three different locations on the work-piece.
06:47 Identical measurement indicates that the work-piece is even in thickness.
06:53 Now its time to learn what not to do while filing.
06:57 Do not file a work-piece at an angle
07:00 Do not file a work-piece at both the edges skipping the centre.
