To follow this tutorial,
  • Learner must be familiar with basic computer and Internet skills.

The official website of Scribus is shown here.
Open the web browser and go to https://www.scribus.net/ . Open a web browser and go to the Scribus website.
Click on the menu. Click on the menu.
Click on the Get Scribus link. Click on the Get Scribus link.
Scroll down and cursor on current branch release of 1.5.x . Scroll down to notice the current branch release of 1.5.x.

When you practice this tutorial, this number may be different.

Click on TAKE ME TO THE DOWNLOADS. Click on TAKE ME TO THE DOWNLOADS.
Scroll down and show the downloadables for many OS. Scroll down and notice the downloadables for many operating systems.
Cursor on current development candidate and the downloadables. Though 1.4 is listed as the stable branch, we find the 1.5 is working well.

The current development candidate is Scribus 1.5.6.1.

Download and open Scribus in Windows 10 OS

Now, let’s download and open Scribus in Windows 10 OS.

Click on the Windows ,7, 8 or 10 in 64 bits link.

Click on the link seen below the Windows ,7, 8 or 10 in 64 bits.

The page is directed to the Files section in the Sourceforge website.

Scroll down and click on the scribus-1.5.6.1-windows-x64.exe file link. Scroll down and click on the scribus exe file link.
Cursor on the web page. The page refreshes and after a short while the download starts.

If you get a Save file prompt, save the file to the computer.

Open file manager and notice the Scribus file in the Downloads folder. Allow the download to complete.

Open File explorer and notice the Scribus file in the Downloads folder.

Double click on the icon to open the User Control Prompt.

Choose Yes and click on it.

Double click on the icon to open the User Control Prompt.

Choose Yes to start the installation.

Point to the Installer Language prompt window.

Point to English.

Click on OK.

In the Installer Language prompt, I will retain the default English language.

Click on OK.

Click on Next in the dialog box We see a Welcome message.

In the Scribus Setup dialog box, click on Next.

Choose the option, I accept the terms of the License Agreement and click on Next again. Choose the option, I accept the terms of the License Agreement.

Click on Next again.

Uncheck the boxes for Desktop shortcut and Shortcuts for All Users.

Click on Next.

I will uncheck the boxes for Desktop shortcut and Shortcuts for all users.

You may retain them if you desire and click on Next.

Cursor on the disk space requirements. I will retain the default destination folder.

Here, notice the disk space requirements for Scribus installation.

Click on Next. Click on Next to proceed further.
Click on Install. I will retain the default in the next step and click on Install.
Point to the Installing files. Allow the installation process to complete.
Uncheck the box for Run Scribus and Show Readme options. I will uncheck the box for Run Scribus and Show Readme options.
Click on Finish. Click on Finish to complete the installation.
Press the Windows key on the keyboard. To open the installed program, first press the Windows key on the keyboard.
Type Scribus in the search form notice the Scribus 1.5.6.1 Type Scribus in the search form and notice the Scribus 1.5.6.1 listed.
Select it, then double click. Select it, then double click or press Enter to open the software interface.

We will set the parameters for a new document from here.

I will explain this part after installing Scribus on Ubuntu Linux.

Download and open Scribus in Ubuntu Linux 18.04 OS

Now, let’s download and open Scribus in Ubuntu Linux 18.04 OS.
Point to the browser.

The appimage file for Linux system does not require installation.
Click on the file scribus-1.5.6.1-linux-x86_64.AppImage . Linux users can click on the appimage file to download it.
Cursor on the Sourceforge website. The page is directed to the Files section in the Sourceforge website.
Scroll down. Click on the Scribus appimage' file. Scroll down and click on the Scribus appimage' file.


Select Save file option and click on Ok. The download starts in a short while.

If a save dialogue box opens, Select the Save file option.

Click on Ok to download the file.

Press Ctrl+Alt+T . Allow the file download to complete and open a terminal.

The file is saved in the Downloads folder for me.

Type, cd Downloads/ and press Enter. Change directory to the Downloads folder as seen here.
Type, chmod u+x scribus-1.5.6.1-linux-x86_64.AppImage and press Enter. Change the file mode to an executable file using the chmod command as seen here.
Type, ./scribus-1.5.6.1-linux-x86_64.AppImage and press Enter. Now enter the command as seen to start the program.

Let's set the parameters for a new document from here.

Select Single Page for Document Layout. Select Single Page for Document Layout.
Point to the settings I will retain the default setting for the rest of the fields.
Click on OK. Click on OK to start a new document.
Cursor on the new document. A blank document opens, where the user can add various types of contents.
Cursor on the new document. Contents can be text, image, tables, shapes or calligraphy.
Click on the T icon. Let’s add a text frame.

Click on the T icon on the top.

Place the cursor near the top left of the document. I will place the cursor near the top left of the document.

Notice the mouse crosshair displays the exact position for X and Y.

Cursor on the bottom right. They are also seen at the bottom right of the interface.
Left click at the desired position. Left click, hold and drag at the desired position, to see a red text frame.

Notice a palm sign, which will allow the text frame to be moved.

Double click inside the text box.

Type, My first test inside the text box.

Double click inside the text box.

I will type, My first text inside it.

Click on anywhere outside the box. Click on anywhere outside the box to disengage or escape from the edit mode.
Click inside the textbox and move it in the page and show resize. Now, the text box boundary turns black.

Click inside the textbox again to move or resize it.

Cursor next to the round handles to resize the box. Notice the round handles (or nodes) on the corner and edges of the text box.

They can be used to resize and move the text box.

Click, hold and move to resize the box. Place the cursor on a handle (or node) and see a two-direction arrow.

Click, hold the left mouse button and drag to resize the box to desire.

I will make the text box smaller for the text to fit in.

Hover cursor on the rulers on the sides. Notice the rulers along the length and edge of the document.

You may use this to guide placement and frame size.

Click on View, Measurement and hover next to Show rulers. If you do not see the rulers, click on View, Measurement and select on Show rulers.

Horizontal and vertical guides can be drawn from the rulers.

Place the cursor on the space in the vertical ruler.

Click, hold and drag it to the canvas.

Place the cursor on the space on the ruler on the top.

Click, hold and drag it to the canvas to add a guide.

Add vertical guide.

Click on the left side ruler, hold and drag the guide to the canvas.

Similarly, vertical guides can be added from the ruler on the left side.

Click on the left side ruler, hold and drag the guide to the canvas.

Click on View, Grids and Guides, Show Grid. Grids can be added through View, Grids and Guides and Show Grid in the menu.
Press Ctrl+ scroll wheel to adjust zoom level. To adjust the zoom level, press the control key and use the mouse scroll wheel.
Click on View and show the zoom options. You may also use the options under the View menu.
Cursor next to adjust zoom at the bottom menu. The option is also present in the menu bar at the bottom.
Click on File, Save. Choose File, Save to save the work.

The default extension for the document is sla.

Type postcard.sla for filename and choose Desktop folder. I will give file name, postcard.sla and save in the file my Documents folder.
Click on Ok. Click on OK to save the file.
Click on File, Quit. To quit Scribus, go to the File menu and choose Quit.
