System Requirement

This tutorial is recorded using,
  • Ubuntu Linux OS version 18.04
  • Windows 10
  • Mac OS version 10.14.5
  • Firefox web Browser version 86.0
  • Java version 11.0.10


Open the browser >> enter the address as shown here.

https://phet.colorado.edu/.


Press Enter key.

Point to PhET interactive Simulations page.

Let us open the PhET website.


Open your default web browser and type the address as shown.


Then press the Enter key.

PhET interactive simulations page opens.

Cursor on the page. Now we will learn about, what is PhET?
Click on the back button to go back to the main page. On the homepage of PhET simulations,

scroll down to the bottom of the page.


Then click on ABOUT PHET link.

Point to the heading. A new page opens with the heading About PhET.

This page has information about PhET.

Point to the video.

Click on the play button and play the video.


Below the information a short video about PhET simulations is available.

I will click on the play button and play the video for some time.

Point to Videos About PhET on the right-side panel.


Click on the videos to watch.

On the right-side panel, Videos About PhET are listed.

Click on the videos and watch them.

Click on the back arrow. Click on the back arrow button to go back to the home page.
Click on the REGISTER NOW button on the left side of the page. Now let us see how to register on this page.

Scroll down the page.

On the left side of the page, you will see REGISTER NOW button.

Hover the mouse over the button.


Click on the button.

Click on the button.
Cursor on the page. Create Your PhET Account page opens.
Point to the options.

Choose the option and click Next.

Here you have to choose an appropriate option.


As an example, I will choose Teacher and click on the Next button.

Point to the page. Tell Us About You page opens.

On this page, fill in all the details in appropriate fields.

Point to the Next button

For example, your valid Email address, First name, and other details.

Then click on the Next button.

Point to the page. Select any one of the PhET Experience options on the page.

Click on the REGISTER NOW button.

Registration Confirmation

You will receive an email from PhET simulations admin team.

Open your registered email account.


Click on the link sent by PhET simulations admin team to activate the registration.

Point to the SIGN IN button.

Click on the Sign In icon available at the top-right corner of the page.


Point to the Email address and Password.

After completing the activation process you can sign in.


Click on the Sign In icon available at the top-right corner of the page.


Sign In using your registered Email id and Password.

Type email id and enter the password.


Click on the SIGN IN button.

I will Sign In using my email id and password.

Then click on the SIGN IN button

Point to UPDATE PROFILE button.


Click on SKIP FOR NOW.

You can update your profile here.


I will skip for now.

Cursor on the home page. Now let us see how to use PhET simulations in online mode.
Point to centre of the page.

Click on EXPLORE OUR SIMS button.

In the centre of the page click on EXPLORE OUR SIMS button.

The simulations page opens.

Point to the tabs: Browse and Filter. On the page, we have two tabs, namely Browse and Filter


The Browse tab is selected by default.

Scroll down the page to show the simulations subject-wise In the Browse tab simulations are arranged subject-wise.


Scroll down the page to see all the simulations, arranged subject-wise.

Point to Math.


Click on the arrow button next to it.

Let us say we want to check the simulations given under Math.


For this, click on the arrow button next to it.

Scroll down the page All the simulations under Math are displayed.


Scroll down the page to see all the simulations listed under Math.

Click on the back arrow button. Let us go back to the previous page.


Click on the back arrow button of the browser to go to the previous page.

Click on the Filter tab. Now click on the Filter tab.
Point to all the filters.


SUBJECT, GRADE LEVEL, COMPATIBILITY, ACCESSIBILITY and LOCALE.

In the Filter tab, the left-panel has the following filters:


SUBJECT, GRADE LEVEL, COMPATIBILITY, ACCESSIBILITY and LOCALE.


Using these filters we can narrow down our search.

Under COMPATIBILITY >>

Click on the check box to uncheck it.


Point to the changed number.

By default under COMPATIBILITY, HTML5 checkbox is selected.


Let me uncheck the HTML5 option.


Now we can see all the simulations available in different file formats.

Point to the HTML5 files. The HTML5 files are browser-based.


These files upon downloading are saved as .html files.


They can be directly opened using any browser like Firefox or Chrome.

Point to the Java files. Java files on the other hand require Java installation in the systems.
Point to the Java files. Java installation on various OS is explained in the Additional Reading Material.
Click on the By Grade Level link. Let us click on the plus sign next to the GRADE LEVEL filter.


Point to the checkboxes.

Elementary School

Middle School

High School and

University.

A drop-down opens with four checkboxes.

Elementary School

Middle School

High School and

University.

Click on the High School check box.


Highlight the 126 Results and High school that appear at the top of the page


Move the cursor on the displayed Simulations.

Here you can choose the grade level

as per your requirement.


I will click on the High School check box.

The page refreshes.


All simulations that are under the High School category are displayed.

Point to A-Z drop-down button.


Click on the drop-down button to arrange.

Simulations can be arranged alphabetically using the A-Z drop-down button.


We can arrange the simulations in ascending, descending or Newest order.

Click the simulation thumbnail. To run, any simulation online click the simulation thumbnail.
Click on Atomic Interactions simulation.

Point to the page.


Point to the DOWNLOAD button.


Click on the DOWNLOAD button.

I will click on Atomic Interactions simulation.

A new page opens with the simulation details.


Below the simulation, we have a DOWNLOAD button to download the simulation.


Click on the DOWNLOAD button to save the file.

Point to the dialog box.


Point to the OK button.


Click on the OK button.

A dialog box prompting to save the file opens.


Select Save File radio button.


Then click on the OK button to save the file.


The file downloads to the Downloads folder.

Click on the play icon to run.


Run the simulation for some time.

Click on the play icon on the player to run the simulation online.

The simulation interface opens to explore.

Click on the back arrow button thrice to go to home page.

Click and show the dropdowns.


Back to the home page.

On the home page, we have the following drop downs.

SIMULATIONS, TEACHING, RESEARCH and ACCESSIBILITY.

click on TEACHING dropdown >> select Browse Activities link.

Point to the Browse Activities page.

Let us click on the TEACHING drop-down and select the Browse Activities link.

Browse Activities page opens.

Point to each list.

Scroll the lists and select based on your requirement.

On this page, we have the following lists.

Simulations, Types, Subjects, Levels and Languages.

Scroll the lists and select based on your requirement.

In the Simulations list, select Bending light.

In the Types list, select Lab.

In the Subjects list, select Physics.

In Levels, select HS.

In Languages, select English.

In the Simulations list, I will select Bending light.

In the Types list, I will select Lab.

In the Subjects list, I will select Physics.

In Levels, I will select high school, HS.

In Languages, I will select English.

Click on the browse button.

Show all the displayed activities.

Click on the TITLE.

Point to the Download link.

Click on the browse button.

Activities related to the simulation will be displayed.

Select the activity by clicking on the TITLE link.

Point to the page.

Point to the activity files.


Point to the compressed .zip file.

A page opens with all the details of the activity.

On the page, links are provided to download the activity files.

Here you can download individual files or all files as a compressed zip file.

Point to the sign-in page. To download the zip file, you need to sign in.

Type the sign-in details if prompted.


If you have already signed in, the sign in window may not appear

Point to the dialog box.


Select Save File radio button.


Point to the OK button.


Click on the OK button.

A dialog box prompting to save the file opens.


Select Save File radio button.


Click on the OK button.


The file downloads to the Downloads folder.

Click on the back arrow. Let us go back to the home page.
Click on the link Tips for Using PhET. Under the TEACHING drop down, click on Tips for Using PhET link.
Point to the page.

Point to the videos on the right side.

A new page opens with videos that explain how to use PhET simulations.

You can explore these videos on your own.

Cursor on the PhET page. Now let us see how to download PhET simulations for offline use.
Scroll down the page.


Click on the OFFLINE ACCESS link.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page.


Click on the OFFLINE ACCESS link.

Point to the three options.


1.Desktop/Laptop Computer

2.Chromebook

3. iPad.

The offline access page opens.

On the page, you can see three options,

1.Desktop/Laptop Computer

2.Chromebook

3. iPad.

Click on the Desktop/Laptop Computer option. Click on the Desktop/Laptop Computer option.
Let us install the full version on Window 10 OS.
Point to Full Install.

Click on the Windows link


Under the Full Install section click on the Windows link
Point to the window. Sign In window appears.
Point to the Sign In window.


Click on the Sign In button.


Click on the SIGN IN button.

In the Sign In window, please sign in using your registered email id and password.


I will enter my Email address and password and click on the SIGN IN button.

Point to the window.


Click on the Save File button.


A window prompting to save the file appears.


In the window click on the Save File button.

Point to the file in the Downloads folder. The file downloads to the Downloads folder.
Right-click on the downloaded file. After downloading, right-click on the downloaded file.
Select Run as Administrator.

Click Yes in the confirmation prompt box.

Select Run as Administrator option.


Click Yes in the confirmation prompt box.

Point to the window.


Point to index of sims window.

Click on the X button to close the window.

Phet Setup window opens showing the Installation process.


Once the installation is complete, the Index of Sims window opens.


Close the window.

Point to the shortcut on the Desktop.

Double-click to open the file.


A shortcut is created on the Desktop to open the Index of Sims window.


Double-click to open the file.

Point to the tabs. In the Index of Sims window, we can see three tabs: HTML5. and JAVA and ALL.
Point to HTML5 tab.


Click on the thumbnail of any simulation.

By default, HTML5 tab is opened.


Click on the thumbnail of any simulation to open and explore.

Point to JAVA and ALL tabs. You can click on the JAVA and ALL tabs and explore yourself.
Cursor on the PhET page. Now we will see how to download the offline version of PhET on Mac OS.
Show the offline access page. Let us go back to the offline access page of PhET.
Click on the Desktop/Laptop Computer option. Here again, I will click on the Desktop/Laptop Computer option.
Point to Full Install section.

Click on the MacOS link.

Under the Full Install section, click on the MacOS link.
Enter the Sign in details.


Click on the Sign In button.

In the Sign in window, please sign with your registered email id and password.


Click on the SIGN IN button.

Point to the file in the Downloads folder. The phet-mac-app.dmg file downloads to the Downloads folder.
Double-click on the dmg file. After the download is complete, double-click on the dmg file.

The installation starts automatically.


If required and prompted give appropriate permissions for installation.

Drag the PhET installer file and put it in the Applications folder. Drag the PhET installer file and put it in the Applications folder.


The PhET installer file is copied to the Applications folder.


The PhET Simulations will now be accessible from the Applications folder.

Double to open the Applications folder.

Point to the PhET logo.


Double-click on the PhET logo.

Open the Applications folder.

Locate the PhET logo.


Double-click on the PhET logo.

Point to the dialog box.

Click on the Open button to open the Index of sims window.

A confirmation dialog box opens


Click on the Open button to open the Index of sims window.

Point to the tabs.

Point to HTML5 tab.

In the Index of Sims window, by default, HTML5 tab is opened.
Click on the thumbnail of any simulation. Click on the thumbnail of any simulation to open and explore.
Point to JAVA and ALL tabs.


Click on JAVA and ALL tabs.

You can click on the JAVA and ALL tabs and explore yourself.
Now let’s see how to download the offline version of PhET on Linux OS.
Show One at a Time Section. For Linux users, there is no link to download the complete list of simulations.


Required simulations can be directly downloaded from One at a Time section.

Scroll down to Greenhouse Effect simulation.


Click on the Java link

As an example, let us download The Greenhouse Effect simulation.


Click on the Java link.

Point to the dialog box. Opening greenhouse_en.jar file dialog box opens.
Select the Save File radio button.

Click on the OK button.

Point to the file in the Downloads folder.

Select the Save File radio button.

Then click on the OK button.

The file downloads to the Downloads folder.

Press Ctrl, Alt and T keys on the keyboard. To open the jar file we need a terminal in Ubuntu.

To open the terminal press Ctrl , Alt and T keys simultaneously.

At the prompt type, cd Downloads and press Enter.

Type java -jar greenhouse_en.jar and press Enter.

Point to the simulation window.

At the prompt type, cd Downloads and press Enter.

Then type java space hyphen jar space greenhouse_en.jar and press Enter.

The Greenhouse Effect simulation opens.

Click Cancel to continue the simulation. Do not close the terminal, it will kill the process.

Click Cancel to continue the simulation.

With this, we come to the end of the tutorial.
