  • Ubuntu Linux OS, version 16.04
  • Marble version 1.12.20
  • FFmpeg and
  • A working Internet connection.

The process demonstrated in this tutorial is identical in
  • Ubuntu Linux OS, version 18.04
  • Marble version 2.2.20.

Code Files


The files used in this tutorial are available in the Code Files link on this tutorial page.

Please download and extract them.

Make a copy and then use them while practising.

I have downloaded and saved the files to my Desktop.
Point on world map file on the Desktop.


Click on Atlas view in the Map view panel.

Point to Atlas view.


Let us first learn to create a map in Marble.

Let us open the default Atlas view.

In Map View panel, click on the down arrow, select Flat View.


Point to the Flat view.

In the Map view panel select Flat View option if not already selected.

Flat view of Atlas is seen on the interface.

Click on the File menu

select Create a New Map option.

Click on the File menu and

select Create a New Map option.

Point on Marble Map Theme Creation Wizard dialogue box.

Select the second radio button A single image showing the whole world.


Click on the Next button.

Marble Map Theme Creation Wizard dialogue box opens.


Select the second radio button A single image showing the whole world.

Click on the Next button in the box.

Click on the 3 dots button and select the desired image of the map.


Point to Open dialog box.

In the box, click on the 3 dots button next to Source Image field.

Open dialog box appears.

Cursor in the dialog box. Select the folder where you have saved your desired map.
Point to the Desktop folder.


Double click on the Desktop folder.

My image file is in the Desktop folder.


Double click on the Desktop folder.

Select oceans-and-seas-map-of-the-world.jpg file.

Point in the dialog box.

Select oceans-and-seas-map-of-the-world.jpg file

We can either use .png or .jpg image files.

Click on the Open button in the dialogue box.

Point to the path to the Source Image field.

Click on the Open button at the bottom right corner of the dialogue box.


Image path is added to the Source Image field.

Click on the Next button in the dialog box. Click on the Next button in the dialog box.
Point to General Information.


In the Map Title field I will type the name as

In the Map Name field type the name as Political Map.

Please read the General Information given at the top.

In the Map Title field I will type the name as World Oceans and Seas.

In the Map Name field type the name as Oceans and Seas.

In the description field, type a short description about this map. In the Description field , I will add a short description about this map.


This description is provided in the code files.

Point o Preview Image. Below the Description field, we can see the Preview Image of the selected map.
Point on Change button.


Point on the window

Click on the Next button.

If you want to change the image click on Change button.


As this is a downloaded map, I don't want to change the image.


I will click on the Next button.

keep Legend image and its components blank.


Click on Next button.

Let us leave the Legend image and its components as default.

Then click on the Next button.

Point on Summary

Point on Map Name, Map theme, and Preview Image.

Read the Summary carefully.


Map Name, Map theme, and Preview Image are seen here.

Click on the Preview Map button next to the preview image.

Point to Preview Map window.

Click on the X button to close.

Click on the Preview Map button.

Preview Map- Marble Virtual Globe window opens.

It shows the preview of the map.

Close the Preview Map window.

Click on the Finish button. Click on the Finish button in the box.


Click on Map view and scroll down.


Point to World Oceans and Seas.

Go to the Map View panel and scroll down.

World Oceans and Seas map is saved in the Map View panel.

Point to Description on the map. Here you can see the description that is added while creating this map.
Click on the map to open it. Let us open this map.
Point to the map.


Right click on World Oceans and Seas map.

Select Delete Map Theme option.

Now I will show how to delete this map from the interface.

Go to World Oceans and Seas in the Map View panel and right-click on it.

Select Delete Map Theme option.

Point on the message box asking Are you sure that you want to delete the map.


Click on Yes button.

Point to map view panel.

A message: Are you sure that you want to deleteWorld Oceans and Seas” ? appears.

Click on the Yes button in the box. This map is deleted from the Map view panel.

Next we will learn how to copy a map from Marble to other documents.


Cursor on the map. For example, I will copy the Satellite view of the world to a document.
Go to Map View panel, select Satellite View. Go to Map View panel and select Satellite View.
Right-click on Overview map.

From the context menu, select Hide.


I will hide Overviewmap, Compass, Windrose and Scale Bar for a better view.
Click on the Edit menu and select Copy Map option. Go to the Edit menu and select Copy Map option.
Open a Libreoffice document in the system. I have opened a Libreoffice Writer document in my system.
Paste this map by pressing Ctrl + V keys.


Point to the image.

To paste this map in the document press Ctrl and V keys together.


Satellite View of the world map is copied to the document as an image.

Drag to resize the image. We can resize the image by dragging the handles.


Click on File and select Save a copy . Now we will save this document.

Click on File and select Save option.

Point to the dialogue box.


In the Name field, type the name as Satellite-view.odt.

Save dialogue box opens.

Select desktop folder to save the file

In the Name field, type the name as Satellite-view.odt

Click on the Save button in the box.


Click on the Save button at the bottom of the dialog box.
Point to the document.

Double-click to open the file.

This is the saved document Satellite-view.odt

Double-click on it to open the file.

Assignment

An assignment for you,

Create a world map showing climate zones of the world.

Hint: Climate Zones map is available in the Code files link.

Point to the interface. Next let us learn to record a movie in Marble.


Before we start the recording, we have to set a theme for it.

Select Earth at Night view from the Map View panel.


Click on Earth at Night view from the Map View panel.

I will choose Earth at Night view to record a movie.


Click on Earth at Night view from the Map View panel.

Click on the Globe View. Click on the Globe View to see the virtual globe.

FFmpeg

To record a movie in Marble, FFmpeg software is required.


  • FFmpeg is a collection of libraries and tools to process multimedia.
  • FFmpeg is a free and open source software.
  • It handles video, audio, and other multimedia files and streams.

I have download FFMpeg software to my system.

Go to the Edit menu and select the Record movie option. To record a movie, go to the Edit menu and select Record Movie option.
Point to Movie Recording – Marble dialog box. Movie Recording – Marble dialog box opens on the interface.
Click on the Open button in the dialog box.

Point to Save video file dialog box.

Click on the Open button in the dialog box.

Save video file dialog box opens.

Choose the Desktop folder as a destination. I will select the Desktop folder as the destination.
In the File name field type the name as Earth-at-Night.mp4.


Select the Files of type as MPEG-4(*.mp4)

Click on Save button in the box

In the File name field type the name as Earth-at-Night.mp4


Select the Files of type as MPEG-4.

Click on Save button in the box.

Point to the Fps up down arrow button. Here we see Fps up and down arrow button.

FPS

What is FPS?

FPS is frames per second.

It shows how many unique consecutive images a camera can handle in each second.

Keep the value as 30.

Point to the Save video file dailog box.

We can change the FPS value between 1 and 60.

I will keep the value as 30.

Once everything is set, we can start recordi ng.

Click on the Start button To start recording, I will click on the Start button.
Point to the map.

Rotate the map to see different continents.


Earth at Night map view shows the Earth’s city lights.

These lights are visible at night on the Earth's surface.

Let us rotate the globe to see different continents.

Point to brighter areas on the map. The brightest areas of the Earth are the most populated areas.
Point to darker region, sea Since there is no human population, oceans and seas look completely dark.
Go to the Edit menu.

Select Stop Recording option.

Now we have completed our recording.

Let us go to the menu and s elect Stop recording option.

Go to the Desktop folder.

Point to the Earth-at-Night.mp4 file.

Now let us check our saved video.


Go to the Desktop folder.

Earth-at-Night.mp4 file is saved on the Desktop.

Double click to open the file.

Point to the video.

Click on the Close button.

Let us open this file.

We can see that Earth at night view has been captured.

Let us close this file.

Let us summarize.
