To record this tutorial, I am using,


  • Ubuntu Linux OS version 16.04
  • Marble version 1.12.20
    A working Internet connection.

The process demonstrated in this tutorial is identical in

  • Ubuntu Linux OS version 18.04
  • Marble version 2.2.20

The files used in this tutorial are available in theCode Files link on this tutorial page.

Please download and extract them.

Make a copy and then use them while practising.

Cursor on theDesktop. I have downloaded and saved the files to myDesktop.

Configuration

Let us first see what is configuartion.


  • Configuration means arranging elements in a particular form.
  • Itcreates adifferent appearanceof theinterface.
From the dropdown button select flat view option. I have opened theMarble interface in the default Atlas view.
Go the Settings menu.

Click on the Configure Marble Virtual Globe option

Configure Marble Virtual Globe window opens.

Drag and place Configure window to left of the interface.


Let us go the Settings menu.

Click on Configure Marble Virtual Globe option.

Configure window opens.

Let us place the Configure window to the left of the interface.

Point to the 2 panels.

Point to the right panel and differnt options

The Configure window has two panels.

Left panel has diffe rent menus.

Right panel has different options for the corresponding menu.

Click on the Navigation option. Click on Navigation.

Navigation menu opens in the right panel.

Point to Dragging and Animation.

Point to Inertial Globe Rotation and Animate Voyage to the taget.

Under Dragging and Animation we have two checkboxes.

Inertial Globe R otation and Animate Voyage to the target.

Point to Inertial Globe Rotation Inertial Globe Rotation is checked by default.

Inertial Globe Rotation enables kinetic spinning of the globe while dragging.

I will move the configure window to see the interface clearly.

Rotate the globe by dragging. Let us rotate the globe. Notice that globe is moving freely.
Un-check Inertial Globe Rotation check box.


Click on the Apply button in the box.

Let us uncheck the box to stop free spinning of the globe.


Click on the Apply button in the box.

Point to Animate voyage to the target option. You can check Animate voyage to the target option on your own.

I will move the configure window back to its place.

Click on the Date and Time. Next click on Date & Time.

Date & Time menu opens in the right panel.

Point to Time zone and When Marble starts. Here, you can choose a date and time.

This menu has two sections.

Time zone and When Marble starts.

Point to Time zone. Under Time zone, System time zone is selected by default.

This means Marble shows the time which is set in the system.

Click on the click on the Choose time zone option. To set other time zones, Choose Time zone option.
Point to Universal Time Coordianted drop-down

Click on the up down arrow button .

From the list we can select any of the time zones.

Universal Time Coordinated drop-down button becomes active.

Click on the up down arrow button.

From the list we can select any one of the time zones.

Click on the System time zone radio button. Now click on the System time zone radio button to show the system time.


Click on the Plugins tab.

Point to different plugins.

Next let us click on Plugins.

Different plugins available in Marble are shown in the Plugins menu.

Plugins

Plugins are introduced by developers and other independent users.

Plugins help to create new features on the interface

Point to the scroll bar at the right side of this page.

Scroll down to the bottom to see all plugins available.

In the Plugins menu we can see a scroll bar at the right side of this window.

Let us scroll down to the bottom to see all the available plugins.

Point to the check box on the left.

Check or uncheck the box to activate or deactivate it.

Point to the activated checkboxes.

Each plugin can be activated or deactivated using the check box on the left.

Observe that all the plugins are activated by default.

Point to different plugins.

Point to the Configure button against the plugin.

Notice that some plugins are provided with a Configure button on the right side.

It means that these plugins can be further configured.

The plugins that do not have aConfigure button cannot be configured further.

Go the Compass plugin.

Click on the configure button corresponding to Compass plugin.

Now let us go the Compass plugin.

Click on the Configure button corresponding to Compass plugin.


Point to Configure Compass Plugin window .

Click on,

Default, Arrows, Atom, Magnet.

Configure Compass Plugin window opens.


Window shows 4 Themes for compass.

Default, Arrows, Atom, Magnet.

Point to the default theme for compass.

Now i will select Arrows theme.

Click on the Apply button, then click on the OK button.

By default, Default theme is selected.

Now I will select Arrows theme.

Click on the Apply button, and then click on the OK button.

Point to the compass on the interface. Observe that theme for compass has changed to Arrows.
Scroll down and locate Overviewmap.


Click on the configure button corresponding to Overview Map.


Dialog box opens on the screen.

Now let us scroll down and locate Overview Map plugin.


Click on the Configure button corresponding to Overview Map.


Dialog box opens on the screen.

Point to map image.


Point to the rectangular button.

Under Map Image, Planet Earth is selected by default.


Below Planet we can see a rectangular button.

Point to Preview section.

Click on th Preview map.

Now we will change the default Overview map with a different map.


Preview of the default map is shown in the Preview section along with the path.


Click on the Preview map.

The Preview map is shown on the rectangular button.

Click on the button, Choose Overview Map dialog box opens.

Point to the dialog box.


Click on the button.

Choose Overview Map – Marble Virtual Globe dialog box opens.


Here we can select a map to replace the default overview map.

World-physical-map.svg file is provided in the Code files link.
Point to the Desktop.

Double click on the Desktop folder .

My file is saved in the Desktop folder.


Double click on the Desktop folder.

Point to the Files of Type.

Point to SVG.

select World-physical-map.svg file.

The allowed file format is only .svg.


select World-physical-map.svg file.

Cursor in the window. Sometimes on clicking the Open button, Marble application may close automatically.


This is because Marble is not configured before to change the Overview map.


Click on the Open button in the dialog box. Click on the Open button in the dialog box.
Point to the worldphysical map.

Click on the Apply button.

World physical map is shown as a preview on the button.

Click on the Apply button to see the changed overview map.

Point to the two dropdown buttons corresponding to size.

Click on the up arrow button to increase the size.

we can adjust the size of Overview map using the Size drop down button.


Click on the arrow button to increase or decrease the size of overview map.

Click on the Apply button.

Notice the change in the size of the overview map.

Click on the Apply button to see the changes in the size of the overview map.
Point to Colors option. Under Colors, we have Position Indicator.
Click on the button next to Position indicator.


Point to Colour window .

From the colour box, select red colour.

Click on the OK button in the color box.

Click on the button ne xt to Position indicator.


Color window opens on the screen.

From the colour box, I will select red colour.


Click on the OK button in the color box.

Click on the Apply button.

click on the OK button in the dialog box.


Point to the position indicator


Click on the Apply button in the box.

Then click on the OK button in the dialog box.


Observe the change in colour of the Position Indicator.


Click on OK button in the Configure window.


Click on OK button in the Configure window.

Observe all the applied changes.
