00:19 To record this tutorial, I am using,
00:21 Ubuntu Linux OS, version 16.04

Marble version 1.12.20 and

00:30 A working Internet connection.
00:33 The process demonstrated in this tutorial is identical in,

Ubuntu Linux OS, version 18.04

00:42 Marble version 2.2.20
00:47 To practise this tutorial, learners should be familiar with the Marble interface.

00:58 The files used in this tutorial are available in the Code Files link on this tutorial page.
01:04 Please download and extract them.
01:07 Make a copy and then use them while practising.
01:11 I have downloaded and saved the files to my Desktop.
01:16 I have opened the Marble interface in the OpenStreetMap view.
01:21 I will select Flat view option from the Mapview panel.
01:26 Let us go to the View menu and click on it.
01:30 Select Info Boxes and from the sub-menu click on the Elevation Profile option.
01:37 A box with a message appears.
01:39 Create a route or load a track from the file to view its elevation profile.
01:46 Elevation Profile shows the altitude of a route.
01:49 It helps to analyze the height of the hills and landforms.
01:54 I will place the box at a convenient location.
01:58 I have created a route and its track from Mumbai to Vadodara on the map.
02:04 Route hyphen 2 dot kml file is given in the code files link of this tutorial.
02:10 To open the file, right-click on it and select the option Open with Marble.
02:16 I have opened my route in the OpenStreetMap Flat view.
02:21 Place the mouse cursor inside the rectangular box.
02:24 Hover the mouse inside the box.
02:28 We can see the altitude of different places appearing on the route.
02:33 Let us hide this Elevation Profile box.
02:37 Right click on the box.
02:39 From the context menu select Hide option to hide it.
02:44 Let us learn about the gps information available in Marble.
02:49 Let us open the track of the existing route.
02:53 Go to the Location panel.

Click on the drop down button below Position Tracking.

02:59 Select Current Route option.
03:02 Go to the View menu and select Info Boxes.
03:06 From the submenu select GpsInfo option.
03:10 A box with gps information appears on the left side of the interface.
03:16 Notice the change in speed, and direction.
03:20 Now let us hide this box.
03:23 Right click on the box, select Hide option from the context menu.
03:29 Now we will disable the position tracking and close the route map.
03:34 As an assignment,
03:35 Explore the following options, Redisplay, Speedometer and Routing.
03:42 Now we will learn about the concept of day and night.
03:46 Let us zoom out to see the default view.
03:50 Go to Map view panel and select Globe view.
03:54 Go to the View menu and select, Sun Control option.
03:59 Sun Control dialog box opens.
04:02 I will place this dialog box to the left side of the interface.
04:07 Check the Sun Shading check box.
04:10 Select the Shadow radio button if not already selected.
04:15 Click on the Apply button.
04:18 Rotate and observe that globe turns into a day night mode.
04:24 Under Subsolar Point, check Display Subsolar Point icon check box.

Click on the Apply button.

04:37 Subsolar point is displayed on the globe.
04:40 Notice that portion facing the sun experiences day.
04:44 The other half away from the Sun experiences night.
04:49 In the dark portion we can see the Moon.
04:53 At any moment, half of the world is in daytime and half is in night time.
04:58 Now let us remove this subsolar point from the globe.
05:03 Go to the view menu and select Sun Control option.
05:08 In the Sun Control dialog box, uncheck the Sun shading check box.
05:14 Then uncheck Display Subsolar Point icon checkbox.
05:20 Click on the Apply button.
05:23 Click on the OK button in the box.
05:26 The Subsolar point is not visible on the globe.
05:31 As as assignment,

05:36 Go back to the Atlas view.
05:39 Again go to the View menu and click on Online Services option.
05:45 These plugins display georeferenced Wikipedia articles as icons on the map.
05:52 In this version of Marble only Photos and Satellites plugins are enabled.
05:57 Click on the Photos plugin.
06:01 Notice that different photos appear on the globe.
06:05 Let us rotate the globe to see the various photos across the globe.
06:10 Let us zoom in and locate India on the globe.
06:14 When we zoom in more photos appear.
06:18 I will click on one of the photos.
06:21 It opens with a Flickr photo sharing site.
06:25 Flickr is a popular image and video hosting service used by photographers.
06:31 The photo which I have selected is of Victoria Terminus.
06:35 We can see the name of the person who had shared this photo.
06:38 Let us close this flickr site.
06:42 The photos on the map were shared by people who had visited the place.
06:46 Let us zoom out and go back to the default view.
06:51 I will disable the Photos plugin.
06:54 Go to the View menu and select Online Services option.
06:59 Then click on Photos plugin to hide the photos from the map.
07:04 Go to Map View panel and select Satellite view.
07:08 Satellite view is seen.
07:11 Then go to the view menu and click on Atmosphere.
07:16 We can see that a white layer has formed around the earth.
07:21 It shows the diffused reflection of the atmosphere around the Earth.
07:26 Go to View menu and select Clouds option.
07:30 We can see that the clouds have appeared on the globe.
