System Requirements

To record this tutorial, I am using;
  • Ubuntu Linux OS version 16.04
  • Marble version 1.8.3.

The process demonstrated in this tutorial is identical in-

  • Ubuntu Linux OS version 18.04
  • Marble version 2.2.20 and
  • A working internet connection.

To practise this tutorial, learner should be familiar with Marble interface.


For the prerequisite Marble tutorials, please visit this site.

Cursor on the Marble interface. We will learn how to export a map for future reference.
Mapview> OpenStreetMap We will export a map of India with different states.


For this we will use OpenStreetMap from the Map View.

Click on OpenStreetMap.

Click on the drop-down button next to Globe view >> select Flat view option. For a better view, I will select Flat view option from the drop-down menu.
Zoom in and locate India. Zoom in and locate India on the map.
Place the cursor to the left of this window. I will move and place the wind rose in a convenient location.
Point on Overview Map, Compass, Wind-rose and Scale bar Let us first hide Overview Map, Compass, Scale bar and Wind-rose for better view of the map.
Right-click on the Overview map.

Point on Context menu.

Click on Hide option.

Right-click on the Overview map.


A context menu opens.

Select Hide option from the menu.


Overview map is hidden from the interface.

Right click on the Compass>> Click on Hide

Right-click on the Wind-rose >> Click on Hide

Right click on the Scale bar >> Click on Hide

Similarly I will hide Compass, Scale bar and Wind-rose from the interface.
Next let us hide latitudes and longitudes.
Click on Legend panel

Uncheck Coordinate Grid checkbox.

Go to Legend panel and uncheck Coordinate Grid checkbox.
On the menu bar >> click on the File menu>> Export map option. Click on the File menu.

Select Export Map option.

Point on Export map- Marble virtual Globe dialog box Export Map dialog box opens.
Cursor on the window. Select a location to save the file.
Select Desktopfolder I will select the Desktop folder.
Point on text box >> type the name India-map.png

Point to the extensions.

In the File name field, type the file name as India hyphen map dot png.


We can export the map in dot png or dot jpg formats.

Click on Save button. Click on the Save button at the bottom of the dialog box.
Go to Desktop folder Let us open the exported map.

Go to the Desktop folder.

Point on the India-map.png file in theDesktop. Here we can see India hyphen map dot png file.
Double click on India-map.png file.

Click on the close button.

Let us double-click to open this file.

Click on the close button to close the file.

Cursor on the map view. Let us go back to the Marble interface with the same map view.
Next, we will learn how to print maps in Marble.


Let us learn about Print Preview option before printing the maps.

Click on the File menu.

Select Print Preview option.

Click on the File menu and select Print Preview option.

Point on the Toolbar of the Print Preview.


Point to Fit width, Fit page, Zoom In, Zoom Out, Portrait, Landscape, First-page Previous page, Next page, Last page.

The toolbar of the Preview window shows various options.
Click on the close button. I will close this Preview window.
Click on the File menu in the menu bar and then select Print. Now we will see how to take printouts.


Click on the File menu and select Print option.

Point to Print dialog box. The Print dialog box appears on the interface.
Click on the Options button button in the dialog box.


Let us click on the Options button in the dialog box.

The options in this window are the standard print options.

If you have configured your printer correctly then your map will start printing.

Click on the Marble tab. Click on the Marble tab.

In this tab we can select the check-boxes to display various options on the map.

Point to Visible Globe Region >> point to Outer Space and Legend check-boxes


Visible Globe Region is selected by default.


We can check Outer Space and Legend check-boxes as required.

Click on the 3 dots button next to output file.

Point to Print to file dialog box.

Let us print a map to a file.

Click on the 3 dots button next to output file.


Print to file dialog box open on the interface.

Double click on Desktop folder.

Click on the Save button

Select a location to save the file.

I will select Desktop folder.


Click on the Save button

Click on the Print button. Click on the Print button.

Our document is saved on the Desktop as a pdf file.

Point to Print.pdf


Let us go to the Desktop folder.

Print dot pdf file is saved on the Desktop.

Le us double-click to open this file.

Click on the close button. Click on the close button to close this file.

Assignment

An assignment for you.
  • Export the political map of Africa in the dot png format.
  • Hint: Use Flat view option.
Click on Globe view.

Check Coordinate grid checkbox >> then go to Map View and select Atlas view.

Let us go back to the default view.

Check Coordinate grid checkbox.

Then go to Map View and select Atlas view.

Click on the Globe view button. Click on the Globe view button.
Zoom in and go back to the default view. Let us zoom out and go back to the default view.
Next we will learn how to download maps in Marble.

Internet connectivity is required to download a map.

Point on File menu, click Download Maps option. To download maps, go to File menu and select Download Maps option.

Shortcut key to download map is Ctrl+N.

Point to the Marble Install window appeared on the screen. Marble - Install Maps window opens on the interface with various maps.
Point to the scroll bar.


Scrolling down and shows that different maps available to download.

There is a scroll bar on the right side of this window.


Let us scroll down to see different maps that are available for download.

Point on a short description. A short description about each map is given along with its view.
Point on the Author, License and Version of that particular map. Below the description, we can see Author, License and Version for that particular map.
Point to Install button with a tick mark. On the right side of each map, we can see an Install button with a tick mark.

Click on the Install button.

From the list of maps I will select Natural Earth III map for downloading.

Click on the Install button corresponding to Natural Earth III map.

Cursor on the progress bar. We see that Install button is replaced by a progress bar.


It will take a few seconds to download depending on the internet connectivity.

Scroll down to show the maps of other celestial bodies. Apart from the maps of Earth, we also have maps of other celestial bodies.
Click button of the Mercury map. Now I will download the map of Mercury.
Point on the Cancel button. If you wish to cancel the installation, click on the Cancel button.
Click on the Close button at the bottom of this window. After downloading click on the Close button at the bottom of this window.
Go to Map View and scroll down. Go to Map View and scroll down.
Point to the Natural Earth III map is saved in the Map view panel. We can see that Natural Earth III map is saved in the Map View panel.
Click on Natural Earth III map.

Point on theNatural Earth III opened on the interface.

Click on Natural Earth III map.

Natural Earth III map opens on the interface.

Point on the interface. We have also downloaded the map of Mercury.
Click on the Earth drop down button. As Mercury is a planet, it is saved in the Earth drop-down button.

Let us go to Earth drop-down button and click on it.

Click on Mercury option.


Point on Mercury Map.

Observe that Mercury is added to this drop-down.


Click on Mercury. Globe view of Mercury opens.
