Marble version 1.12.20 and

The process demonstrated in this tutorial is identical in

Ubuntu Linux OS, version 18.04

For the prerequisite Marble tutorials, please visit this site.


I have opened the Marble interface.
Click on theOpenStreetMapview

Zoom in.

Point on our home locationMumbai.


Right click on Overviewmap.

From the context menu selectHide option.

Right click on Compass.

From the context menu selectHide option.

Right click on Scale bar.

From the context menu selectHide option.


Go to dropdown button andselectFlat view option.

Go to Map View and select OpenStreetMap .



I will hide Overview map, Compass and Scale bar for better view of the map.


I will select Flat view option from the dropdown.

Let us hide latitudes and longitudes for better visibility of the map.

Go to the Legend panel and uncheck Coordinate Grid check box.



Click on theSettingsmenu and select Panels.


From the sub-menu chooseEdit Maps option.


Point toEdit Maps panel .


Let us make theEdit Maps panel visible, if it is not seen on the interface.


Click on the Settings menu and select Panels .


From the sub-menu, select Edit Maps option.


Point on Edit Maps panel and click on it

Point onAdd Placemark, Add polygon, Add path, AddGroundoverlayand others.

In theEdit Mapspanel we see some icons.

Zoom in and pointIIT Bombay on the map

Let us first learn to add a placemark on the map.


Let us go to our Home location Mumbai.

We will add a placemark on the location of IIT Bombay.

Zoom in and locate IIT Bombay.

Click on Add Placemarkoption.

Point onEdit Placemarkdialogue box

Go toEdit Mapspanel and click on Add Placemark icon .

Edit Placemark dialogue box opens on the interface.


In the Name field type the name asIIT Bombay.


In the Name field type the name asIIT Bombay.


Under Label click on the Color button. Point on Select colour window.


From the colour box, select dark blue colour.


Click on the OK button in the window.

Under Label click on the Color button. Select colour window opens.


From the colour box, I will select dark blue colour.


Click on the OK button in the window.

In the Description field, type the information given in the code files link.


Click on the Description tab.


In theDescription field, I will add some information about IIT Bombay.


The information about IIT Bombay is provided in the Code files link.


Check Show Balloon popup checkbox.

Click on the OK button at the bottom of the Edit Placement dialogue box. Click on the OK button at the bottom of the Edit Placemark dialogue box.
Point on the location ofIIT Bombayin the map. Now we can see a placemark at the location of IIT Bombay.
Click on its label. Click on its label.
Point on Place Information data sheet.

Point on theshort description.


Click on the close button.

Place Information data sheet opens.

In the short description, information added in theDescription field is shown.

Let us close this sheet.

Type the name as Kerala in the Name field.

Drag the dialogue box to the side of the interface. Let us re-size and place the dialogue box to the left side of the interface.
Click onStyle ,Coloroption.


Select red colour forLinesand click the OK button.


Select blue colour forAreaand click the OK button.

Click onStyle, Color tab.

Let us select colours forLinesandAreaof the polygon.


Click on the colour button.


Select color window opens.


From the colour box I will select red colour forLines

Click the OK button.


Point on theWidth dropdown button.


Choose the line width as 1.5.


We see a Width dropdown button .

We can select the line width here. I will choose the line width as 1.5.


Click on the color button under Area.

Select colour window opens.

From the color box,I will select magenta forArea.

click on the OK button.

Click onNodes option.


Let us resize and place the dailog box to the left side of the interface.

Now click onNodes tab.

Node

Node is a point on the map.

It specifies the longitude and latitude of a particular place.


Let us now start marking Nodes to draw a polygon on the area of Kerala.
Give nodes on the border of Kerala.


Point on the dark blue color on the map.


To mark the area with nodes, click anywhere on the boundary of kerala.

keep clicking all along the boundary to complete the full area of Kerala.


Mark nodes in the full area .

Point on the polygon area in the map

Let us complete the full area of kerala.


Click on the OK button.

Point on Kerala on the map.

Click on the OK button.

After marking the nodes Kerala appears as magenta colour .

Highlight Karnataka state using the Add polygon option.

Point to the Add path icon.


Next icon isAdd path.

If we wish to add some lines or path on the map we can use Add path tool.


We will add a path from Pune to Solapur on the map.

Point toAdd path dialog box.


Click on Add Path icon.

Add path dialog box opens on the interface.

In theName field I will type the name as Path-1.


Click on theColorbutton under Lines.

From theColorwindow select blue colour.


Next we will select colur and width for our path.


Click on the Color button under Lines.

From the Color window I will select blue colour.



Click on the Width dropdown button and choose 1.5.


Next we will select' Color'andWidthfor our path .

Click on the color button under Lines.



From the colour window I will select blue colour.


Click on the Width dropdown button.

I will choose the color width as 1.5.


Click on theNodestab in the dialog box

move this window to a convenient location.

Start marking the nodes one by one.


Click on theNodes tab in the dialog box.


I will drag and place this dialog box in a convenient location.


Then startmarking thenodes one by one from Pune to Solapur.

Click on the OK button in the Add path dialog box.


Point on the path or line is formed in the main gate road on the map.


After completing the path click on theOKbutton in theAdd Path dialog box.


Notice that a path is marked from Pune to Solapur on the map.


Click on theSave Annotation FIleicon.

Let us save all the annotations we have made on this map.


Click on theSave Annotation FIleicon.


Point to Save Annotation FIle dialog box .


Double click on the Desktop.

Save Annotation FIle dialog box opens on the interface.


Select a location to save the file.

I will select Desktopfolder.


In the File name field type the name asAnnotation-1.kml.

Cursor onFiles of Type dropdown.


Click on theOKbutton at the bottom of the dialog box.

In theFile namefield type the name asAnnotation-1.kml.

Please note that file format should be.kmlor .osm.


Click on the Save button at the bottom of the dialog box.

Go to theDesktop folder.

Point to Annotation-1.kml on theDesktop.


Let us check our annotation file.


I will close this Marble application.

Go to theDesktop folder.


Annotation-1.kml is saved on theDesktop.


Right-click on the file.

Select the optionOpen with KDE Marble.

Point to all the annotations.

To open the file, right-click on the file.


From the context menu select theOpen with KDE Marble option.

Notice that all annotations made on the map have been saved in this file.


We will learn more about edit maps in the upcoming tutorials.
