Time Narration
00:01 Hello and welcome to this spoken tutorial on Desktop Customization in Ubuntu Linux 16.04 operating system.
00:11 In this tutorial, we will learn about the Launcher and how to:

remove and add applications in the Launcher,

00:21 Use multiple Desktops,

change the theme of the Desktop,

00:27 internet connectivity, Sound settings,
00:32 Time and Date settings and switch to other user accounts.
00:39 For this tutorial, I am using Ubuntu Linux 16.04 Operating System.
00:46 Let's begin with the Launcher.
00:49 Launcher is the default left-side panel in the Ubuntu Linux Desktop

which has some default applications.

00:59 The Launcher makes it easy to access frequently used applications.
01:05 So, we can launch a program by clicking on its desktop shortcut on the Launcher.
01:12 By default, the Launcher has some applications.
01:17 Let us learn to customize the Launcher based on our requirements.
01:22 For my regular work, I need applications like Terminal, LibreOffice Writer, gedit and so on.
01:34 Let's add these applications to the Launcher.
01:38 Before doing that, I will remove some of the applications which I don't want.
01:44 Say, I wish to remove the Amazon application from the Launcher.
01:49 Go to the Amazon application icon, then right-click and select Unlock from Launcher.
01:58 You can see that the Amazon application icon has been removed from the Launcher.
02:04 In the same way, we can remove all the shortcuts which we do not use frequently.
02:11 I have removed some applications from the Launcher, as you can see here.
02:17 Now, I will add the Terminal shortcut to the Launcher.
02:22 Click on Dash home, at the top of the Launcher.
02:26 In the search bar, type “terminal”.

Click on the Terminal icon to open it.

02:34 You can see the Terminal icon on the Launcher.
02:38 To fix the Terminal icon on the Launcher, first right-click on it.

Then select Lock to Launcher.

02:47 Another way to fix application shortcuts on the Launcher, is by dragging and dropping.

I will demonstrate this now.

02:57 Open Dash Home and in the search bar, type gedit.
03:03 Drag the gedit icon onto the Launcher.
03:07 Now, drop the gedit icon on the Launcher.

You can see the gedit shortcut is now added to the Launcher.

03:16 This is how we can add shortcuts on the Launcher.
03:21 The next important feature in Ubuntu Linux OS is multiple workspace or Desktop.
03:28 Sometimes we may be working on multiple applications
03:33 and we may find it difficult to switch from one application to another.
03:38 To make it more convenient, we can use Workspace Switcher.
03:42 Let’s come back to the Desktop.
03:45 In Ubuntu 16.04, multiple workspaces won’t appear by default.
03:51 To enable it, click on the System Settings,

and then on Appearance.

03:58 In the Appearance window, click on Behavior tab.
04:02 Here, select Enable workspaces option.

This will enable the multiple workspaces icon on the Launcher.

04:11 Close this window.
04:13 On the Launcher, locate Workspace Switcher icon and click on it.
04:19 It shows 4 quadrants with 4 Desktops.
04:24 By default, the top-left Desktop is selected.
04:29 That is the Desktop in which we are currently working.
04:34 Now, let’s select the second Desktop by double-clicking on it.
04:39 I will open the terminal here by clicking on the terminal icon in the Launcher.
04:45 Now, click on the Workspace Switcher again.
04:49 You can see the terminal on the second Workspace and our Desktop on the first.
04:55 In this way, you can work on multiple Desktops.
04:59 Let’s come back to the first Desktop now.
05:03 Trash is another important icon on the Launcher.
05:07 Trash contains all the deleted files and folders.

In case we delete a file accidentally, we can restore it from Trash.

05:17 To demonstrate this, I will delete Hello.txt which is on my Desktop.
05:23 Right-click on the file and click on the option Move to Trash.
05:29 To restore it, just click on the Trash icon in the Launcher.

The Trash folder opens.

05:37 Select the file, right-click on it and click on Restore option.
05:43 Close the Trash folder window and come back to the Desktop.
05:48 We can see the file which we deleted earlier, is now restored.
05:53 To delete a file permanently from your system, first select it and then press Shift+Delete keys.
06:01 A dialog box is asking “Are you sure you want to permanently delete Hello.txt?

Click on the Delete button.

06:12 Click on the Trash icon once again.
06:15 We cannot find the file in the Trash folder, as it is permanently deleted from our system.
06:23 Aren't you bored of seeing the same theme of the Desktop?

Let's change it.

06:28 Go to the Launcher and select System settings,

and then click on Appearance.

06:35 The Appearance window opens up.
06:38 Here, under Themes tab, we have many pre-installed themes.
06:44 Play with these themes as per your preference.
06:47 As soon as you click on any one, you can see that changes get applied on the Desktop.
06:54 Click on the tiny X icon to close the window.
06:58 Now, we'll see some icons available at the top right corner of the Desktop.
07:04 First one is Internet connectivity.
07:07 Connection is established if you are connected to any Lan or Wifi network.
07:13 You can see these over here.
07:16 You can select the network which you have access to.
07:20 To Enable or Disable the network, check or uncheck the Enable Networking option.
07:27 We can also edit the networks using Edit Connections option.
07:32 Next icon is that of Sound.
07:35 You can see a slider here.
07:37 This helps us to increase or decrease the audio level, as per our choice.
07:43 We can further adjust the sound level of our system by clicking on Sound Settings.

Explore the settings in this window on your own.

07:53 Next icon is Time & Date.

If we click on this icon, the calendar opens up.

08:00 We can see the current date, month and year.
08:04 Arrow buttons allow us to move to other months and years, as per our choice.
08:11 We can edit the date and time by clicking on Time & Date Settings.
08:16 Explore this option further on your own.
08:20 Next, click on the wheel or Power icon.
08:24 Here we can see some shortcut options along with Log Out and Shut Down options.
08:31 We can also see all the user accounts available in our system.
08:36 We can switch to whichever user account we wish to by clicking on that particular user.
08:43 With this we come to the end of this tutorial.

Let us summarise.

08:48 In this tutorial, we have learnt about the Launcher and how to:

remove and add applications in the Launcher,

08:55 use multiple Desktops,

changing the Desktop theme,

09:01 Internet connectivity,

Sound settings,

09:04 Time & Date settings and switch to other user accounts.
09:10 The video at the following link summarises the Spoken Tutorial project.
