In this tutorial, we will learn how to use the Ubuntu Software Centre, to download, install, update and uninstall software on the Ubuntu Operating System.

Allows you to manage software You can search, download, install, update or uninstall software. Lists reviews and ratings for software This way you have information about the software even before you use it. Keeps a record of the software history.

What is Ubuntu Software Centre? It is a tool that allows you to manage software on the Ubuntu OS. You can use it to search, download, install, update or uninstall a software. Ubuntu Software Centre also lists reviews and ratings for each software; this way you have information about the software even before you use it. It also keeps a record of the software history.

Systems Requirements Ubuntu Software Centre on Ubuntu version 11.10.

In this spoken-tutorial, we are using Ubuntu Software Centre on Ubuntu version 11.10.

Pre-requisites An active Internet connection. You must have Administrator rights to install software.

To proceed with the tutorial,

You must be connected to the Internet. You need to be a System Administrator or have Administrator rights to install software.

Switch to Ubuntu.

From the Launcher, which appears as a vertical bar on the left hand side on your desktop, click Ubuntu Software Centre.(you need to hover your mouse, USC icons is placed in sixth position from top. just under LIbreOffice Impress Icon)

From your Launcher, click the Ubuntu Software Centre icon.

The Ubuntu Software Centre window appears.


Click on All Software, Installed and History button one by one which appears on top-left of Ubuntu Software Center Window. The All Software, Installed and History buttons are displayed at the top left of the window.
Point to the Search field. The Search field is displayed at the top-right corner.
Now click on All software Button The Ubuntu Software Centre window is divided into two Panels.
Point to the left panel and move the cursor through the list of software. The left panel displays the list of software categories.
Point to the right panel and move the cursor through the list of software. The right panel displays What’s New and Top Rated.
Point to What’s New pane. The What’s New panel lists the software that has been newly released.
Point to Top Rated Software pane. The Top Rated panel displays the list of software that have a high user rating and are downloaded most frequently.
Point to the left panel. Let’s browse for software by category.
Click on Internet. From the left panel, click on Internet.
Point to the right panel. A list of Internet software and top rated software for the category Internet are displayed.
Point to any software with the tick mark. Notice, that some of the software has a circle with a tick mark.

This indicates that the software has already been installed in your computer.

Point to the “>>” icon.

Click on it.

To view more software in the Internet category, click the All icon.
Point to the other software that is listed on the window. All software, that is available for the category Internet, is listed on the window.
Click on the drop-down at the top right corner. You can also sort the software By Name, By Top Rated or By Newest First.
Let’s click the drop-down on the top-right corner.

From the list, select By Top Rated. The Internet software is arranged in the order of ratings.

Click the Installed button on the top left of the window. To view the complete list of software that is installed in your computer, click the Installed button.
Point to the list of software displayed. The software category is displayed.
Click on small triangular button in front of Sound and Video. Click on small triangular button in front of Sound and Video.
Point to the list displayed. The list of software, installed on your computer, for Sound and Video, is displayed.
Click on All Software >> from the drop-down, select Provided by Ubuntu.

Point to the software listed on the window.

Let’s click on All Software and from the drop-down, select Provided by Ubuntu.

All the softwares, Provided by Ubuntu are listed.

Now, let’s install the software VLC media player.
Switch to Ubuntu Software Centre.
In the Search box in the top-right of the window, type VLC. In the Search box in the top-right of the window, type VLC.
A list related to your search will be displayed VLC media player is displayed.
Now, click Install. Now, click Install.
Point to the Authentication dialog box. The Authentication dialog box appears.
Enter the system password.

Click Authenticate.

Enter your sudo password.

Click Authenticate.

Point to the progress bar. Look at the progress bar that indicates that VLC is being installed.

Installation may take a while depending on the number and size of the packages being installed.

Point to the button on the top. The progress is also indicated by the button on the top.
You can access other applications while installation is being done.

Point to the small tick mark button.

Once VLC is installed, there is a small tick mark against VLC.

The Remove button is displayed on the right side.


Point to the Remove button.

Do not click on it.

If you want to uninstall VLC, simply click the Remove button.
Similarly, you can search for and install all other software packages.
Now, let’s view the History.

This allows us to view all the changes we have made including installations, updates and removal of software.

Click History. The History dialog box appears. Click History. The History dialog box appears.
You can check your history by All Changes, Installations, Updates, and Removals.
Click All Changes. Click All Changes.
Point to the list of that appears. The list of all the changes made, that is, installations, updates and removals are displayed.
You can also update the installed software on a regular basis.
Open a fresh browser.

Type: http://www.ubuntu.com/ Press Enter. On the Ubuntu website click the Ubuntu link>> click Features. In the Features page >> click Ubuntu Software Centre link on the top right.

Point to the Launcher, click Dash Home. Alternately, from the Launcher, click Dash Home.
Point to the Search field, next to Dash Home, and type Ubuntu Software. In the Search field, type Ubuntu Software.
Point to the icon and click on it.

Click on the icon.

The Ubuntu Software Centre icon is displayed in the Search window.

Click on the icon.

The Ubuntu Software Centre window appears.
Click on VLC.

Point to the More Info icon.

Click on VLC.

Can you see the More Info icon beneath it?

Click on More Info. Click on More Info.
Point to the information that is displayed. More information about VLC is displayed.

Point to the Add-ons.

Screen shots and add-ons available for VLC are listed.

We shall not change these options for VLC.

Point to the version number. The version number, total size and updates are also displayed.
Point to the reviews. Reviews for VLC are also listed.
From the Main menu >> click Edit >> select Software Sources. From the Main menu, click Edit and select Software Sources.
Point to the Software Sources dialog box appears. The Software Sources dialog box appears.
Click the Updates tab. Click the Updates tab.
In the Automatically check for updates field, click on the drop-down box and click Weekly.
The Authentication dialog box appears. The Authentication dialog box appears.
Enter your system password.

Click Authenticate.

Enter your system password.

Click Authenticate.

The Authenticate dialog box appears only the first time you make a change.
In the Notify me of a new Ubuntu version field >> click on the drop-down box >> select For long-term support versions. Now, in the Notify me of a new Ubuntu version field, click on the drop-down box and select For long term support versions.
Click Close. Click Close.
