01:02 Newsletters are publications which get circulated regularly to its subscribers
01:09 It is used to communicate latest news, new ideas and events
01:15 Newsletters usually have multi-column format
01:20 This makes it easier for the reader to look at different sections
01:26 A Newsletter can be created very easily using LibreOffice Writer.
01:31 This makes reading of articles easier and faster.
01:36 Open the file Newsletter.odt
01:40 The same is available in the Code files link for practice.
01:45 We will now learn how to insert columns in our document.
01:50 In the Sidebar deck click on the Page icon.
01:55 Click on the Styles gear icon to open the Page Style dialog box.
02:01 Click on the Columns tab.
02:04 Under Settings, select the 2 columns with equal size icon.
02:09 Under Width and Spacing, Autowidth gets checked and Spacing is 0.5cm.
02:17 Click on the Apply button and then on the OK button.
02:22 Close the Sidebar deck.
02:25 Observe that our document changes into 2 columns format.
02:31 Alternatively we can add columns by clicking on the Format menu.

And then on the Columns option.

02:42 Now let us insert an image into our newsletter.
02:47 Place the cursor at the end of column 2 and press Enter thrice.
02:53 Click on the Gallery icon in the Sidebar.
02:58 Below the button New theme, we can see various theme folders.
03:03 I will select the Computers folder.
03:07 Then select Computer-Laptop-Black from the list.

Right-click and select the Insert option.

03:15 Alternatively we can also drag-and-drop the image.
03:20 Close the Sidebar deck.
03:23 The inserted image fits the width of column 2 into which it was inserted.
03:29 Resize the image as shown.
03:33 So this is how we can add an image to the newsletter column.
03:38 Next, we will learn about the Column break option.
03:42 I will keep the cursor at the beginning of the fourth paragraph.
03:47 Now click on the Insert menu in the menu bar and then on More Breaks.

From the sub-menu select Manual Break.

03:57 Insert break dialog box opens up.
04:00 Under the section Type, select the Column break option and click on the OK button.
04:08 We can see that the paragraph shifted to the second column of the page.
04:13 Repeat the above steps for the last paragraph also.
04:22 We see that the paragraph is now in page 2 of the newsletter.
04:27 Next we will learn how to highlight a portion of the article in a different colour.
04:33 Select the paragraph on page 2 by dragging the cursor along the text.
04:38 In the Formatting toolbar, click on the Highlight color icon drop-down.
04:44 From the Color palette box, select any color of your choice.

I will select Light Lime 3.

04:52 Click anywhere else to deselect the text.
04:56 Observe that the background color of that text portion has changed as per our selection.
05:03 Next we will learn how to add Banners to the newsletter.
05:08 Scroll up and place the cursor at the end of column 2 on page 1.
05:15 Now, locate the Stars and Banners icon in the Drawing toolbar.

Click on the down arrow to expand the options.

05:24 We see different shapes to choose from.

Let us select Horizontal scroll.

05:32 Come to column 2.
05:34 Hold the left mouse button and drag the shape in the empty space of column 2.

Click anywhere else to deselect the shape.

05:44 Now let’s move the newly added banner to the beginning of the document.
05:50 First go to page 1 and place the cursor before the word FOSS in column 1.
05:57 Now press Enter key four times.
06:02 Repeat the process for column 2 also.
06:06 Come back to the banner and click on it to select it.
06:11 Now drag and place it in the empty space in between columns 1 and 2.
06:19 Inside the banner we can type any text of our choice.
06:24 Double-click inside the banner and type, “This is a newsletter.”
06:30 Now press Ctrl+A keys to select the full text.
06:35 Centre-align it, increase the font size to 16, make the text bold.
06:45 Now click anywhere else to deselect the banner.
06:50 We can even add effects to our newsletter.
06:54 I will demonstrate how to do so.
06:58 Select the heading FOSS.
07:01 Now go to the Format menu and select Character.
07:06 Character dialog box opens up

Click on the Font Effects tab.

07:11 Under the Relief or Effects section, check the Blinking option.

And click on the OK button.

07:19 We can see that the word FOSS is blinking.
07:23 This effect is useful to draw the attention of the reader of the digital newsletter.
07:30 Now let’s learn how to add a watermark.
07:34 Watermark is used to indicate that the document is to be treated in a special way.
07:40 For example- Confidential, Private, etc.
07:45 Let me demonstrate how to add a watermark.
07:49 Go to the Format menu in the menu bar and select the Watermark option.
07:55 Watermark dialog box opens up.
07:58 In the Text field, type “For internal circulation”.
08:04 Increase the transparency to 70 % and change the color to Light Red 3.

Then click on the OK button.

08:17 We can see our Watermark is added to the newsletter.
08:22 Lastly, we will learn about the Word count feature in Writer.
08:27 Word count feature helps to maintain word count in a document.
08:32 It helps us to know the number of words in the document which we typed.
08:38 It also counts pages, paragraphs, lines, and characters.
08:45 Select the last paragraph which we had highlighted earlier.
08:50 Observe the word count that is displayed in the Status bar.
08:55 Click on Word and Character count in the Status bar.
09:00 The Word Count dialog box opens up.
09:03 It shows the word count for the current selection.

And also for the whole document as well.

09:11 It also shows the total count of Characters including spaces and excluding spaces.
09:18 Close the Word Count dialog box by clicking on the Close button.
09:22 Save all the changes and close the file.
09:25 This brings us to the end of this tutorial.
